      What You Need to Know

Think of when you functioned as a role model to others. This can include coaching and developing others on your team, or training them on new skills. If you haven't taken on a direct leadership role, share how you influenced others in your everyday work life. Setting the work pace, leading by example, being a resource and boosting morale all counts. Just consider the qualities of a leader you admire. Think about how you listen to the needs of others and how you are sensitive to the feelings of others when dealing with conflict. Try to give at least one example of your leadership ability.

"In my working life with Ford, I have had a few occasions where I have had an influence on others, especially younger apprentices with near no experience of work-life, and serious work situations when up against a deadline. Being an employee with near 20 years of experience, I have regularly had apprentices work with me, I enjoy the role of showing them the role, teaching them about how to do our job, follow procedures, what to do when up against a problem, I would always listen to there concerns and issues, I am a sensitive person and would always put a colleague who's in need of help first and foremost. I feel I have a great work ethic and work well under pressure, I feel this has a good effect on people who have worked with me, I was taught these important characteristics and I hope to pass these on, people would continue these great traditions I've learned in growing up with the company from a boy to a man. For example, I can recall where I lead a team to do some voluntary work for a local museum (nonprofit organization). I was tasked with leading my colleagues, delegating tasks, and keeping everyone motivated to complete our work. I started my day by setting out the objectives for us all to complete. We had a strict deadline of 2 days of work and had to complete paint prep work on day one for it to be completed on the final day. I managed the situation by breaking the group up into sections and making sure everyone had a part to play, including myself. I managed with great success and we finished in good time on day two, we had lots of time left that we were able to have a tidy up and do a few other jobs for the museum."
