"As an entry-level employee, I am focused on success in two areas. First, I feel it is important for me to meet and exceed the goals I am given by my manager. I know it will take time, but I strive to achieve excellence in any role that I take on. Secondly, I feel successful when I am able to add value to my team. I know I am successful when my teammates value my contributions and know they can rely on me to do my part."

Tell me about an achievement you are proud of. What did you find challenging about it?

"I am the most proud of being selected as a BAE Systems intern last year. BAE Systems has a reputation for recruiting top talent. Landing an internship was a goal for most of the talented people in our junior class. I worked really hard in school to get excellent grades and learn as much as possible. I also invested a lot of time researching this company and the types of responsibilities I would have as an intern prior to my interview.The most challenging part was to make sure that I gave my coursework the attention it deserved. I worked part time and volunteered while I was in college, and my schedule was hectic at times. I used a number of time management techniques to make sure that I stayed on top of everything. I am so thankful that all of my hard work was rewarded with the opportunity to learn from the experts here at BAE Systems. I am looking forward to becoming a permanent part of the team soon if I am extended an offer for this position."

"One achievement I am proud of is graduating from University as an honors student while working full time. This accomplishment showed me that I could dedicate myself to my career and reach the goals that I set for myself. It felt great to accomplish so much and earn recognition for my dedication."

"I was hired at a junior level in my last role. I had recently graduated and lacked experience. I worked a lot of hours to learn about my customers and their business through shadowing. I learned all of the systems available to me. I did a lot of research and sought out mentors to learn from. I was able to jump in and be effective in my role quickly as a result. Over a year, my customers started coming to me directly instead of the senior-level co-workers on my team. My manager began assigning me their work and letting me lead initiatives. I set up a meeting to discuss my progress and a possible promotion. My manager said she wasn't quite ready to promote me because people in my position usually only get promoted every few years. She said I was still lacking experience. I let her know I understood and respected her position but felt I had demonstrated a commitment to the work and my customers beyond the usual and customary level of effort. I gave her examples of my excellence despite my time in the role and reminded her that she had even asked me to lead initiatives because my work had been outstanding. I thanked her for listening and assured her I would respect her decision. A month later, review time came around. I was shocked to learn she promoted me to two levels in my role. She said she appreciated my humble response to our last conversation and that I gave her a lot to think about. She talked with several of my peers and customers, and they all agreed I would be able to continue to perform well and that I should be rewarded for working so hard to get up to speed and add value. She said I exemplified the type of spirit she wanted members of her team to have and that she was willing to make a compelling case to HR for the double promotion in my favor. I was proud of myself for standing up for what I felt I deserved."

"A few months ago my answer would have been moving to England with a suitcase and a couple of hundred of pounds in my pocket. This changed in November when I accepted my first-class honors degree with the OU. Whilst it is the biggest achievement I’m proud of, it was also the biggest challenge to complete a full-time degree, whilst working full and a part-time job at the time. It required great time management skills, and mostly giving up social life entirely!"

"A few years ago, I was selected as the Ph.D. candidate with a full scholarship and I’m very close to getting the Ph.D. degree. What questions do you have for me?

"As an entry level quality engineer, it is my understanding that I will be working directly with the Quality Management System on a regular basis, and it will be a requirement for me to develop an in-depth understanding of how it works. I was wondering if there are any documents or other sources of information you feel would be helpful for me to review prior to my start date if I am hired for the position. I would love the opportunity to learn about how the QMS works before I begin."

Ask an engaging question that shows the depth of interest in the role you are applying for, or the group you will be working with. Your questions can be culturally based, or related to the various technologies or projects you might be working on if hired.

"I am really excited about the possibility of working as a senior engineer here at BAE systems. Can you describe the process for onboarding someone at my level in terms of learning about the exact technologies I will be working with? Are there training classes, or will I be shadowing other engineers? I am comfortable with whatever approach you find works best for new employees."

How do you manage your time?

"The first thing I do is to work with my superiors to understand the expectation for how my time should be spent. For example, as an entry level software engineer it would be important to know how much time I should spend coding, debugging, automating, shadowing, networking, etcetera.On a day-to-day basis, I like to develop a high level plan with specific goals first thing in the morning. I keep it flexible to allow for new requests or unexpected challenges. I review my progress at the end of each day and put in extra time as needed to ensure my work is completed on time."

Time management is a self-regulating behavior required for success in many professional roles. Describe how you ensure that you stay on task and achieve your goals on a daily and long-term basis.

"I will determine which project requires my attention by the number of hours we are behind and the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require additional hours from me. Never have I underdelivered on a deadline."

"Time management has been something I have worked on improving since my time in University. I set goals for myself and give a time deadline for those goals. Also, I am diligent with my calendar and have a great scheduling app on my phone that I refer to as well."

"This is an interesting question because while this is one of my major strengths, I think I improved a lot over the last 3-4 years, mainly due to managing two jobs and my full-time university studies simultaneously.I strongly believe that the secret of managing time well is being able to identify priorities and set targets. Targets are great, as they provide an opportunity to review performance against something measurable. I tend to use OneNote a lot, as it has tremendous potential to organize tasks, and it is also able to save documents (even emails) so that I can keep everything in one place."

"I use the calendar on my phone that I use for major events or deadlines that are coming up. I then use to-do lists to break down the deadlines into smaller manageable tasks. For long-term projects, I have previously used Gantt charts which have also helped me to split up big projects."

"I first communicate with my teachers to understand a rough idea of how much time I should be spending on certain things, such as homework, projects, and additional work (for example programming practice). By gaining this insight on how much time I need to put into my school work I can then create a flexible timetable that considers my other commitments outside of school so that I can use my time efficiently. I design my timetable so that I can complete tasks well within their deadlines so that there is space if something unplanned comes up, allowing myself a chance to complete the work before the deadline. I like to chunk time together and set it aside for a certain thing, for example, when creating my current timetable I sectioned off two hours to work on coding a couple of times a week. These two hours would be dedicated to any sort of coding I needed or wanted to do and I could split the time however best suits me on that day for the task I am doing. But by sectioning off a chunk of time to do so I know that I have time to get on with or complete a coding task. As well, throughout each day I allow spaces on my timetable so that I can have a break from work or school and participate in a relaxing hobby such as baking or walking."

How often do you think of innovations that will improve your work performance?

"One of the product development concepts I learned in college was continual improvement. Processes are fluid and small changes can reduce waste and improve performance. I try to look at anything I do in the workplace through that lens. I reflect weekly to think about what I could improve, or what I have observed others doing well that I could incorporate into my approach.For example, I asked if I could be included on my team's daily status call when I was an intern. I was not originally invited, but I was often asked to take on tasks that were discussed in the meeting. My teammates would then have to bring me to up speed on what was discussed.The process was inefficient and attending the meetings sped things up a lot. I was able to stay in the loop and regularly offered to take on tasks that I knew I could handle. I took notes for the team and they found that to be helpful as well."

Coming up with ideas to increase productivity and efficiency and save time and energy is a great way to make an impact on your coworkers and the company. The ability to see problems as opportunities is a skill that can make you an essential asset to a company. Give the interviewer a sense of how you approach making changes that improve your work performance or your team's work.

Think of a time you had a chance to make a difference by changing a process or procedure, and share it with the interviewer. This will support your answer to their question.

"I would say that at least once a month, I have an idea, big or small, that I present to my manager. My most recent innovation was (give a detailed example)."

"I am always thinking of new ways to increase productivity and improve the methods I use to complete my work. The teams I manage use agile methodologies for product development. It is part of our process to reflect daily and at the end of each iteration. I toss out ideas to help us improve our work often during these sessions. For example, one of my roles is to remove roadblocks for others. Last week I set up a knowledge-sharing opportunity with friends at another company to help my team gather some expertise we needed to move forward. It is pretty unheard of at my company to talk with this competitor, but we were able to share knowledge that was not proprietary, and everyone got something out of it."

"Frequently – I do like well-oiled machines and well-working systems. But technology is moving so fast, and there are so many opportunities arising from it, it is honestly astonishing! I like to review the way I work from time to time, and I like to analyze it to identify areas for improvement."

"When working on group projects in university, I have always found that making the time to be in a virtual meeting when writing our project helps to maximize productivity. Because of this, we are all working at the same time which enables us to ask each other questions and have them answered as soon as possible. We can also see what each member is doing and give immediate feedback. By all being on the same call and writing the report at the same time, we also didn’t waste time waiting for other people to finish their sections so we could submit it as soon as possible."

"I found starting the revision for my A levels a difficult thing but I knew it was important to me to achieve my full potential. To overcome this issue of procrastination I researched ways to improve studying and thought about how best to help myself. I tried different techniques until I found a strategy that worked for me. I found that using the Pomodoro method help me to stay focused on the revision."

Your workload will be large at BAE Systems. How do you balance life and work?

"I am very excited at the possibility of working here at BAE Systems. A heavy workload will lead directly to the experience I am motivated to acquire. Balance for me includes working hard and learning as much as I can. However, I recognize the importance of downtime, and I have a number of activities I regularly participate in that help to support my physical and mental wellness. I feel confident these activities will help me to maintain balance if selected for the open position."

"I am open to any form of recognition. I realize that individuals approach offering encouragement and thanks differently, and I am happy to accept whatever positive assessments are offered. At this stage in my career I realize that recognition may be subtle as I am mostly focused on learning and growth, but I am motivated to learn all I can so that I can add value to the teams I will be working with."

We all like recognition in some way for our accomplishments in the workplace. Share with the interviewer how you would want credit for your hard work. Some options are bonuses or financial perks, public recognition, kind words, or promotion opportunities.

Remember to keep your answer simple. Interviewers are less likely to resonate with answers that give the impression a candidate will be high maintenance or has complex recognition requirements.

"I am an over-achiever and find that the best way to be recognized for a job well done is through words of kindness and recognition. I am easily encouraged, and the best reward is to know that my hard work makes a difference."

Would you say you focus more on the reasons a change will not work rather than adapting to new changes?

"I feel I am usually quick to adapt to change. As an entry-level employee, I may not have the experience and insight to challenge a new process, so I prefer to focus more on learning how to work with the change and understanding all of the options available to me in my role."

"When a change occurs, I initially try to balance the pros and the cons before reacting. Overall, I would say that I prefer to focus on why the changes will work. I am a positive person by nature."

"Some changes can be tougher to accept immediately than others. Once I understand the motivation behind the change, I can easily adapt. I am flexible and agile, which is why I love working in an industry with such a high rate of change."

"I am a positive person, so I always try to find ways to make things work. I often think that resisting change can hinder improvement and innovation, therefore I believe it is important to embrace it. The momentum around sustainability is really mind-blowing and astonishing, and it also means that it is a fast-paced industry. All disciplines and sectors are trying to meet their targets and align their policies with the government’s aspirations for net zero and this subsequently drives change. It is a good thing because change is exactly what we need right now."

If you were given a choice, which work related task would you leave for last? Why?

"I would fill out my time sheets last. While it is necessary, logging time is not the most engaging part of my day. I prefer interactive or analytical tasks. I keep a running list of what I work on and how much time I spend each day to make the process as easy and efficient as possible at my current company."

Often, we will leave the tasks we don't like for last in the act of procrastination. Other times, we mindfully choose to do something last because we feel it makes the most sense. Help the interviewer determine which personality type you are by answering this question.

Remember to include a strategy for diligently handling the task you mention in your response if it does not make sense to leave it to last. For example, if you state that you would reply to emails last, you should explain that you know this is not always feasible and that you schedule time regularly to ensure you are communicating with your coworkers or customers effectively.

"If given a choice, I would leave my documentation tasks for last. I say this because I like to spend my time with my customers, and I feel that anything to do with documentation during business hours takes away from my client-facing tasks. I do understand the importance of it, though."

"I would leave my email to last. I find that once I am in my email, it's a never-ending whirlwind of small replies and to-dos. For this reason, and to remain focused and productive, I will schedule my email time periodically throughout the day."

"I would leave the task of administrative work and documentation to last as it can often drag on and I could instead be using this time to be face-to-face with clients and doing other such tasks. However, I still would count these tasks as a priority as I understand their importance."

How do you like to encourage ideas in others?

"I encourage ideas through my open and accepting approach to working with others. I am a good listener, and people seem to feel comfortable discussing their ideas with me. I offer thoughtful feedback to help them advance their ideas when appropriate."

Encouragement of others is a great skill to possess. Talk to the interviewer about your ability to encourage creative ideas in your team members.

Remember to mention any methods you are familiar with to generate ideas, such as the facilitation of brainstorming sessions or other strategic thinking methodologies. Interviewers value candidates who have experience working with best practices in addition to their own methods.

"I like to encourage other people to be creative in their thinking and present ideas to the company, no matter how off the wall they may seem. Some of our most successful employees are confident in their ability to bring forward their unique ideas. I feel that experience will serve as a foundation for the experience I will need to move onto more senior technician roles in which I will be actively making repairs, troubleshooting, and performing preventative maintenance duties."

I am a rather ambitious person, career progression is extremely important to me, and for that, I’m willing to work hard."

Rate your communication skills from 1-10 with proper examples backing your given rating.

"I rate my communication skills a 7 out of 10. I feel I am a strong communicator, but I lack experience with enterprise-level communication. I feel confident I will be able to leverage the skills I do have to become an effective corporate communicator quickly."

Provide an honest rating for your communication skills. Tell your interviewer a story from your professional past that highlights your ability to communicate effectively.

Remember to demonstrate humility in your response. A rating of 10 in communication should be a rare response reserved for candidates with formal training in communication or similar experience.

"I spent a lot of time researching the company prior to my interview. I read through all of the global sustainability pages and the annual report. For example, I was impressed with BAE Systems' commitment to the use of a responsible supply chain. My role will be focused on logistics, so this is an area that is important to me. I also appreciate the green measures BAE Systems has made to improve the sustainability of their offices. BAE Systems has implemented several of the features that are important to me when selecting a place to live, so it is nice to know those same features would be available in the workplace."

If hired, I would love the opportunity to give back to LEAP as it had a profound impact on my career and decision to interview for a full-time position here at BAE Systems."

As a recent finance graduate, I was most impressed with the market update stories for the past two years. A lot of companies have struggled in recent years, and BAE Systems continues to thrive given the diverse portfolio and backlog of orders to be filled. I appreciate companies with a healthy financial outlook, and BAE Systems exceeds my expectations in that area."

I also proved that I am motivated and willing to put in extra effort as needed. I have provided the contact information for my manager there. She is willing to speak to my ability to add value while I come up to speed on new concepts. I feel I would be able to perform similarly here at BAE Systems."

Finding a responsible balance in the use of AI was a focus area of my post-grad work and I am looking forward to the opportunity to help define how we use technology to improve the safety and wellbeing of the human race."

"There have been endless breakthroughs in our industry; however, the one that excited me the most was the Falcon 9 Full Thrust. It's amazing to me that a partially-reusable launch system is in existence."

"The biggest recent breakthrough in our industry, in my opinion, is less of a single technological or manufacturing breakthrough and more of a convergence of several fields. For example, the use of blockchain technology typically applied to cryptocurrency trading has had a significant impact on aerospace security and the ability to trade efficiently. "Absolutely. I have learned that there are several leadership styles and you do not have to be in an official leadership role to lead. Every person on a team can be a leader. For example, cheerleading is a leadership skill. I am great at acknowledging the accomplishments of my teammates in my current role, and I provide encouragement and support during difficult times."
