According to HireVue's classification system, a novice is more likely to suffer from task paralysis and procrastination in times of stress and not react quickly enough in time-sensitive situations. They're afraid of making the wrong choice and look to others to make those tough choices for them. They can also be someone who takes unnecessary risks, compromising the company's assets. Whereas an expert is classified as someone who is resourceful and decisive and takes action with a broader understanding of what works and what doesn't, relying on their deeper understanding of the business and their professional experience, which inform their calculated risk-taking.
This question aims to gauge how well you cope with stress. Your aim is to convey that you keep calm under pressure. Consider the advice offered on WTW careers' site: "Stay in control. It's natural to be nervous in an interview. Remember that it's fine to pause before responding to questions to gather your thoughts if you're unsure about a question."
"I was recently about to start a meeting with a client's staff, and we were waiting for the CEO to arrive when I received word that they were unable to attend the meeting due to an unplanned contingency. So I pivoted and changed the subject of the meeting from an orientation to an engagement meeting. I gave a brief overview of my role there and started fielding questions. The more questions the employees asked of me and the more I answered with transparency, the more trust I was able to build. I was then able to take note of where the communication was breaking down in the company based on the questions that were asked. When the CEO arrived much later, I shared my findings with them, and offered several suggestions which led to greater innovation in our approach."
