BAE Systems says, "We know you want to put your best foot forward with us." They also offer a few tips to succeed in your BAE Systems interview: "First impressions matter. Wearing professional attire to the interview conveys respect and is always appropriate. Don't wear clothes that are uncomfortable to the point of being distracting. HireVue offers some similar advice: "We recommend that you wear exactly what you would for a traditional face-to-face interview. This can mean something different for every company and position, so we recommend picking your outfit based on the role you are interviewing for. Think about it this way: if you're applying to a non-customer-facing role, it will probably have a more casual dress code, and a nice, clean top, free of excess writing, will probably do for your interview! Alternatively, if you're applying for a role where you'd typically wear a suit and tie every day, we recommend you do the same for your interview. It may feel a little different to put on your Sunday best for your kitchen table, but hey, at least you won't have to get it pressed again after this, right?"

2. How do you deal with change?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
It's not uncommon for a company to undergo directional or policy changes when responding to shifts in their industry or changes in leadership. Quite often, employees struggle with such change, especially when the messaging isn't crystal clear or adaptable to every employee's communication style. This results in dissent and a lack of trust in leadership. One could argue such communication difficulties could be blamed on upper management. Yet, poor communication is more commonly the fault of those who don't ask questions, don't actively listen, are guided by their emotions rather than by facts, and lead from assumption. One of BAE System's key behaviors is 'Adaptability,' which they define as responding to change "with positive action." Therefore this question aims to determine how adaptable you are to change and how emotionally intelligent you are.

What You Need to Know
HireVue offers some conflicting advice on its site. On one webpage, they advise candidates to "Ensure you are in a quiet room or area, well lit and free of distractions." Then on another page, they say, "If your dog barks or your kid runs across the screen-relax. It's okay. Your employer will understand, and if they don't, perhaps it's not the right culture fit for you. And that's okay. This is your time to showcase who you are and what you can add to an organization." Remember, they are working for BAE Systems. So when in doubt, err on the side of professionalism. You want to exude the same level of professionalism as you would in a controlled environment of the interviewer's choosing.
Make sure you are in a relatively quiet place with as little background noise as possible. HireVue also says, "And don't forget to check your lighting. Make sure it's in front of you. Lighting from behind makes it hard to see you." So, make sure your lighting is equally balanced. The camera angle should be at eye level as well. Positioning it too low will make you come across as domineering. Too high, and you'll seem too weak or small. So center it and maintain eye contact in front of the camera as if you're speaking face-to-face with a person. Looking at yourself on the screen could be interpreted as looking down, which is a sign of lacking confidence. So practice beforehand until you are comfortable with this style of interview and come across as if you are speaking to a real person.

Allow some time before the interview to enter the virtual interview room and check that the webcam, sound, and lighting are suitable for your interview before it begins. Close any unnecessary browsers or applications that may notify you and distract you on your device during your interview. Have a glass of water ready if you need it during the interview. HireVue offers similar advice on their website: "Virtual interviewing is similar to the video calls many of us have been using. Since you can interview from anywhere, make sure it's somewhere you're comfortable. You will use a computer, tablet, or mobile device to answer questions created by the company for the position you are applying for. Ensure you've got the strongest Wi-Fi signal possible."

This question will help the assessment vendor evaluate how confident you are that you're the right fit for this opportunity and whether you're pursuing it for the right reasons. So, before the interview, research the body language of a confident and relaxed person in a seated position. Pump yourself up with physical exercise to manifest confidence. Go into a private space with a mirror, look yourself in the eye, and give yourself a pep talk. Raise your arms, stretch your back, and make yourself as big as possible. HireVue offers practice questions on their website to prepare you for their process. "While virtual interviewing isn't difficult, a little practice can help you prepare. Most on-demand interviews ask you to give your answer in just a few minutes. It's helpful to think about how you will illustrate your skills clearly in that timeframe, and to practice them out loud." This can be worth taking advantage of because when you start BAE Systems' interview, you'll have roughly 20-30 seconds per question to form your response. Once it starts recording, you'll be allowed up to three minutes to provide each answer. There are no retakes. Also, some questions may take longer to answer than others, but only take as much time as you need. Don't try to run out the clock or allow it to cut you off. Be as succinct as possible.

There are a variety of packages HireVue offers to their clients. Some request only the recorded videos and no assessment reports. Some request the report while others request screening and only receive those which pass the algorithm's evaluations as potential top performers. The assessment model will evaluate your level of honesty based on the consistency between your non-verbal cues and what you're communicating verbally, including your confidence in your statements, the consistency of your answers from one question to the next, and whether you unintentionally contradict yourself from answer to answer or from your resume.
A candidate's tone, facial expressions, body language, and mannerisms will be interpreted as their true feelings, intentions, and attitudes. When these are incongruent with your words and statements, it is commonly considered an indication of limited emotional intelligence or burnout syndrome. You'll want to come across as emotionally mature and not regress into the emotion of that conflict when reflecting upon it. So avoid any defensive behavior, posturing, movements, or gestures that could be interpreted as insecure, closed-off, unapproachable, hostile, or disinterested. You may think coming across as a strong figure could be beneficial, but true strength comes from within. Therefore, you want to come across as confident and relaxed.

The assessment vendor will study your performance for signs of discomfort or dishonesty. Verbal cues they'll analyze to identify if you're exaggerating or not being completely honest include repeating a question before answering, speaking in sentence fragments, displaying a change in speech pattern, irregular speech, and rising and falling tone. When your words don't match your gestures, your gestures will be seen as the truth. So maintain eye contact and confident body language, be comfortable, and speak from the heart.
