The interviewer wants to know if you consider yourself to be an emotionally driven person. Talk to the interviewer about your emotions and if they have ever affected your productivity at work.
Keep in mind - almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, but there are other ways that you can describe yourself that have a more positive connotation. If you are passionate, you could choose to refer to yourself as:
- Expressive
- Communicative
- Open
- Unreserved
- Warm Hearted

"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree, and I would consider myself kind-hearted and open. A career in healthcare can be emotional at times; however, I choose to focus on the positives. For instance - if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way. "

Nursing is a field where oftentimes emotions are encountered. During times of heightened emotion, I employ empathy with my patients and their families. By understanding the thoughts and feelings of others it allows me to provide better care as a nurse. I think that it is okay to have those conversations and be moved by their experience but understand that their experience isn't mine. Having this separation allows me to be productive no matter the emotions that come my way.

Chad's Feedback
Good answer! The ability to separate your personal emotions from the experience, while remaining empathetic to patients and families, will serve you well in the healthcare services industry. If possible, share an example of a time in your career when you were able to separate your emotions from the situation in order to maintain productivity.

I consider myself to be a warm-hearted person. I am open to people's ideas, and I consider communication
one of the most important things on the job. When I find myself feeling stressed about something I stop and
take a deep breath and calm down then go on with my work.
Marcie's Feedback
It's great that you're a compassionate and open person who enjoys communicating! Just make sure to directly answer the question. In this case, let the interviewer know that you're able to handle a variety of emotions without them getting in the way of your job. Talk about how you can successfully handle stress, grief, etc., at work and explain how you do this.
Prepare for behavioral and healthcare-specific questions that UH interviewers emphasize.
