      The Goal

Hiring authorities commonly use this question as an icebreaker to start the interview. The way you answer this question can help determine the flow of your discussion or even the direction your interviewer takes with subsequent interview questions. The goal of your response is to give the interviewer a glimpse into who you are as it relates to the job opportunity. You also want to spotlight the factors that make you the best candidate for the role.

Written by Rachelle Enns on January 8th, 2022

      What to Avoid

Avoid giving overly personal statements. When you respond, you can add a splash of personal information; however, choose something like, 'I love to read science fiction books,' vs. 'I was recently diagnosed with...'

Also, avoid discussing factors unrelated to your career, like where you were born or your relationship status. Instead, keep your answer as work-relevant as possible. You can discuss competitive sports, educational achievements, or volunteer work if you are new to your career.

      Pro Tip

An interviewer may not always ask, 'Tell me about yourself' using this exact wording. Other ways your interviewer may ask this question:

      - Tell me about your career journey.
      - Talk to me about your career.
      - Walk me through your professional background.

Be prepared to encounter multiple variations of this common interview question.

      How to Answer

Many interviews begin with the question, 'Tell me about yourself.' This question can turn any well-prepared candidate inside out because it's open-ended. You might wonder where to begin and where to end! The 'Past, Present, Future' framework is beneficial for forming an answer to this common interview question.

      1) Past: Provide a brief overview of your career journey.
      2) Present: Discuss your current career situation as it relates to the job opportunity.
      3) Future: Talk about your career aspirations and how this future opportunity fits.

When you frame your response using the Past, Present, Future method, it helps you keep your thoughts on track, allowing you to deliver a well-organized answer with impact. If it feels more natural, you can also frame your answer as Present, Past, Future.

Good start. You can elaborate by talking about three things. First, you can explain your present employment situation. Second, you can shift to the past to give a brief overview of career highlights, achievements, and professional interests as a story. The interviewer has seen your resume; connect the dots. Briefly explain when you discovered interests, why you chose the field, why you left jobs, or what you've learned. Finally, you can say something about the future, like why you're excited about the job.

"I started volunteering at a local public library and a public recreation center for a few months. I believe that being generous in servicing people is the right thing. I currently work at a wholesale market and have provided customer service for general products for over five years. This role has helped me understand the prospective customers in the market and solve their problems to meet their expectations. Now, I am learning new skills in software development to solve problems in the supply chain and broaden the perspective of customers' needs regarding online transaction processing and electronic data interchange. Your software sales development position seems to have a similar objective to online transaction processing and supply chain management."

"I have worked in the logistics industry for over fifteen years, focused on supporting Sales Department and maintaining customer relationships.

My first role was as an international agent to help the sales team to improve their productivity by sourcing the shipping costs with carriers, contacting customers to route their international shipment from pick up to delivery via air/ocean/import/ export, and ensuring order satisfaction and promoting customer satisfaction.

Later, I worked for an air carrier as a sales manager and led a team to acquire the market. I monitored sales and operations daily, managed costs as assigned budget, and worked on improving a process/workflow to maximize revenue based on fleets' capacities.

Currently, I am the billing and accounts receivable for JIT transportation. My primary responsibilities include

      • Handling office calls, emails, and messages regarding our services offering quotes, and updating the shipment status.

      • Ensuring orders are processed according to customer requirements,

      • Be responsible for managing client profiles and updating database and customer records.

      • Invoicing clients, processing payments, and remaindering customers the payment

      • Investigate and solve questions and problems regarding clients' accounts, determine the cause of the problem, and select and explain the best solution to solve the problem.

      • Recommend potential solutions to management to improve our service and products.

Over the past few months, I have discovered my excitement for the technology industry, where I see significant opportunities.

I wish to expand my business development experiences across sectors, so I am interested in growing my career with your company.

With my last many years in the logistics industry, I have gained many skills that align very well with the qualities your company seeks for this opportunity. And I'm ready to step into the next phase of my career and would be happy to apply these skills to your company."

Awesome! Your response is definitely very thorough, which is great. Just make sure not to bore the interviewer by listing all your current job responsibilities like they're in a job ad. Keep your response informative but also personal and friendly - like you're telling a story about your work background. You've done an excellent job of explaining why this company interests you. Great job!

"I am currently a physician assistant working in the hospitals as well as in primary care clinics and emergency room. I see myself as someone that wants to learn something new about myself every single day and something that can advance myself and my career. I have enjoyed doing what I do since becoming a physician assistant, but for me, it is a building block to advance myself and to become a physician in the united states. Having worked independently for many years now, I felt I am very prepared to take the challenges of becoming a physician in the US.

After residency, I'm hoping to continue my quest to provide medical care in missions, rural communities and medically underserved areas in the United States."

This is a good start! Your passion comes across as highly genuine, and it's apparent that you know yourself well. I like to coach the 'Past, Present, Future' model for answering this commonly asked interview question:

Past: Provide a brief overview of your career journey.

Present: Discuss your current career situation as it relates to the job opportunity.

Future: Talk about your career aspirations and how this future opportunity is a fit.

Try adding in something about yourself that the interviewer would not know about you from your resume. This question is also an opportunity to make yourself memorable.

"I would say that I am both analytical and creative, having a career in real estate, and now in finance. In my spare time, I enjoy advancing my education by reading industry-related books and articles. I am so education-focused that I made a bold career pivot after the real estate market crashed, completing my Finance degree and starting my career over again."

"I would say that I am both analytical and creative. I'm extroverted at times, but there are also times when I like alone time to focus on what needs to be done.

I was a homemaker for many years. I come into the workforce with many years of practical experience. However, I also have strong educational credentials. I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate.

I understand the fundamentals of Business Administration and my law degree taught me how to analyze and think critically."
