On the job at Fonterra, you may come across times when you are relied upon to make a significant decision without the help of others. To gauge your comfortability and confidence in doing so, your interviewer wants to hear you talk about a time you had to do just this on the job. What they expect is for you to walk through the entire situation, your decision-making process, and the result that came from your decision.

"As you can see from my resume, I've been in marketing for New Zealand's largest seafood producer for over nine years. Last year, we were putting new print advertisements out when a change in brand image was developed quickly. At that point, I was tasked with deciding whether to scrap that month's print ads or work hard to get new ads created and printed with the new branding. I didn't hesitate to take the latter option, because public awareness was key with our new branding. I worked hard to gather a team to create new print ads and get them to our key publications that we advertise in just in time for printing. I had to communicate quickly with key sales staff at the publications to know print dates and deadlines for our work."

"When my manager is not around in my current role, it is up to me to make customer-service-based decisions such as accepting returns and giving refunds or further mark-downs. I am sure to be calculated, keeping excellent customer service delivery top of mind while also noting that the decision cannot be harmful to my company's bottom line. I am skilled at taking a disgruntled customer and turning their refund request into a simple exchange, saving my company a lot of money. These are skills I'm looking forward to bringing to work here at Fonterra."

As you come into your interview at Fonterra, it's important to know that their co-operative business nature and drive to make things happen call for their staff to take the lead when necessary. Try to think of a time when you had to act quickly in making a difficult decision on the job. What you want to highlight in your answer is the decision-making process you utilized, the resources you pulled from, and the communication you used during this process. This will show your interviewer that you would join their team with the ability to make important decisions with ease.
