When faced with high pressure decision making, which requires an immediate response to a given situation, there's an old expression that applies; A good plan today is better than a better plan tomorrow. This applies greater pressure to a high-pressure situation, as making an immediate decision is something of a calculated risk. Therefore, the interviewer wants to know if you are a risk taker or risk-averse. If you are a risk-taker, they want to know how you approach evaluating risk. Taking a chance on innovation is different from being an obsessive gambler. You can't grow if you're not willing to risk stepping outside of your comfort zone! Provide an example that exhibits sound judgment, and an educated calculated risk, while thinking fast on your feet! Discuss the results of your course of action, what you learned, and how you've grown from your experience.

"I trust my instincts and consider the pros and cons of my options before making a decision. When it comes to decision making, my current supervisor would say that I am thoughtful, perceptive and able to make calculated decisions based on my expertise and knowledge."

I trust myself, and I know that I will find the right way to solve a problem. I also rely on my teammates to assist me if I need help. I also think twice before making most decisions.

Rachelle's Feedback
Leaning on your teammates is a good approach, as is thinking twice before making a decision. If you have an example of when your approach helped you make the right choice under pressure, it would be helpful to add that personalization.

When under pressure I trust my instinct and always weigh up the positive and negative outcomes. I will always think about what's next, what if I do this, will this happen. I would never make a rash decision, I would always pause for a moment to think. If I ever came up against something I wasn't sure about, I would seek help and guidance from another colleague or go above them and speak to someone more senior, such as an engineer in my area. I would always try to do my best in any situation, and never rush with a response. no answer is better than the wrong answer.
