3. Allina Health has one of the most comprehensive electronic health record systems in the nation. Do you have experience working with EHRs?
How to Answer
With advances in technology, the medical field is definitely no exception to technological growth. Electronic Health Records are becoming more and more popular as healthcare providers seek to find better ways to communicate and give more efficient care. Allina utilizes a program called Excellian, based off of the base EPIC program, that Allina has customized for their own use. Talk to your interviewer about your experience working with different EHR's and express that you are proficient in learning new systems.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
Answer Example
"I think that the utilization of Electronic Health Records is great. I can remember a time when we would have to send signed release of information forms to the doctor's office, then wait for them to send the info we needed back, or wait for xray and lab results. With EHRs, things are literally at our fingertips. It makes the wait for patients less and gathering information for us as caregivers much less frustrating. I have worked proficiently on EPIC and Cerner and feel very comfortable in my ability to learn a new EHR with some basic training."

5. Talk about the importance of infection control in your job and describe the measures you take to ensure that you lessen the odds for the spread of infection.
How to Answer
Hospitals and clinics are the place where the sick come to be treated and because of this, infection control is held in the highest regard by Allina. When a patient enters the building, they are touching doors and chairs and potentially spreading sickness through the air as well. If you provide direct patient care, you come in contact with infection and disease on a regular basis. Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Even though I don't work in direct contact with patients, I still take all of the proper protocols when working around the building. I regularly wash my hands and use hand sanitizer around the building because I never know when I would come in contact with potential hazards on the job. If I'm ever not feeling 100% while at work, I also wear a mask to prevent the potential spread of illness."

2nd Answer Example
"Working on a med/surg unit, we often have patients that are being treated for different infectious diseases like varicella, pertussis and flu. When working with these patients, I take extreme caution in my prevention measures. And of course I take all precautions to properly wash and sanitize my hands between patients."

How to Answer

"As a physical therapist, I fully realize that there are things outside of my direct therapy that can impact how each patient becomes healed from their injury. Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018

I approach each patient as a potential future two potential customers under the assumption that if I provide great care, they'll tell one friend who could potentially see us at a later time. Conversely, if I provide poor care, they could potentially tell a friend that would choose not to use our services in the future. Even knowing that Allina is in a large city like St. Paul, the power of word of mouth still remains strong among the community."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"My current employer does great things for the community that I live in and I am so grateful to see that Allina does some of the same things to help make their communities better as well. During my time with my current employer, I've been a part of food drives, clothing drives, free flu shot clinics and homeless shelter volunteering as part of my job. Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Having worked in a department in the past where the leader wasn't supportive of staff and threw people under the bus to benefit themselves, it sadly took me a few years to realize that this was a culture that was promoted from the very top of the organizations. Since working there, I have since been with an employer where management supported the growth and production of employees and this was a very encouraging workplace that I thrived in. In talking to a few employees at Allina, it is easy to see that this same type of support is offered here and I know I would thrive here."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"My biggest dislike is working in a toxic environment and I have one such situation in my career. Even on a large team, one bad cog can spoil the whole machine and this was so true on a team I worked with in the past. Negativity has a way of spreading like wildfire, even if unintentionally, and that was the case with just one negatively toxic person. For me to thrive, I want to be a part of a cohesive team that works well together and gets along personally. What can you tell me about the current team here that I'd potentially be joining?"

10. Think about a difficult boss, professor or coworker. What made him or her difficult? How did you successfully interact with this person?
How to Answer
Allina is a very large organization that employs many people and the chances of an employee seeing eye to eye with every person is slim. Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize there are some folks out there who are quite difficult to please. Think about that one person at work who is seen as hard to please. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and what their relationship was with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone and be sure to end your response on a positive note.

1st Answer Example
"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he would walk into the facility, employees would quietly announce that he was in the building, so that everyone could be prepared for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do a lot of good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"In my previous position, I did have a coworker who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated coworker created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks when it came to group projects. It didn't take much time before our department head noticed this particular individual was slacking. I feel like, in most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Last year working a night shift in the emergency department, I was attending to a young woman that had been brought in after a bad car accident that had a sever injury to her leg. From the moment she was brought in, she was screaming that she didn't have health insurance due to a recent change in jobs and that she just wanted to go home. Knowing that she had several fractures to her leg, I calmly tried to explain the extent of her injuries to her and at that point she became very angry with myself and the physician. I took the extra measure of explaining to her that depending on the investigation of the car accident, coverage for her costs of care have a chance to be covered by the auto insurer. On top of that, I assured her that our hospital had a financial aid department she could speak with later after she was stabilized and discharged. With that being said, her anger slowed down and she apologized as we prepared her for surgery."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Working in a family medicine clinic setting, I have been trained to spot the signs of drug seekers. A few months ago, a patient came in and upon my initial consult and hearing him start asking about getting Oxy prescribed before even talking about symptoms her was feeling, I knew he was most likely seeking drugs for personal purposes. Remaining focused, I asked him to walk me through why he had come to see us. Hesitating, he said he had extreme upper shoulder pain from a work injury a few years back and he was in need of pain medication. I let him know that we would have to request his medical records as he was a new patient at our clinic and with that said, he became very angry and said I needed to get the doctor to write him the prescription immediately. After calmly explaining once again that he would need to complete a release form so we could request his records, he shouted a few expletives and stormed out of the exam room and out of the clinic. In these instances, we have specific reporting protocol to follow and I did that. While this wasn't a great outcome per se, I was proud of the way that my training prepared me to stay calm in a situation like that."

13. If you were the person responsible for hiring new employees, what qualities would you be looking for during the interview? Do you feel that you display those qualities yourself?
How to Answer
There is more than one reason for asking this question. First, the interviewer wants to know what qualities you think are important to perform this job. Second, and most importantly, your answer will tell the interviewer if you hold yourself to the same standard as you do others. If you want to see certain characteristics in your peers, you should be able to tell the interviewer with confidence that you possess those traits, as well. This question is one that interviewers often use to distinguish sincerity on the part of the candidate.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I believe that honesty is important no matter what job title a person holds. I have found that being honest with people creates an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect. Those qualities, I feel, are essential when building rapport with patients and co-workers."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I feel that being willing to be accountable to yourself and your peers is an essential quality of healthcare providers. It is often easy to hold others accountable while allowing ourselves a little room to get out of a situation that may be uncomfortable. I believe if we sho ourselves to the same standard of expectation as we do others."

14. Our Patient and Family Partnership Program offers opportunities for patients or family members to become part of the organization by giving feedback regarding experiences and suggestions on improving care. What are your thoughts on this program?
How to Answer
Involving patients in their own care has been a practice for many years. However, as part of a holistic approach, including family members is now more common. Healthcare organizations such as Allina Health Systems go a step further by involving former patients and/or their family members in the Patient and Family Partnership Program. This program consists of an advisory council, focus groups, virtual feedback groups and committee panels to help improve the quality of care they offer. Share your thoughts on this program with the interviewer. Remember, if a facility already has a program in place, find a way to compliment the efforts of the organization during your interview. (Only offer ideas of how to change a program once you are hired and included in the plan. To do so without prompting, pre-employment, could have a detrimental effect on your employment opportunity.)
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"That is a fantastic approach to getting patients and family involved! I have met people who wanted to have their voice heard when it comes to healthcare issues, but who were not interested in a healthcare career. I think this is a great way to allow some of those people to speak up and have their opinions heard and to have a chance at making changes happen."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I didn't realize Allina Health Systems had a program like this in place, but I can see where it could give some insight to the directors from a layperson's point of view. I think we all should be advocates for our patients, not just hospital staff, but family members alike. Many times family members feel like they are 'on the outside looking in' when it comes to their loved one's care. I think a program like this could give those loved ones a feeling of being involved."

15. Being a healthcare provider is rewarding, but can also be very stressful at times. Can you share a situation that was difficult for you and how you worked through it?
How to Answer
The interviewer recognizes that, while being a healthcare provider has its benefits, it can often be trying at times. This question gives you the chance to show how your vulnerability meets your strengths. Having balance between the two is a sought-after characteristic of healthcare providers. Being willing to open up to the interviewer about a situation that was emotional for you and how you were able to cope will show him what can be expected of you when you are faced with a difficult situation in the future.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I agree that being a healthcare provider has its stressful situations. One case that I will never forget occurred when I worked pediatrics. We had a four year old child that was admitted due to having seizures. After further testing, it was discovered that the child had a brain tumor. The tumor was very advanced and she lost her life because of it. That time was very emotional for everyone on the care team. Fortunately, we had a good team leader who gave us an opportunity to talk with her and one another about the overwhelming grief that we felt. I have found that talking through emotions is a great way to work through any unresolved grief."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I could probably think of several stressful situations throughout my career. I suppose that's to be expected when you are caring for others, trying to make people comfortable, trying to keep tension resolved, all of that can be stressful. One of the most stressful situations for me, and one I will never forget, happened when one of our team members was in a car accident on the way to work. She was hit by a drunk driver and both she and the driver of the other car were brought to the emergency room where I was working. As a team, we all were in shock. As her friends, we were angry. We all did what we knew was right, though, and took care of her and the driver of the other car. Having to try and save someone who was the cause of such a tragedy was very trying. We made it through, though. Both she and the other driver survived and we all moved on. It was definitely a test of our compassion toward others."

16. Do you prefer to work in a team based position or individually?
How to Answer
In which situation are you the happiest and most productive? Talk to the interviewer about your preference when it comes to teamwork or working individually. Be sure to avoid pigeonholing yourself into one particular scenario (IE: I only like to work by myself). You may work well without the need for much management or direction, or perhaps you are better driven in a collaborative and team led environment. Either way, be honest with the interviewer about your preferences without leaning negatively, either way.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Whether I am doing an independent project or working in a team environment, I always give my best. I enjoy the camaraderie of working in a team but I can be successful working autonomously as well."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Being a people person, I really do thrive and produce well in a team based environment. I am a natural leader and love helping others work effectively and efficiently as well as enjoying bouncing ideas off of others so I can learn as well. With that said, my knowledge base of the jog make me effective working on my own as well. If I were to be hired, you will quickly find that I am able to work independently with little supervision."

17. Talk about a time when you used compassion to help ease a patient that was under stress or some negative emotions?
How to Answer
Showing compassion to patients is one of the top traits that makes a person successful in the healthcare industry. While often difficult to express in words, your interviewer will be looking to hear that you are a compassionate and caring person at heart. Allina prides itself on creating a compassionate environment and your potential role is a big part of that. Using a specific example from your work history, talk about how you made the visit of a patient better because you truly cared.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"A couple of years ago, we had a young man come our unit following a car accident that had broken both of his legs and bruised several ribs. As the days passed under our care, I noticed that he hadn't had any visitors and wasn't responding much to conversation. One morning, I began our conversation by opening up about myself and asking about his job and family. He cautiously told me that he had relocated to the area for his job as a pipe fitter and was an only child that was far away from his elderly parents. Seeing the pain in his eyes being away from his family at such a trying time, I ensured that any extra time I had was spent with this patient because I could see that he was missing his parents badly and they were unable to make the trip to see him. After his discharge, he sent our nursing staff an awesome thank you card for his care and that was all I needed to know a job was well done."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"In my career, I have showed compassion to my patients by actively listening to all that they have to say and showing empathy for the situation that they're in. Recently, we had a woman on our unit that was very distraught to be hospitalized because of a staph infection. Her biggest worries were missing out on work and the activities of her children. I ensured that I listed to all of her concerns. In turn, I assured her that her infection was indeed serious and that her physician would be documenting her illness for her employer to qualify for FMLA leave. I think that by me listening and reasoning the need for care with her put her at great ease, which ultimately helped her heal quicker."

18. Allina Health Systems employs almost 30,000 people. A disagreement can be expected with such a large number of people at times. Can you think of a time you had a disagreement with a co-worker and, if so, how did you resolve it?
How to Answer
Any time you work with someone else, there is a chance of having a disagreement about something at one time or another. The interviewer knows this. It's human nature for people to have their own opinions. What is important to the interviewer in this question is whether or not you are willing to compromise and work through difficult situations with your co-workers. Being unwilling to compromise or find alternative solutions to a dispute can affect everyone on the team, even if it is indirectly. Sharing a personal experience is OK, but do not embellish it to 'be the hero.'
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I believe if we think about it, each of us could remember at least one disagreement with a friend or co-worker. Although I consider myself to be pretty easy-going, I am also very passionate about my patients and the care that they receive. I have been aware of disagreements between other co-workers, but really like to think of myself as more of a peacekeeper. I feel like professional people should be able to discuss things logically and come to an agreement that is satisfactory for everyone involved."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I understand that disagreements occur; that is just part of working with people who have different thoughts and beliefs. However, I have to say, I really try to be the 'voice of reason' when I feel there may be a tense situation or conflict. Disagreements do not have to turn into arguments. If patient care is our main focus, as it should be, I believe working toward conflict resolution should be each of our goal."

19. Everyone you meet has an individual personality. What is something you would like people who are meeting you to know about your personality?

The interviewer is looking for ques as to what character you may bring to the table, so to speak. Answer Example
"In my most recent position we had a consistent problem with employees showing up late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Also, for every month with zero sick days, a bonus was added. In the end, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. The bonus' cost us less money, in the end than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. Every clinic I've ever worked in has its way of communicating and recording facts, so I put time and attention into using the system the people around me are using. That way its easier to transition care and the patient has all their info in the same place. My notebook saves me when I'm swamped, but I try to be efficient and put info directly into the chart when I can."

If ever brought it to the attention of the physician staff, they would deflect the concern because she was a really great nurse that had worked there for a long time. I found it best to let the experienced nurse know when I was feeling bullied and disrespected. She would often turn a shoulder, but over time I noticed that she didn't act that around me anymore. As I moved on from that job and became more experienced, I've taken the role of mentor to the new nurses that I work with and lead by example in showing them how to treat people with dignity and respect."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"A disrespectful work environment is hard to be productive in and very hard on a person's emotions. With one of my past employers, our departments culture was a very negative one and it stemmed directly from the director of our department. She would belittle employees in front of other staff, play favorites and allow poor work performance to slide under the table. When other good employees saw this happen, some fell into the trap of slacking in their work. I continually reminded myself to stay focused on my job and I eventually chose to move on from the organization. To this day now as a leader, I promote mutual respect in my department through teamwork and collaboration and this helps positively reflect respect on our patients."

1st Answer Example
"On a busy day in my clinic, I see anywhere between 20 to 30 patients per day. With each patient comes the demand to document and follow-up as needed if necessary. With direct patient care being a top priority, I begin each morning by printing the patient schedule and planning on catching up in our EMR on any downtime. During patient visits, I utilize both my mobile device and a notepad to jot notes down if I'm unable to document immediately following the patient visit. I've tried to rely solely on memory in the past and that is not a mistake that I would make again."

2nd Answer Example
"Working in patient safety for a large healthcare organization, I have juggled multiple projects at one time throughout my entire career and I feel like I've pretty much made an art form out of balancing many things at once. I break each project down into sections: brainstorming, planning, execution and finalization and each section has prioritized due dates. Utilizing my Outlook calendar and tasks, I prioritize all of my work on a daily basis based on due dates. For most of my projects, I work closely with others so I need to remain flexible as well to drop what I'm doing at a moments notice to pick up on another project."

29. Our pharmacy volunteers recently packed overdose kits of Narcan to be distributed to health systems within the community as an effort to assist with the opiod crisis in our state. Do you have any experience working with drug addiction?
How to Answer
The topic of drug addiction can make someone who is not expecting to discuss it feel they have to be on the defensive. The interviewer is not asking this question to see if you have ever abused drugs, but rather to see if you have experienced the effects of drug abuse. When someone is affected either personally, or through someone they know, it tends to give a deeper sense of understanding what it takes to overcome these addictions. Be honest. There is no wrong answer. If you have never used or been around someone who has used drugs, that's fine. If you have, that's ok, too. This is a perfect time to share your feelings regarding an epidemic that is sweeping across our nation.

"I have never abused drugs of any type. I have a family member who was addicted to pain medicine after a bad car accident. I saw the effects that the addiction had not only on him, but his family, as well. It took a long time to break that addiction. I love the idea of Allina Health participating in efforts like this!"
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 5th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I'm glad you brought this subject up because I always like to share my personal experience with prospective employers. When I was 17, I was introduced to meth. I used it twice and the second time I almost died. After I was treated in the hospital for the emergency situation, I entered a rehabilitation facility and have never touched anything again. I have now been free from that for over 15 years. Seeing Allina Health Systems so involved in trying to rescue those who are affected by drug abuse only deepens my desire to want to work here."

30. In the healthcare services industry there are many emotions in a day. Have your emotions ever been in the way of your productivity?
How to Answer
Working in a patient care setting can provoke feelings that span the entire spectrum of human emotion and this is completely normal for any person. For this question, your interviewers ill really be dialed in on how you personally handle your emotions when things get tough in this job. Be sure to express that you do feel emotions when on the job but have found healthy and productive ways to handle your emotions. Using a specific example of a time you had to handle sadness, fear or another emotion will go a long way with your interviewer.
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"Throughout my career, I have worked as a paramedic and a registered nurse and both positions have evoked feelings of sadness at times. The best advice that I received early in my career was to remain focused on the task at hand and rely on my patient care skills when facing emotional situations. This advice came in very handy as a paramedic when we were dispatched to a farming accident involving a man that I graduated from high school with. In providing healthcare in my home town, I knew the day would come when I would have to care for someone I knew but all of the mental preparation didn't prepare me for when it actually happened. As we approached the farm, I knew that I would be seeing my old friend in a bad situation. As I approached the scene, I remained focused on my work while still putting the man at ease with him recognizing me immediately. By remaining focused, we were able to stabilize the bleeding from his arm and transport him to the emergency room."
Written by Ryan Brunner on October 4th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"This is a great question. I think the right answer is, 'of course, but not for long'! We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you have to give someone a cancer diagnosis. Its professional to take a few minutes after an encounter like that and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story, its the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."
