"Working with diverse stakeholders who have different and sometimes conflicting needs can be challenging. I believe the best way to accomplish this is to engage the stakeholders early in the process. I spend a great deal of time listening to what they believe they need and discussing how we can achieve this using IT resources. Once the project is underway, I frequently communicate with them, ensuring that we're going in the right direction. If a conflict arises; I will address it to both my management and their management who can arbitrate the issue and get us back on track."

The first thing is making sure to have an accurate stakeholder registry. Then ensuring that all stakeholders or groups of stakeholders have been included in the requirements gathering phase, and making sure to use your communication skills to elicit accurate requirements from them, different people have different ways to express their needs. In my experience, there are also occasions in which an in-depth data analysis reveals some patterns that lead to very popular requirements, in these cases stakeholders don't know consciously what they want. After that, proper prioritization of the requirements is necessary to ensure that maximum value is being delivered. Also, a good communications plan is essential to keep all the stakeholders informed on the progress of the project and to give them the opportunity to share their feedback with you.
