"Benchmarking is the process of setting a standard for performance. An organization's processes, policies, programs, and other operational parameters are constantly measured against the company's benchmarks. Benchmarks provide the IT business team with an assessment of how well IT projects are performing and whether they are exceeding or underperforming against the organization's standards. Benchmarks can also be set for an entire industry, giving the management team an idea of how the company is performing against its competitors."

Good answer! You clearly explain how useful benchmarking can be for IT business analysts. Perhaps personalize your answer a bit by providing an example or two of how you have used benchmarking in the past.
Anonymous Answer
The use of benchmarking is key to measuring success when working on a solution. For example, a car company can be developing a fuel-efficient engine that makes about 30 mpg while the industry benchmark for engines of similar displacements is 45 mpg. On the same token, you could be developing an IT solution with an expected ROI of 10% while your company's internal projects have an average ROI of 17%. I always strive to ensure that my projects deliver high value with the least effort that's why the capacity to compare your solution with industry or internal company benchmarks is very important to make efficient use of the available resources.
