1. How do you define success?
How to Answer
Everyone defines success differently, and success can look different based on the company you work for and the role you play. Tell the interviewer how you view progress and success.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to tie your answer into the success you plan to bring to this particular position, should you be offered the role. For example, if you are interviewing for a project manager position, mention aspects of success such as clearly defined objectives, developing high-performance team dynamics, delivering on time, delivering on budget, and meeting the project's goals.

Entry Level Example
"As an entry-level employee, I am focused on success in two areas. First, I feel it is important for me to meet and exceed the goals I am given by my manager. I know it will take time, but I strive to achieve excellence in any role that I take on.
Secondly, I feel successful when I am able to add value to my team. I know I am successful when my teammates value my contributions and know they can rely on me to do my part."

Goals Achievement and Growth Example
"I define success by my ability to reach the goals set out for me and my ability to grow. On a personal level, success is represented by the things I wish to achieve in my life. On a work level, success is defined by the targets set for me and my ability to meet or exceed them. Professional success also includes my being able to develop and grow in whatever roles I take on.
I know from my research that BAE Systems plc is a goal-oriented organization that offers ample opportunities for growth and professional development. I look forward to being successful here if I am offered the position."

Role Specific Success Example
"Success receives interpretation in many different ways, but I know I have been successful when I feel that relief and contentment only accomplishment can bring. As a project manager at BAE Systems plc, success would include having clearly defined objectives, developing high-performance team dynamics, delivering on time, delivering on budget, and meeting the project's goals."

User-Submitted Answer
"Interesting question – I define success in a lot of ways actually. Being content with our life is a success. Not hating Sunday, because Monday is coming is a success. Being passionate about what I do, is more successful than a lot of people could wish for. Essentially it’s the ability to reach the goals set out for me and the ability to grow."

2. Tell me about an achievement you are proud of. What did you find challenging about it?
How to Answer
There are two ways to answer this question. You can either discuss an example of when you overcame obstacles to achieve something great or share a significant accomplishment or award you received and talk about what was challenging about it. Either way, you show your determination and focus on reaching your goal.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to think of a situation that highlights your strengths and qualities that will be helpful for the job for which you are interviewing. Try to keep your answer as career-relevant as possible.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I am the most proud of being selected as a BAE Systems intern last year. BAE Systems has a reputation for recruiting top talent. Landing an internship was a goal for most of the talented people in our junior class. I worked really hard in school to get excellent grades and learn as much as possible. I also invested a lot of time researching this company and the types of responsibilities I would have as an intern prior to my interview.
The most challenging part was to make sure that I gave my coursework the attention it deserved. I worked part time and volunteered while I was in college, and my schedule was hectic at times. I used a number of time management techniques to make sure that I stayed on top of everything.
I am so thankful that all of my hard work was rewarded with the opportunity to learn from the experts here at BAE Systems. I am looking forward to becoming a permanent part of the team soon if I am extended an offer for this position."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Graduation With Honors Example
"One achievement I am proud of is graduating from University as an honors student while working full time. This accomplishment showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and earn recognition for my dedication."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Deserved Promotion Example
"I was hired at a junior level in my last role. I had recently graduated and lacked experience. I worked a lot of hours to learn about my customers and their business through shadowing. I learned all of the systems available to me. I did a lot of research and sought out mentors to learn from. I was able to jump in and be effective in my role quickly as a result. Over a year, my customers started coming to me directly instead of the senior-level co-workers on my team. My manager began assigning me their work and letting me lead initiatives.
I set up a meeting to discuss my progress and a possible promotion. My manager said she wasn't quite ready to promote me because people in my position usually only get promoted every few years. She said I was still lacking experience. I let her know I understood and respected her position but felt I had demonstrated a commitment to the work and my customers beyond the usual and customary level of effort. I gave her examples of my excellence despite my time in the role and reminded her that she had even asked me to lead initiatives because my work had been outstanding. I thanked her for listening and assured her I would respect her decision.
A month later, review time came around. I was shocked to learn she promoted me to two levels in my role. She said she appreciated my humble response to our last conversation and that I gave her a lot to think about. She talked with several of my peers and customers, and they all agreed I would be able to continue to perform well and that I should be rewarded for working so hard to get up to speed and add value. She said I exemplified the type of spirit she wanted members of her team to have and that she was willing to make a compelling case to HR for the double promotion in my favor. I was proud of myself for standing up for what I felt I deserved."

User-Submitted Answer
"A few months ago my answer would have been moving to England with a suitcase and a couple of hundred of pounds in my pocket. This changed in November when I accepted my first-class honors degree with the OU. Whilst it is the biggest achievement I’m proud of, it was also the biggest challenge to complete a full-time degree, whilst working full and a part-time job at the time. It required great time management skills, and mostly giving up social life entirely!"

Ask The Interviewer
3. What questions do you have for me?
How to Answer
Ask an engaging question that shows the depth of interest in the role you are applying for, or the group you will be working with. Your questions can be culturally based, or related to the various technologies or projects you might be working on if hired.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to direct questions about salary and benefits to the HR recruiter you are working with. The BAE Systems interview preparation website instructs candidates to follow this protocol. Wasting time on questions your interviewer is not allowed to answer demonstrates a lack of preparation and wastes valuable interview time.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"As an entry level quality engineer, it is my understanding that I will be working directly with the Quality Management System on a regular basis, and it will be a requirement for me to develop an in-depth understanding of how it works. I was wondering if there are any documents or other sources of information you feel would be helpful for me to review prior to my start date if I am hired for the position. I would love the opportunity to learn about how the QMS works before I begin."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Experienced Example
"I am really excited about the possibility of working as a senior engineer here at BAE systems. Can you describe the process for onboarding someone at my level in terms of learning about the exact technologies I will be working with? Are there training classes, or will I be shadowing other engineers? I am comfortable with whatever approach you find works best for new employees."

4. How do you manage your time?
How to Answer
Time management is a self-regulating behavior required for success in many professional roles. Describe how you ensure that you stay on task and achieve your goals on a daily and long-term basis.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to describe any tools you use to manage your time. You might mention a calendar, a to-do list, or specific time management apps. You may also use long-term planning tools such as roadmaps or project plans, depending on your work.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"The first thing I do is to work with my superiors to understand the expectation for how my time should be spent. For example, as an entry level software engineer it would be important to know how much time I should spend coding, debugging, automating, shadowing, networking, etcetera.
On a day-to-day basis, I like to develop a high level plan with specific goals first thing in the morning. I keep it flexible to allow for new requests or unexpected challenges. I review my progress at the end of each day and put in extra time as needed to ensure my work is completed on time."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Delivery Date Priority Example
"I will determine which project requires my attention by the number of hours we are behind and the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require additional hours from me. Never have I underdelivered on a deadline."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Use of Technology Example
"Time management has been something I have worked on improving since my time in University. I set goals for myself and give a time deadline for those goals. Also, I am diligent with my calendar and have a great scheduling app on my phone that I refer to as well."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
User-Submitted Answer
"This is an interesting question because while this is one of my major strengths, I think I improved a lot over the last 3-4 years, mainly due to managing two jobs and my full-time university studies simultaneously.
I strongly believe that the secret of managing time well is being able to identify priorities and set targets. Targets are great, as they provide an opportunity to review performance against something measurable. I tend to use OneNote a lot, as it has tremendous potential to organize tasks, and it is also able to save documents (even emails) so that I can keep everything in one place."

5. How often do you think of innovations that will improve your work performance?
How to Answer
Coming up with ideas to increase productivity and efficiency and save time and energy is a great way to make an impact on your coworkers and the company. The ability to see problems as opportunities is a skill that can make you an essential asset to a company. Give the interviewer a sense of how you approach making changes that improve your work performance or your team's work.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Think of a time you had a chance to make a difference by changing a process or procedure, and share it with the interviewer. This will support your answer to their question.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"One of the product development concepts I learned in college was continual improvement. Processes are fluid and small changes can reduce waste and improve performance. I try to look at anything I do in the workplace through that lens. I reflect weekly to think about what I could improve, or what I have observed others doing well that I could incorporate into my approach.
For example, I asked if I could be included on my team's daily status call when I was an intern. I was not originally invited, but I was often asked to take on tasks that were discussed in the meeting. My teammates would then have to bring me to up speed on what was discussed.
The process was inefficient and attending the meetings sped things up a lot. I was able to stay in the loop and regularly offered to take on tasks that I knew I could handle. I took notes for the team and they found that to be helpful as well."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Once a Month Example
"I would say that at least once a month, I have an idea, big or small, that I present to my manager. My most recent innovation was (give a detailed example)."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Continual Improvement Example
"I am always thinking of new ways to increase productivity and improve the methods I use to complete my work. The teams I manage use agile methodologies for product development. It is part of our process to reflect daily and at the end of each iteration. I toss out ideas to help us improve our work often during these sessions.
For example, one of my roles is to remove roadblocks for others. Last week I set up a knowledge-sharing opportunity with friends at another company to help my team gather some expertise we needed to move forward. It is pretty unheard of at my company to talk with this competitor, but we were able to share knowledge that was not proprietary, and everyone got something out of it."

Entry Level Example
"I am very excited at the possibility of working here at BAE Systems. A heavy workload will lead directly to the experience I am motivated to acquire. Balance for me includes working hard and learning as much as I can. Natural Balance Example
"I find that, with the right company, it's simple to balance life and work. When I enjoy what I do, it doesn't feel like a chore. When I'm at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and regenerate before the work week begins."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Take Time for Myself Example
"I understand that every day will not be balanced. I can achieve a great work/life balance most days when I take some time to do something for myself, whether that be a quick workout or cooking a delicious meal when I get home. I noticed on your company website that flexibility is part of the culture at BAE Systems plc. I love that the employees can speak to the company's support for their wellness."

How to Answer
We all like recognition in some way for our accomplishments in the workplace. Share with the interviewer how you would want credit for your hard work. Some options are bonuses or financial perks, public recognition, kind words, or promotion opportunities.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to keep your answer simple. Interviewers are less likely to resonate with answers that give the impression a candidate will be high maintenance or has complex recognition requirements.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example

At this stage in my career I realize that recognition may be subtle as I am mostly focused on learning and growth, but I am motivated to learn all I can so that I can add value to the teams I will be working with."

How to Answer
BAE Systems develops solutions within an industry that changes quickly. Talk to the interviewer about how you view change and adapt to new circumstances.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to place a positive spin on your answer, even if you sometimes struggle with change. Be honest, but give a balanced response.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
1st Entry Level Example
"I feel I am usually quick to adapt to change. As an entry-level employee, I may not have the experience and insight to challenge a new process, so I prefer to focus more on learning how to work with the change and understanding all of the options available to me in my role."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"When a change occurs, I initially try to balance the pros and the cons before reacting. Overall, I would say that I prefer to focus on why the changes will work. I am a positive person by nature."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Some changes can be tougher to accept immediately than others. Once I understand the motivation behind the change, I can easily adapt. I am flexible and agile, which is why I love working in an industry with such a high rate of change."

User-Submitted Answer
"I am a positive person, so I always try to find ways to make things work. I often think that resisting change can hinder improvement and innovation, therefore I believe it is important to embrace it. The momentum around sustainability is really mind-blowing and astonishing, and it also means that it is a fast-paced industry. All disciplines and sectors are trying to meet their targets and align their policies with the government’s aspirations for net zero and this subsequently drives change. 9. If you were given a choice, which work related task would you leave for last? Why?
How to Answer
Often, we will leave the tasks we don't like for last in the act of procrastination. Other times, we mindfully choose to do something last because we feel it makes the most sense. Help the interviewer determine which personality type you are by answering this question.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to include a strategy for diligently handling the task you mention in your response if it does not make sense to leave it to last. For example, if you state that you would reply to emails last, you should explain that you know this is not always feasible and that you schedule time regularly to ensure you are communicating with your coworkers or customers effectively.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I would fill out my time sheets last. While it is necessary, logging time is not the most engaging part of my day. I prefer interactive or analytical tasks. I keep a running list of what I work on and how much time I spend each day to make the process as easy and efficient as possible at my current company."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Documentation Example
"If given a choice, I would leave my documentation tasks for last. I say this because I like to spend my time with my customers, and I feel that anything to do with documentation during business hours takes away from my client-facing tasks. I do understand the importance of it, though."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Email Example
"I would leave my email to last. I find that once I am in my email, it's a never-ending whirlwind of small replies and to-dos. For this reason, and to remain focused and productive, I will schedule my email time periodically throughout the day."

Makes sense! You can also mention that leaving these kinds of tasks to last allows you to gather all the details and information you need so you can complete them accurately. Also, explain how much you enjoy interacting with clients and that one of your strengths is your personable nature. It's great that you reiterate to the interviewer that you will still get these administrative tasks done because you understand their importance. 10. How do you like to encourage ideas in others?
How to Answer
Encouragement of others is a great skill to possess. Talk to the interviewer about your ability to encourage creative ideas in your team members.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to mention any methods you are familiar with to generate ideas, such as the facilitation of brainstorming sessions or other strategic thinking methodologies. Interviewers value candidates who have experience working with best practices in addition to their own methods.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I encourage ideas through my open and accepting approach to working with others. I am a good listener, and people seem to feel comfortable discussing their ideas with me. I offer thoughtful feedback to help them advance their ideas when appropriate."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Present Unique Ideas Example
"I like to encourage other people to be creative in their thinking and present ideas to the company, no matter how off the wall they may seem. Some of our most successful employees are confident in their ability to bring forward their unique ideas. I encourage participation through an open door policy and strong praise for those who show initiative."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Answer Example
"I encourage others by creating a safe space for my teammates to think and share ideas. We have developed a nurturing culture that recognizes that the only dumb ideas are those you are afraid to share. All options are welcome because they might lead someone to the best idea possible.
I use several brainstorming exercises to help get things flowing and create a comfortable and playful physical environment that encourages creativity. For example, the space for my current team has beanbags, toys, snacks, whiteboards, markers, motivational quotes, a lot of light, and other things that set the stage for a comfortable and fun environment to develop ideas."

That's great that you have a clean background record! Because this question just asks about criminal background, credit, and education verification, there is no need to share that you do not smoke or use drugs. They did not mention a drug test, so I would recommend leaving this part out unless you're explicitly asked. While it's clear that you'd pass a drug test if it were requested, I discourage oversharing in the interview process.

30. Many of our industry competitors have their employees under a non-compete contract. Are you bound by any non-compete contract with your current employer?
How to Answer
The interviewer would like to avoid any hurdles during the offer and negotiations stage that would prevent you from being successfully onboarded. If BAE Systems is a direct competitor to your current or most recent employer, you should carefully review your employment contract to ensure nothing is hindering you.

31. How do you think your early career will help you succeed in this position?
How to Answer
Some individuals work in impactful positions that establish professional behaviors early in their careers. Many hiring managers agree that the best employees are ones with 'grit' and who have held a 'dirty job' or two in their lives. Talk to the interviewer about your early work experience.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Consider discussing lessons you learned in your educational career if your professional career experience is limited. Some individuals work toward advanced degrees before they have a chance to gain significant professional experience, but their effort and the lessons they learn can help them to find success at BAE Systems.

Entry Level Example
"I worked part time in college as a virtual assistant. That experience helped me to improve my time management, task management, scheduling, communication, and customer service skills. I feel all of those skill sets will help me to successfully plan my work, execute my tasks, and deliver my work with a high level of quality and accountability if offered the position here at BAE Systems."

Physical Labor and Customer Service Example
"I have been working since I was 14 years old. My first job was as a shop hand for my father, who was a mechanic. I had to sweep, clean, greet customers, and order parts. It was a great way to get my hands dirty, and I was taught excellent customer service skills at an early age. Everything I learned during that time has helped me stay grounded and humble in my career."

32. Who would you say inspires you?
How to Answer
In most discussions, you will get one or two personal questions to see how you present yourself. You want to be able to articulate yourself well, responding politely and even passionately when appropriate.
An excellent way to respond to this question is by sharing a story about a person who has been a positive influence on you and your career. If your dad motivated you to push through to finish your education, talk about how that impacted you. Discuss someone who showed you that it was possible to overcome even the most significant obstacles. Tell the story of the person who taught you the skills that brought you to the interview. Any of these options are likely to resonate well with the interviewer.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to show your preparedness for the interview by having an immediate answer. The only wrong answer here is, "I don't know." You can even consider describing your ideal future self as your inspiration.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I am inspired by one of my professors in college. She worked in the aerospace and defense industry for years and is very passionate about educating the engineers of the future to develop responsible and intelligent solutions. I have learned a lot from her, and I hope to find a mentor with the same passion for teaching if hired for the open position."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Future Self Example
"I am inspired by my vision of who I dreamed I would be as a child. I loved to engineer all sorts of ships and aircrafts out of Legos when I was younger. My imagination had no bounds, and I was constantly upgrading the features of each design to add value and try new things. I imagined I would one day be an engineer that would design and build the kinds of aerospace technology you develop here at BAE Systems. I have leaned on that vision for inspiration at every step of my career, and I am excited about the opportunity to bring it to life here if selected for the role."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Family Member Example
"I have always been inspired by my grandfather. He is the person who gave me an initial interest in the aerospace field. He is the hardest working person I know, and he taught me how important it is to read and continually grow. Because of him, I always seek to learn."
User-Submitted Answer

33. It seems that your resume is missing certain skills necessary for this position. How do you plan to compensate for these missing skills?
How to Answer
Most job descriptions will have a long list of requirements. Hiring managers know that finding a candidate that checks all the boxes can sometimes be impossible. If you are missing some of the "nice to have" or even the "must-have" skills listed in the job description, do not fret. Be open about your shortcomings and discuss with the interviewer how you plan to compensate for them.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to demonstrate your willingness to educate yourself and learn the skills necessary for success in the role. Use your time before an interview to research your skill opportunities to establish that you are proactively working to address the gaps.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I recognize that I am missing some of the required skills. I understand how important it is to hire a candidate who has a skill set in alignment with the job description. However, I was able to demonstrate that I am a quick learner and motivated to address gaps in my skills during my recent internship at Boeing. I also proved that I am motivated and willing to put in extra effort as needed. I have provided the contact information for my manager there. She is willing to speak to my ability to add value while I come up to speed on new concepts. I feel I would be able to perform similarly here at BAE Systems."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Nice to Have Skill Missing Example
"I recognized I was missing one of the nice-to-have skills from the job description. I took some time to research what it entails before applying for this role. I wanted to be able to bridge the gap in my skills and experience. I am reading a book on XYZ, and I recently completed an online course on this subject. I am not yet an expert, but I look forward to the opportunity to continue to grow my skills if offered the position."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Required Skill Missing From Resume Example
"I would be happy to clarify my experience in the required skills you feel are not properly represented on my resume. I read the job description thoroughly before applying, and I feel confident I have a background that aligns with the needs described. Can you tell me which item is in question?"
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
User-Submitted Answer
"I am a fast learner, and a hard worker – I’m willing to go the extra mile and take extra time if needed to be able to catch up with the rest of the team in a short period of time. I never had an issue learning new systems and processes, and I strongly believe I wouldn’t have an issue now either."

Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to dream big. Interviewers appreciate candidates willing to imagine a future that goes beyond what is currently possible today.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I feel the future of our planet and the aerospace industry are directly related. Specifically, I think we will be focused globally and within aerospace on the development of zero fuel technologies as well as the use of advanced materials that are environmentally responsible. Top aerospace and defense companies are currently focused on innovation in this area, and I think it will continue to be a focus for the foreseeable future."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Interplanetary Travel Example
"I see the possibility for interplanetary travel in our future, and I think it will be a huge area of focus twenty years from now. We are on the cusp of major discoveries that will allow us to survive in space for longer periods. We are also moving toward discoveries that could allow us to travel distances we have not yet been able to achieve. I think BAE Systems plc has the potential to play a critical role in this area."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
AI Technology Example
"I think we will be working to balance our use of human consciousness and artificial intelligence in greater and greater ways twenty years from now. We are at the beginning stages of understanding what that integrated world could look like now, and I think the aerospace industry will continue to make breakthroughs in this area for the next two decades."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Industry Knowledge
35. In your opinion, what is the biggest breakthrough in the aerospace and defense industry in the past decade?
How to Answer
The interviewer wants to ensure that you hold strong knowledge and genuine interest in the aerospace and defense industry. If you are familiar with the industry, you will know about some of the latest industry breakthroughs. Briefly discuss which one has caught your interest the most.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to include a brief note on the purpose of the breakthrough. For example, if you mention the introduction of advanced autonomous systems in aerospace, mention that it has the potential to save lives by increasing the opportunity to use human-free flights in dangerous situations.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I feel the most exciting breakthrough in the aerospace and defense industry has been the continued use of artificial intelligence. I realize that AI was introduced prior to the last decade, but it continues to evolve in new and unexpected ways. Finding a responsible balance in the use of AI was a focus area of my post-grad work and I am looking forward to the opportunity to help define how we use technology to improve the safety and wellbeing of the human race."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Specific breakthrough Example
"There have been endless breakthroughs in our industry; however, the one that excited me the most was the Falcon 9 Full Thrust. It's amazing to me that a partially-reusable launch system is in existence."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Field convergence Example
"The biggest recent breakthrough in our industry, in my opinion, is less of a single technological or manufacturing breakthrough and more of a convergence of several fields. For example, the use of blockchain technology typically applied to cryptocurrency trading has had a significant impact on aerospace security and the ability to trade efficiently. The aerospace industry seems to understand that best practices from the manufacturing, finance, and technology sectors can be applied creatively to enhance its own sector."

Leadership
36. How have you demonstrated leadership ability when you were not in a leadership role?
How to Answer
This question challenges you to think about how you act as a leader in your daily life. Even if you're not leading a team, you can still demonstrate the qualities of a leader. Offer the interviewer examples of your ability to lead by example and inspire and serve others.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022

Remember to share how you have positively influenced others through your actions to support and motivate others at work. You can give an example of how you coached a coworker having difficulty preparing for a big presentation. Maybe you gave them confidence in their strengths by encouraging them, or perhaps you offered helpful hints. You can be a motivator and a confident communicator in any situation at work!
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"Absolutely. I have learned that there are several leadership styles and you do not have to be in an official leadership role to lead. Every person on a team can be a leader. For example, cheerleading is a leadership skill. I am great at acknowledging the accomplishments of my teammates in my current role, and I provide encouragement and support during difficult times."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Lead by Example Example
"I demonstrate leadership qualities every chance that I get! I believe that everyone can be a great leader if given the right environment and opportunity. I believe it is important to plan your work, work your plan, and lead by example."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Mentoring Example
"I naturally take on a leader and mentorship role with my coworkers. In one instance, I had a new coworker who was having trouble fitting in. I took her out for lunch and talked about the workplace culture and semantics surrounding the various departments. I wanted her to stay and enjoy her employment with us, so I ensured she was settling in well. I believe there are always leadership opportunities - you have to keep your eyes open."

User-Submitted Answer
"In my current role, I am not in a leadership role. When our carbon modeler left two years ago, I was left alone with all our projects, with no one else at the company at the time specializing in carbon assessments. Leadership
37. What level of experience do you have managing and developing personnel?
How to Answer
Some positions at BAE Systems require a candidate to work as the direct manager of other employees. Briefly discuss any experience you have managing others with your interviewer. If you have not had direct experience in this area, discuss any time you have spent working as a mentor or coach.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Remember To
Remember to discuss your personnel management and development experience from prior roles if your experience in your current role is limited. Also, include your experience assigning work and weighing in on performance reviews if you are not a direct manager.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Entry Level Example
"I currently work as an assistant manager, and I lead my teams when my manager is not working. I have experience scheduling, assigning tasks, training, and assessing the performance of others.
I recognize this is an entry level position and I will not have direct reports initially. However, I feel my experience has helped me to acquire leadership skills that will add value to my teams here at BAE Systems if selected for the position."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Direct Experience Example
"I am currently a manager of a team of eight employees. I handle all of their HR-related management needs and help develop them professionally. I coach them directly or help them find a mentor in line with their specific needs. Before this role, I served as a senior leader on the teams I worked with. I helped to coach and monitor the work progress of the junior level resources on my teams."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
Indirect Experience Example
"I do not have experience as a direct manager. My background lies in working in a matrixed organization where the cross-functional resources I lead report to centralized HR managers. However, I am responsible for managing the work assignments of three project managers. I discuss their performance with their managers and weigh in heavily on their reviews. The majority of their professional development comes from working with me or with mentors I help them select.
Finally, I participate in the hiring process for the majority of the resources for our teams, and I am typically involved with the management of any identified performance issues. I feel confident that I would be able to handle any direct resource management opportunities I may have at BAE Systems plc if hired."

38. Have you progressed in your career as you expected?
How to Answer
Career progression can be a touchy subject, especially if you feel that your career hasn't progressed as well as you would have liked. Talk to the interviewer about your career progression and what you would like to see in the future.
Remember To
Remember to demonstrate resiliency in your response if you have experienced career progression setbacks. Interviewers value candidates that can rebound when faced with an unexpected challenge.
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
1st Entry Level Example
"I am happy with my career progression. I worked for several years after high school to make the money needed to put myself through college because I wanted to be able to focus full time on my classes without worrying about working or acquiring large student loans. I feel the experience I gained working full time before college will be valuable to my career progression. It helped me to establish leadership and time management skills that will be an asset to the team I join next."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Overall, my career has progressed slower than I would have liked. I have held a couple of positions that didn't offer the growth and learning I was expecting; however, I have bounced back nicely. I feel that this particular position would take my career exactly where it should be."
Written by Karrie Day on December 30th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Yes, I am happy with my career progression. I have always been the type to set out a detailed plan for myself and take the required action steps to get there. This position is most definitely in line with my expected career progression."
User-Submitted Answer
"Well, yes and no! It took me a while to figure out what I would like to do with my career. I only had a chance to start my degree when I reached 30, and that was only 4 years ago. I then got caught in that catch-22 we all know – not being hired because I had no experience, but having no experience because I wasn’t hired anywhere! I only found my calling a little less than 3 years ago, so there was only little opportunity for progression, but I already do more, and being responsible for more than anyone can wish for after only just a few years."

I am careful to use a humble and respectful approach when I disagree with any team member. I am also prepared to honor whatever decision is ultimately made by giving my best effort."
