While this is a realistic scenario, the question relates to an employee who is a no call/no show. I provided a potential answer below. I want to demonstrate how seasoned you are as a manager then things like this arise.
Having been a manager in customer service for many years, I know that turnover is very high. When accepting a manager position, I know that I will be responsible for making scheduling changes (routinely and unexpectedly). I build a lot of rapport with my employees and get to know their schedules and flexibility. I keep a running list in my mind of who can potentially take shifts they are not scheduled for. For instance, students are usually available to pick up evening or weekend shifts, so if I have a no call/no show, I reach out to the people I think could help me with coverage.
