1. Tell me about yourself.
How to Prep
This friendly, introductory question will help your interviewer get a better idea of your personality, how you might fit into their team, and whether their working environment would be a good fit for you. Home Depot advertises on their careers pages, "What's the best place we've ever built? The place where we work. Here, you can be yourself and also be part of something much bigger." Before presenting your best first impression, you'll want to get a fair idea of what their work environment and work culture look like. Arriving prepared is not only respectful but shows you have a strong work ethic and are invested in this opportunity.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 24th, 2023
How to Answer
In an interview, you shouldn't just tell your interviewer what you think they want to hear. You don't know them, so it is impossible to know what they want to hear other than the truth. Every interviewer wants to know who you are, why you are here, where you've come from in your career, and where you are going. If you answer those questions with sincerity and genuinely want to work for them, it will show. So when presenting your elevator pitch, try to answer their question as succinctly as possible and stick to those points. Also, actions speak louder than words. If your answers reveal the work you put in to prepare for your interview, you'll be offering evidence of the truth of your words.

Experienced Example
"I've worked several jobs in retail and the office sector. But I find that the work environment I enjoy working in most has a lot of social interaction and the opportunity to work with my hands and exercise my mind. There is nothing better than getting a workout while you are at work. I got tired of working in a cubicle and decided to return to retail. Lastly, I am a DIY fanatic and a go-to resource for just about every home improvement project you can imagine, and Home Depot naturally feels like the perfect fit for me."

2. Name your three best qualities.
How to Prep
Home Depot has a career advice website for their associates called 'My Orange Ladder,' where you can find valuable insights into their work culture that could benefit your interview. For example, they advise you to "identify your values and strengths so you can intentionally craft your personal brand." Additionally, visit their career website to find keywords such as 'learn, grow, and succeed,' which would be worthwhile to incorporate into your answers to exhibit like-mindedness to your interviewer, who is looking for those candidates who feel like the right fit. Their website describes their ideal candidate as an individual who takes their projects seriously and exhibits "serious know-how and a warm smile. If you love learning and the satisfaction of helping others, you can build a rewarding career at The Home Depot."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Knowing what they are looking for will help you determine how to present yourself to your interviewer. So spend time thinking about the qualities people have repeatedly commended you for. They even offer this advice on their website, 'My Orange Ladder,' where they say, "While it may be uncomfortable to learn how people truly see you, understanding how you are perceived can be the first step in empowering yourself to create the type of brand that will get you where you want to go." Recall all the positive praise you've received, and tie it into those qualities you feel would benefit Home Depot.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 24th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I don't just try to improve upon those things where I have room to grow; I also work to improve upon my greatest strengths. The more I learn, the more I develop and grow. So, even though I believe that my three top qualities are my attention to detail, intuitiveness, and ability to strike up meaningful conversations with people of all ranges, I am getting better at these skills each day. These skills help me when working in a retail environment because I can quickly build rapport and then make solid product recommendations."

3. What is your availability?
How to Prep
On their careers page, they advertise, "At The Home Depot, we know that our associates make the difference. Working day or night, we treat them with care and respect." Before your interview, try to get as clear of an idea as possible of the job requirements and expectations. Most of their job descriptions detail whether the position is full-time or part-time. However, many positions may not state whether they have a consistent schedule or consistent days off. Based on their recruiting efforts, it sounds like they'll treat you 'with care and respect.' If you can't find any information online, go into the store and ask one of their associates.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Before agreeing to work evenings and weekends, be sure that you can commit to doing so. If this would require major lifestyle changes for you or increase your likelihood of burning out on the job more quickly, you won't be doing anyone any favors. Agreeing to work any shifts just to win the job is misguided. Besides, if they are considering hiring you anyway, they might be able to work with you on your scheduling preferences. Just go in with clear expectations while being honest about whether this opportunity is right for you.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"I am available to work any evening and all weekends. I am a second-year University student, and my courses this semester are primarily in the mornings and early afternoons."

4. Describe a time you disagreed with changes within the company at your last job.
How to Prep
This question aims to determine whether working in a corporate environment is the right fit for you. How you answer will help your interviewer determine if you're the type of candidate who will go the extra mile to support your teams and embody the company culture, even during times of change or transition. When considering how to answer this question, check out the attitude Ted Decker, Home Depot's CEO, suggests as an approach, "The only thing constant in life is change. Don't just get used to it, embrace it because you will grow so much in periods of adversity."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 24th, 2023
How to Answer
During times of change within a company, there will always be those who confuse the messaging coming down from the top as a sign of job insecurity. Although this may sometimes ring true, it is not always the case. Regardless, your interviewer needs to ensure you wouldn't be a source of dissent among their teams. The last thing they want to do is hurt their reputation by hiring someone they might regret bringing on board. So try to reflect the right attitude, being optimistic and supportive of your leadership and the direction the company takes. Show that you ask questions, taking efforts to get a clearer idea of the big picture, and that you share that vision whenever you can.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 24th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I aim to understand the big picture goals regarding changes implemented at work. I don't have to like them; I just need to support them. There is probably a good reason those changes were implemented, and that's okay. So long as nobody is hurt or dishonest, I'll do whatever I can to support the company's direction and make sure everything keeps running smoothly. Just give me the tools to do my job, and I'll perform to the best of my ability."

5. Do you prefer working in a team environment or alone?
How to Prep
On Home Depot's career advice website, My Orange Ladder, they offer a couple of tips. "Tip 1: Look for opportunities to build your skills. As you explore what you would like to do next, think less about what specific position or job title you would like and more about what is best for you to build your skills and achieve your goals. Tip 2: Take advantage of the opportunities presented to you. While some careers are easily defined as vertical moves in a field, many are not. Building a career often depends on your skills and the Company's needs at the time. Many times, it's just about exploring different options and being in the right place at the right time."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
This behavioral question aims to identify whether you are more of an introvert, ambivert, or extrovert and what type of work you find most motivating. However, rarely are people one extreme or the other. Most people fall in the range of being an ambivert, adaptable to working in more social environments or on more solitary analytical tasks. There are a wide variety of career opportunities at Home Depot, from in-store customer service jobs to remote job opportunities, from cybersecurity to product management. So, you not only want to ensure the position you are pursuing feels like the right fit for you, but you want to effectively communicate to your interviewer you've put thought into this and feel like you and this position are a good match.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"If I had to choose one over the other, I prefer being part of a team. This is why this position seemed like such a good fit for me. Now that's not to say I can't be entrusted with a solitary task that will contribute to and help the team effort. I am adaptable."

6. How well would you say you know our departments and what we sell?
How to Prep
Don't limit yourself to sharing your experiences with Home Depot as a customer. If hired, they'll expect you to be a knowledgeable resource on all their products and services. To gain a competitive edge, start your onboarding now. The easier you make their jobs, the more likely you'll be hired. So familiarize yourself with everything Home Depot. Don't limit your product knowledge to what they have in just one store. There may be products and services which they only offer online as well.

What You Need to Know
"Shelves stocked. Aisles organized. Everything in its right place. Associates keep our stores ready so customers can find what they need." In addition to tool and truck rentals, they list the following on their website: appliances, bath and faucets, blinds and window treatment, building materials, cleaning, decor and furniture, doors and windows, electrical, flooring and rugs, hardware, heating, cooling and air quality, holiday decorations, kitchen and kitchenware, lawn and garden, lighting and ceiling fans, outdoor living and patio, paint, plumbing, smart home, Storage and organization, and of course tools. Share that you'd look forward to learning more.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Well, on top of renovating my house and shopping in just about every aisle of the store, I spent some time browsing your website, familiarizing myself with the products not available in the store. I also arrived an hour early before this interview to walk the store at length. I am probably more familiar with the store than the average non-employee. My favorite section is the gardening section and the paint department. I love your affordable prices and the fact that you have great quality offerings."

Career Goals
7. Why do you want to work at Home Depot?
How to Prep
How you answer this question will help your interviewer determine whether you are trying to land a job anywhere and are playing the numbers game or if you have identified what Home Depot uniquely has to offer. Share what drew you to apply for this job in the first place, whether it is being surrounded by tools, liking the smell of lumber, or helping others with their DIY projects. Many positions in their company are described as "a lifelong career or starting point to move throughout the company. Whether you are looking for the next step or you just want to try something new, there are multiple ways to grow." Before trying to convince your interviewer they should hire you over another candidate, you should be convinced yourself.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"I am most happy when working with my hands. I also love DIY, construction projects, and being creative in my own home. Helping others make their vision a reality is a stimulating thought for me. The products at Home Depot are ones that I am passionate about and will have no problem promoting to your loyal customers."

8. Where do you see yourself within the Home Depot organization in two years?
How to Prep
An interviewer is looking for someone who is committed for the next year or two. Whether you're a candidate looking to grow within the company or a college student looking for a part-time job and don't see an in-store retail position as a long-term career move, it's important to share your reasons for pursuing this opportunity with transparency. "Our whole business is based on improvement, whether it's helping a customer renovate a space or challenging our own people to be their best. No matter where people are in their careers, they have room to move up and explore new opportunities with us."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Ideally, your interviewer wants to hire those with employee retention in mind. But, if you embody their culture and values, have a strong work ethic, are honest, and exhibit integrity, you could end up at the front of the pack. So, describe your passion for this opportunity and what you like about the company. Discuss your career plans and goals and whether those fit with what Home Depot has to offer. The goal is to set clear and realistic expectations, with an openness to exploring other options in the future.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"My two-year plan is to join your organization and earn my way into a floor manager position. I have a great deal of experience with team management, customer dispute, and inventory. I believe you will see me well-suited for a management role in a short amount of time."

9. How do you expect to make a difference at Home Depot?
How to Prep
When an interviewer asks how you plan on making a difference, they're not expecting you to come in and reinvent the wheel. They'll leave that to their executives. Besides, when building relationships with those who consider themselves stakeholders, those who've contributed and helped strengthen the systems and processes, the last thing you want to do is come in expecting to tear it all down and assume you can build something better than what they've taken pride in building together. Instead, take a close look at one of Home Depot's core values, Entrepreneurial Spirit: "Home Depot associates are encouraged to initiate creative and innovative ways to serve our customers and improve the business as well as spread best practices throughout the company." They focus on embracing their values while better serving their customers and enhancing their best practices. So when answering this question, focus on your contribution through collaboration.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I expect to make a difference at Home Depot by bringing positive energy to the store every day. I would actively listen and learn as much as I can in the shortest time possible. I would apply everything I learn to add kaizen anywhere I can. I will also ensure that my product knowledge in my department is top-notch so that the customers are always confident in my abilities as a trusted resource."

10. Do you shop at Home Depot?
How to Prep
No customer would remain loyal to a brand if the ambassador of that brand were not themselves a customer. So, when recruiting a new employee, an interviewer will constantly question how effectively each candidate would represent their brand. So whether you are a frequent shopper at Home Depot or only on occasion, you want to showcase your brand loyalty and share what keeps you coming back. Also, take the advice Home Depot offers on their career advice website, My Orange Ladder, "Arrive Early! Rushing and feeling frantic will carry over into your interview. Get there early, walk around, and be calm when it's time to meet the interviewers." Good advice. Get there early enough to explore and familiarize yourself with the store while looking at everything through the eyes of the customer.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Yes, I shop at Home Depot! I come here frequently for my DIY needs, as I am currently finishing my basement. I have also rented tools from Home Depot. I have always had a great experience which is part of the reason why I am so thrilled to be here interviewing with you today."

11. How are you better suited for this job than the other applicants?
How to Prep
How you answer this question will inform your interviewer how well you've prepared for your interview and whether you've identified what they are looking for in a candidate. Your skills and experience are listed on your resume and cover letter. So when answering this question, share something about yourself they don't already know. Whether it is something unique about you, like having family or friends who work for the company, feeling like you are already one of them, or showcasing the homework you did on the company, view this question as an opportunity to set yourself apart. Bragging about yourself can be challenging, but you must show the interviewer that you are the best person for the job. And above all else, show them you already embrace their core values. "Our core values are not just something we post in our lobby. They define who we are and how we operate. Our associates, who live by them each day, are what set us apart as a truly special place to work."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Well, I'd say that I am better suited than the other candidates because I am an entrepreneurial spirit who enjoys giving back. I provide excellent customer service and enjoy building strong relationships with my customers and teammates. I respect all people, take care of the people I work with, and always strive to do the right thing. I also consider myself a stakeholder in the work that needs to be done and always take ownership of my commitments and growth opportunities. So, I'd say I am better suited for this job than anyone else because Home Depot's values and my values are the same."

Competency
12. Tell me about your latest DIY project.
How to Prep
This question offers you an opportunity to showcase the quality of your work. When it comes to projects, Home Depot advertises they are looking for those who "own projects from start to finish." Think about a recent DIY project you have done, and showcase how you followed it through to completion, speaking with pride about your results. If appropriate, share pictures of the before and after if you have them on your phone. This can be anything from remodeling your home to installing new light plate covers or painting your apartment.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"I recently decided to take on refinishing of my hardwood floors. The Home Depot location closest to me was offering a free workshop on how to strip wood flooring, so I took that. That class gave me the confidence that I needed. They turned out so well!"
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Competency
13. Who are our customers?
How to Prep
This is another question aimed at determining how thoroughly you prepared for this interview. On Home Depot's website, they describe their customers as Pros, DIYers, and Do-It-For-Me customers. "Putting our pro, DIY, and do-it-for-me customers first."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"Home Depot's customers range from trade professionals, whether they be contractors, apartment property maintenance workers, landscapers, or handymen. There are also do-it-yourself-ers who love their home projects, and then there are the do-it-for-me folks who want to perhaps buy a new oven, but don't want to install it themselves. Anyone who has a home is a potential Home Depot customer."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Conflict
14. Tell me about a time you had to work with someone you didn't get along with.
How to Prep
This question is aimed at determining how effective your interpersonal skills are and whether you can rise above any personal differences you have with those you work with while prioritizing the goals of the team. How you answer will indicate whether you embrace their values, particularly Home Depot's core values of Respect For All People. "We treat people like we want to be treated. Everyone, from our team members to our customers, is a valuable part of who we are."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Offer an example of a time you worked with someone you didn't see eye to eye with yet successfully collaborated with. Offers details on how you effectively communicated with this person, treating each other with mutual respect. Share the stakes involved and how you delivered on your goals within your timelines, prioritizing the goals of the team above all else. Avoid speaking poorly about the individual and focus only on the positives.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I was paired on a project with a person whose heart just wasn't into the job, and they often didn't show up to work on time. Even though his performance wasn't consistent, I had no issue with them. They just generated more work for me. When we worked together, I explained that I needed them to live up to their commitments and gave them a heads-up that they were skating on thin ice. He apologized for creating more work for me and thanked me for the heads-up that management had their eyes on him, but the situation did not improve. Eventually, he was terminated. No hard feelings. I just hope that he eventually found a job that felt like a good fit for him."

Customer Service
15. How well do you handle customer complaints?
How to Prep
Home Depot emphasizes that they are always putting their customers first. So this question aims to assess how effectively you can put your customers first, even under the most challenging circumstances. How you answer will reveal your level of emotional intelligence and whether you can objectify the situation rather than internalize your customer's frustration. As Home Depot's CEO, Ted Decker, puts it, "Life is an endurance sport, and you're going to have professional and personal adversity, and being resilient is just a huge piece of, ultimately, being happy."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I handle customer complaints very well and usually quite quickly. I understand that every upset customer wants to know they are being listened to, and I do that very well. I have a lot of empathy, and my listening and communication skills are strong. I do my best to resolve their concerns in a way that benefits the customer and my employer."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Customer Service
16. Tell me about a time you went the extra mile for a customer.
How to Prep
By learning how you would define going the extra mile, your interviewer might be able to assess in contrast what your work standard looks like. So, think of an example that shows that going the extra mile is your consistent status quo. Doing so will align you with Home Depot's values and the kind of customer service they pride their associates on. For example, they even state on their website, "Our helpful and approachable associates consistently go the extra mile for our customers. That's how we live up to our commitment to provide excellent customer service every time our customers enter our stores. We offer the right products, the right selection, the right prices, and the know-how to complete any project, big or small. Our team of passionate associates builds lasting relationships by helping customers realize their dreams and by growing their trust through their skills and expertise."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I try to be helpful and approachable and always keep an eye out to do right by my customer whenever I can. If I recognize an opportunity, I take it. If I see a customer picking out something on the shelf, I'll strike up a conversation and ask what they're working on. If there is a better way to do their project, I'll share it and walk them through it step by step. The more you do that, the more your customers will trust that you are always trying to do the right thing by them."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Customer Service
17. How do you define excellent customer service?
How to Prep
To effectively answer this question, determine how Home Depot defines excellent customer service. All you have to do is familiarize yourself with their core values, one of which is "EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE - We serve our customers in many ways, from helping them find a tool or just by saying hello. We strive to create a friendly place where customers feel they can take on any project."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
While researching Home Depot and familiarizing yourself with their culture, constantly compare your approach to theirs. Ask yourself how you are aligned. Doing so will help you answer such questions effectively and in a manner that will appeal to your interviewer and set you apart from the other candidates.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Customer Service means everything from helping them find a tool to just saying hello! I define good customer service by asking myself, Do my customers feel listened to? Did they find choices related to their needs? And was I able to give them the product knowledge they needed to make an informed decision? Home Depot is known for delivering exceptional customer experience, and I plan to compliment this in every way, should I be hired."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Diligence
18. What would you do if you saw someone doing something unsafe at work?
How to Prep
Typically, a company's safety policies are detailed in their code of conduct. In theirs, Home Depot outlines, "We are committed to providing our associates and customers a safe working and shopping environment. As an associate, you are expected to comply with all safety requirements. If you are concerned about safety or have questions, comments, or feedback regarding regulatory requirements, notify your supervisor immediately. The Home Depot should never ask or expect an associate to perform any task that is considered unsafe."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Your interviewer is curious whether you would prove to be an asset or a liability in a situation like this. The last thing they want is to hire someone who creates or contributes to an unsafe work environment resulting in worker's compensation claims or an OSHA complaint or violation (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). So familiarize yourself with Home Depot's safety rules and regulations, and offer any instances where you enhanced the safety practices on the job.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I would call them out on it. I would lecture them about how their unsafe act could negatively impact everyone on the team. I would then make them promise they wouldn't repeat their mistake, and I would document it and pass that on to my higher-ups."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Diligence
19. If you found a twenty-dollar bill in the parking lot, what would you do?
How to Prep
This question will help your interviewer assess your sense of integrity while evaluating the sincerity of your answer. It will also help them determine how familiar you are with Home Depot's values, such as "DOING THE RIGHT THING - We always strive to do the right thing no matter what. For a company of our size and footprint, every decision matters."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I could never keep money that was not mine. Perhaps the person who dropped the money may desperately need that $20 today, and turning it in would give them a better chance of recovering the money. For someone elderly who is living on a modest pension, that $20 is a lot of money."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Diligence
20. What would you do if a coworker asked you to help them steal?
How to Prep
Most companies post their code of ethics and code of conduct online. This can usually be found online as a pdf, but it is not always in an obvious location on their website. Materials such as these, or their employee handbooks, can give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse of their policies and what it is like to work there. For example, Home Depot says in their Business Code Of Conduct and Ethics, "If you are faced with a situation where you think our Company values or compliance with the law may be in question, you should bring this to the attention of your immediate manager or supervisor, your Human Resource partner, Corporate Compliance, or, if you prefer, you may anonymously report your concern. Working together, we will maintain our values and ensure the success of The Home Depot."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Home Depot advertises that they are looking for honest candidates who conduct themselves with integrity. Explain how you acted according to their recommended approach in such a situation. If you have never been in such a situation, share how, in your own words, you would approach such a situation in accordance with their values.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Stealing is wrong, no matter which way you slice it. I have zero tolerance for unethical behavior and would report the situation immediately through the appropriate channels."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Discovery
21. What is a must-have tool for any home improvement project?
How to Prep
This question can be approached in a variety of ways, but your aim should be to provide them with insights into your personality or work ethic while making yourself a more memorable candidate. Whether you view your favorite power tool as a must-have for any project or communication as the most critical tool in a group project, think outside the box and consider what you want your answer to say about you as a potential employee.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"If I had to choose one tool, it would have to be versatile. So, I would say a cordless drill is essential. There are so many attachments available which make this tool very multi-purpose."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Diversity
22. How much experience do you have working in a diverse and inclusive environment?
How to Prep
Spend time familiarizing yourself with the many statements Home Depot published on its website concerning diversity, equality, and inclusion. "We strive to create a place where everyone feels at home. Here, our associates are respected for who they are and for what they can do. Our company is stronger when we challenge each other to look at situations in new ways and when we can support every customer who walks through our doors and make them feel welcome, too. We know we are a stronger company when we have associates from different backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives that can help lead us into the future. Whether we are engaging our associates, customers, suppliers, or community partners, we are committed to a diverse and inclusive work environment."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Any retail environment likely serves customers who come from a wide variety of backgrounds, demographics, and walks of life. Most companies hire employees who accurately reflect the customers and communities they serve and foster innovation and collaboration. So, your interviewer aims to assess your cultural competence and whether you would feel right at home in an environment like theirs.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I don't have any experience working in an environment that lacks diversity, and that's by intention. The more diverse and inclusive my teams are, the more at home I feel."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
EQ
23. What are some of your weaknesses?
How to Prep
Don't be shy in sharing weaknesses that are not critical for the job. Taking ownership of your weaknesses suggests you view them as growth opportunities and actively take responsibility for your development as a professional. By openly sharing some self-perceived weaknesses and the strides you've already made in overcoming them, you'll present yourself as proactive and self-aware. As Home Depot advises on their site, My Orange Ladder, "Make an effort to change the behaviors getting in the way of your success."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"I would say that I am a sponge when it comes to learning new skills. I am very competitive with myself and can be a bit hard on myself when I don't meet my expectations. I sometimes hold myself to too high of a standard. I am always trying to overachieve."

24. How strong is your knowledge of power tools?
How to Prep
By testing your product knowledge, your interviewer hopes to assess how capably you'd be able to serve their customers. So before your interview, familiarize yourself with Home Depot's product lines and offerings. Don't limit yourself to the power tools alone, but familiarize yourself with all of their products, from wheel barrels to nail guns to grinders to stereo speaker cords. However, considering that their offerings are extensive, assure your interviewer that if a customer ever asked you about a product that you weren't sure they carried, you would be resourceful in finding the answers your customer was looking for swiftly.

Answer Example
"I would rate my power tool knowledge as intermediate level. I have used my tools for various projects around the home but have fewer than I'd like. I don't own as many tools as I like and spend a lot of time drooling over Home Depot's selection. I have a lot of interest in having more hands-on experience."

Experience
25. Tell me about your experience working in retail.
How to Prep
Your interviewer is offering you an opportunity to bring your resume to life. Whether you have prior experience in retail matters less than how your experience and professional development would translate to this role. On Home Depot's career advice website, My Orange Ladder, they suggest that during your interview, you should "focus on accomplishments, not responsibilities. Everyone has a personal brand, but most people are not aware of this and do not manage it deliberately and effectively. You should take control of your brand and change how others perceive you. This will help you to actively grow and distinguish yourself as an exceptional associate."

Entry Level Example
"I have not worked in retail, as this role with Home Depot would be my first official job; however, I have experience working in a team environment as Captain of my college football team for the past two years. I know a lot about collaboration and dedication, and am no stranger to working hard and getting a good workout while I am at it."

Leadership
26. Tell me about a time you led a team.
How to Prep
Your interviewer is curious whether you have leadership potential. How you answer will potentially inform them of your leadership style. If you don't have formal leadership experience, share an occasion where you took charge, set the pace, or led by example. As Home Depot's CEO, Ted Decker, once said, "The only thing I can control is how hard I work. Whatever you do, whether it's being a doctor, building bridges, or working at a home improvement store, no path doesn't require hard work."

Experienced Example
"Our company had a sales contest last month, and I was asked to be our team leader for the challenge. I enjoyed that responsibility, and we ended up winning the reward in the end because my team increased sales by the highest percentage. I believe the biggest factor in our success was the enthusiasm I brought to the team. Everyone was engaged, and wanted to win."

Leadership
27. Do you see yourself as a leader? When have you led a team?
How to Prep
A large percentage of the leadership of Home Depot worked their way up within the company, and they advertise on their careers pages the opportunities that await. "Our stores are a key part of keeping our company strong, and leadership is an important part of keeping these environments great. Discover what's next. Your next opportunity may be closer than you think." Whether you are interested in pursuing a leadership position in their company or not, you'll want to convey that you take charge of your development and are self-managed in your work. Share how you support the others on your team, occasionally coaching others to ensure they succeed. Everything you do to help the team succeed is a success you can share in.

Experienced Example
"In my current position, I am the president of the social committee. I love that I have the opportunity to encourage employee engagement while being a positive influence on the workplace culture. I am a natural leader because I start by leading by example. As a leader, I make myself available to others who need a mentor, assistance in adjusting to their role, or just a listening ear when they've had a tough day. I am confident in my leadership abilities and look forward to joining your team in a leadership role."

Problem Solving
28. Tell me about an occasion when you didn’t have adequate time to complete all your assigned tasks.
How to Prep
Approach every interview question as an opportunity. The question doesn't specifically ask about a time you exhibited poor time management skills. It asks about a time you were challenged with an impossible deadline. Avoid offering examples where you took on too many responsibilities, didn't meet your deadlines, didn't communicate when you needed help, or let down the team. Instead, show how resourceful you are, how you prioritized your goals, and how you took ownership of your commitments and responsibilities. Align your approach to such situations with Home Depot's recommended approach. Home Depot's website, My Orange Ladder, offers advice for such a situation. "Is your goal too big? If yes, break it down into smaller goals with appropriate milestones and deadlines."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"I am always diligent when it comes to deadlines. However, I once had an abnormally large order from a regular client. I was a little stressed about making sure it was perfect, so I put in four overtime hours to meet the expectation. It felt great to deliver high-quality service."

Problem Solving
29. When faced with a problem, how do you decide on the best solution?
How to Prep
Home Depot advertises that they are looking for candidates who "apply what they know, pick up new skills, and collaborate with people to make their projects come to life." Therefore, your interviewer is curious about how resourceful you are and if your general approach to problem-solving and taking calculated risks aligns with theirs. In a fast-paced retail environment, one often has to think and act fast. As George Patton said, "A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow." So when answering this question, you want to communicate that you perform well under pressure, as opposed to freezing up and suffering from task paralysis.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"If I have a problem with multiple solutions, I always go back to the classic pros vs. cons method. I fully understand that although no solution is perfect, some solutions offer lesser sacrifice while others pose potential loss. I have been trained to take the solution that is 'closest to the money,' which means that if I am stuck between a rock and a hard place, I will choose the solution that is most beneficial to the company's bottom line."

Salary
30. What are your salary expectations?
How to Prep
The key to answering this question is knowing what they can afford at the forefront, and with most job postings at Home Depot, they advertise the pay range. They also offer a generous benefits package. Anything that equates to lowering your cost of living can count as pay. "Taking care of our associates and their families is core to who we are. From health and wellness benefits to legal help and tuition reimbursement, we have a variety of benefits to make your life easier. See how our benefits could work for you. Starting pay may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, position offered and location." So, read up on Home Depot's salary range and the benefits they offer before attempting to answer this question.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Negotiating pay can often be difficult to navigate. More often than not, it equates to how well you can convey your professional worth. There are many ways one can substantiate their professional worth. Some do so by showcasing what they have to offer, others what they currently earn or their projected earnings, and others what their current employer offered to stay onboard. However, if you don't feel comfortable disclosing your prior salary history, you might not have to. Many states have a salary history ban, prohibiting interviewers from asking you how much you currently make. Some of those states are Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, DC, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Pennsylvania (state agencies only), Vermont, Virginia, and Washington.
How well you perform in your interview also plays a role in establishing your professional worth. But the aim is to keep negotiations open and to ask questions, such as how often they have performance reviews and how often top performers are awarded a pay increase. You can also ask if there is a pay rate cap for the position you are applying for and what percentage, on average, is allowed according to their budget.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"Currently, I earn a base salary of $45,000 per year, and I would like to earn slightly higher in my next position, as I have additional certifications since my last salary negotiation took place."

Stress
31. How do you handle stress on the job?
How to Prep
Most companies offer mental health services to support a positive work-life balance. Home Depot is no different, offering their employees "additional resources for a healthy lifestyle" such as "24/7 virtual doctor care can help to improve (or maintain) your physical and mental wellbeing, discounts on fitness equipment, programs, and gym memberships and more." But your interviewer needs to know that you put an effort towards this aim as well. So showcase your emotional intelligence and how you manage your stress even during the most stressful times.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
How to Answer
Most retail environments can be fast-paced, high-pressure environments, especially when they are front-line workers or occasionally understaffed. Every employer has a concerted interest in maintaining their employees' job satisfaction and staving off burnout syndrome to ensure employee retention. Therefore, your interviewer is curious about how effectively you manage stress and maintain a healthy work-life balance.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"I am quite resilient to stress. I believe this is because of my eight-plus years of experience in a management role in a fast-paced environment. Under extreme stress, I make sure to give myself a breather, whether that be a quick walk around the block or a couple of minutes on the phone with my wife, who is great at bringing me back down to earth."

Teamwork
32. How do you go about building relationships in a new workplace?
How to Prep
Your interviewer is curious about how effectively you would build relationships with your fellow associates and regular customers when onboarding. If they choose to hire you, it will be up to you to earn the respect and trust of those who are already there, taking pride in what they've helped build. One of Home Depot's values is "BUILDING STRONG RELATIONSHIPS - We build strong relationships based on trust and honesty. We listen and respond to the needs of our people, partners, and customers, and we act with integrity." So share your approach to building new and lasting relationships, and assure your interviewer you would be a valuable addition to their teams.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Well, this interview is just a warm-up, isn't it? So as soon as I end up getting hired somewhere, that interview starts all over with every other member of the team. I need to earn their trust and show an active interest in who they are and the role they play while learning as much as I can about the job from them. I need to perform as well as I claim I will and prove I am everything I say I am. That takes honesty, transparency, and integrity. Only then can I earn their trust and build the lasting relationships I look forward to in my new employ."

Teamwork
33. Tell me about the most rewarding experience you've had working in a team environment. What made it so rewarding?
How to Prep
Your interviewer is curious about what kind of team environment you'd thrive in and whether you would find what they offer rewarding. How you answer could also inform them of how team-oriented you are. One of their values is "TAKING CARE OF OUR PEOPLE - We take care of each other. It's that simple. We're here for you through it all, just like we're here for our customers." Discuss the camaraderie the team shared, how everyone acted as a stakeholder in their mutual success, the positive outcome attained, and the part you played.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"Last Christmas, we were short-staffed and run off of our feet during the biggest shopping season of the year. The struggle, the overtime hours, and the excitement of huge sales numbers put our team on a type of high that I had not seen before. It was pure adrenaline and super exciting. This experience is by far the best team environment I have ever worked in. I loved the excitement and the way we all banded together to ensure the success of our store."

Teamwork
34. What does working in a team environment mean to you?
How to Prep
In most positions, Home Depot's working environment is a team environment. So your interviewer is curious about how team-oriented you are. Whether through building relationships, supporting the group effort, or taking ownership of the part you have to play and align what your values with theirs. "We live by our values. We think of them as instructions that guide our actions each day. Our values keep us all working toward the same goals, so we can build strong teams and deliver the service our customers count on from us."
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Experienced Example
"Camaraderie and the pride that comes with a job well done. When everyone understands how the role they played fits into the big picture. When every member of the team is doing high-fives and sharing in the success."

Tough
35. Why should we not hire you?
How to Prep
This interview question challenges your wit and ability to think outside the box. The trick to answering questions like this is offering a strength that can also be perceived as a weakness, such as some of your pet peeves that might benefit the business. For example, if you are extremely safety-oriented, you can warn your interviewer that you have annoyed your coworkers by always insisting they wear their bike helmets when riding to work or insisting everyone wear protected eyewear whenever necessary and that you do so because you care for the welfare of the team. However you choose to answer, you aim to offer something that is a positive trait you are committed to, regardless of its popularity.
Written by Kevin Downey on June 25th, 2023
Answer Example
"If you hate incurably optimistic morning people, you shouldn't hire me. I am the type of person who wakes up whistling a happy tune and rolls out of bed with a spring in my step. I worked with one person who was the grouchiest person in the morning that I've ever known, and they used to joke that if I started whistling before they'd had their coffee, they would murder me. At least, I hope they were joking, but after that warning, I laughed and never put it to the test. Sometimes, if I arrived to work before them, I would make their coffee for them. A sign of goodwill."
