1. Would you say you are a sociable person?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Since Aldi is a customer-based organization, a great deal of social interaction is required for most positions. Discuss your ability to work with others, engage customers, and build relationships with people. If you've previously worked in retail or customer service, talk about what you like and what excites you to come to work every day. Be sure to describe qualities you possess that would help you succeed in this role (IE, energetic, engaging, friendly, personable, outgoing, upbeat, etc.).
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"Absolutely! I recharge by spending time with others. In my group of friends, I am the one to organize get-togethers and plan outings. At my school, I often come up with fun team-building events and fundraisers. I can make conversation with nearly every stranger I meet."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I have a passion for working with others and get along well with older adults and children alike. I am an extrovert and am extremely outgoing and upbeat. I love to help others, whether that be locating an item in the store or carrying groceries to their car for them."

2. We have had concerns with employee theft recently. What would you do if you caught an employee or co-worker stealing?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question allows the interviewer to discover more about your character. It's not uncommon for ethical dilemmas in the workplace to come up from time to time, so speak openly about any relevant experiences you've had dealing with this type of situation. Think carefully about your answer, as it will leave a strong impression. Demonstrate your ability to follow a company policy for this type of issue and your commitment to honesty, integrity, and loyalty to Aldi. If you don't have any work-related examples, consider a time in your personal life when you "did the right thing."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"I have never run into this exact issue before, but I had a similar situation in college where a student often cheated on exams. This was unfair to those students studying and working hard to earn good grades, and it was against my school's policy, so I did report it to my professor. If I caught a co-worker stealing, I would follow the same process and report it to my manager immediately. I assume Aldi has an internal policy addressing this matter, so I would be sure to familiarize myself with it so I would know what to do in this circumstance."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"If I caught an employee stealing, I would report the incident immediately. As a previous manager, I understand the value of employee honesty and the damage that this could cause for the company. I know every company is different, so I would familiarize myself with the Aldi disciplinary process to address this issue as well."

3. What would you do if a coworker asked you to help them steal?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Since Aldi is a retail store, theft by customers and employees is always a concern. The interviewer wants to hear that you are honest and ethical and to discover how you would handle this situation. Assure the interviewer that you would not participate in this type of behavior and illegal activity and would report it immediately. If this situation has happened to you before, use that as an example and explain how you handled the situation.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"I am sure that you have an internal policy for employee theft so I can assure you that I would follow the required steps to report the theft. I am a trustworthy person with a strong track record of honesty with my previous employers and would never engage in this type of behavior."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I would never help a coworker steal anything, whether that was food, money, or otherwise. I would tell the employee that it's illegal and would tell them not to steal either. I would report this to my manager or HR immediately."

4. Do you prefer working in a team environment or alone?
What You Need to Know
Aldi is very much a team environment but may require you to complete some tasks individually. Discuss what you like about working as a team and what you like about working alone. Try to keep your answer positive and avoid speaking negatively about one or the other.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"Most of my recent work experience has been independently focused so I would welcome the support of working in a team environment. I have a great deal of experience in a team environment from working on group projects in University and enjoy working with diverse groups of people."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I am an extrovert, so I enjoy working with others to achieve common goals. I find it easy to make small talk with others and work alongside people regularly. I can also thrive working alone, whether that's a project like stocking shelves, or cleaning up the store after hours, I'm happy to work in either setting."

5. Have you ever called off from work before?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Aldi relies on employees to be at work so that shelves remain stocked and cash registers are occupied to check customers out. The interviewer wants to know that you are a reliable person and they will not have to constantly find coverage for your shifts. Discuss your commitment to the company and speak to times you've had to call out of work in the past. If you don't have work experience, think about times you've missed class, internships, or other volunteer responsibilities. No matter the situation, demonstrate that you handle these types of situations with professionalism.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"Since this is my first job, I do not have prior work history to share with you. I have held responsibilities in a volunteer capacity in the past and also attended school full-time, and I took those commitments seriously. I rarely missed class, and if I did, it was once or twice a year because I was not feeling well. In my volunteer role, I understood that anytime I would miss an event or project, it created a heavy burden for others, so I did not call out from my responsibilities."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I have called off from work twice in the last year, but only when I was very ill and with a doctor's note. If I am not feeling well, I notify my manager with as much advanced notice as possible so that my shift can be covered. I like to work, and need to earn a living, so rest assured that I will be at work on time and when expected."

6. What do you know about ALDI?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Be sure to visit the company's website to learn a few critical things about the company such as its history, mission, vision, and current events. If possible, visit a local store so you can familiarize yourself as well.
Start off by sharing that you know ALDI is all about saving families money. You might share that ALDI uses quarters to keep carts neatly in front of the store saving labor costs. You might share that ALDI does not offer shopping bags for free to save costs. You might share that ALDI is only open during favorite shopping hours to keep labor costs down. You might share that ALDI has terrific quality in-season produce offered at low prices featuring their 'Pick of the Week' options. Be prepared to list a couple of facts that you know about ALDI when the interviewer asks!
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"I grew up shopping with my mother at Aldi, so I'm very familiar with the store size, structure, products, and customer processes. From a higher level, I know Aldi has been awarded the Overall Energy Achievement Award, the top award for recognition of its approach to using sustainable energy, energy reduction, and reducing carbon emissions. I think the Aldi mission is an incredible one."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I know that Aldi was first started in Germany by two brothers, in the 1940's. It is now one of the largest discount supermarkets, boasting over 10,000 locations across various countries. What I appreciate most about Aldi are the cost-saving efforts your organization takes to pass the savings along to your loyal customers. I look forward to joining such a socially conscious organization."

7. Why do you want to work for ALDI?
How to Answer
It is important to be forthright and honest with your answers, and everyone may have their own unique reasons for preferring one employer over another. But consider how you might help your interviewer as well when answering this question. Part of the recruiter's job is to determine which of their talent acquisition efforts had the most impact. So examine all the employment offerings they advertise online, and which of those appeal to you most, and list those among your reasons for deciding to pursue this opportunity.
Written by Kevin Downey on March 21st, 2024
What to Avoid
Avoid offering reasons that have little to do with them, their culture, or the opportunities this presents. Such as wanting to work at a location that is close to home, getting a discount on groceries, or starting off at a more desirable pay rate. This will suggest you are just trying to find any job anywhere, and might up and quit the second a better opportunity comes along.

What You Need to Know
Here are a few of the value propositions ALDI has posted on their careers site, with the aim of recruiting their target talent: "The ALDI story is one that spans over a century. Joining the ALDI team can be your first step toward a successful, long-term career. One that offers best-in-class benefits that focus on your health and wellness, comprehensive training that prioritizes your success, and a team that's all about helping you shine -- how you want. We've been recognized time and again for rewarding careers -- and our high-quality products. With so many locations, you don't have to look far to find a new opportunity to start your next chapter. We pride ourselves on placing a high value on work-life balance! Our core operating hours are 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. local time Monday through Friday. Employees come to work extremely focused because once their shift is complete, they are able to go home, rest, recharge, and get ready for the following work day."
Written by Kevin Downey on March 21st, 2024
Experienced Example
"I worked for Acme Fresh Market for a few years, but I didn't quite feel like the culture there was in line with my personality. I am very bubbly and happy-go-lucky, and the work culture at my store was more so a keep-your-head-down and get the job done vibe. So, I wanted to work somewhere I could have more fun interacting with the customers, and ALDI stores definitely have that atmosphere. I love the simplicity of how the shelves are stocked, and the simpler model of how these stores operate. In fact, ALDI and Trader Joe's are my two favorite stores to shop at, and they're owned by the same family. So, I figured, why not try to work where I like to shop, where I am a loyal customer who can support a great brand?"

8. Where do you see yourself one year from now?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to understand your ambitions and where you hope to be in a year. They are trying to determine if you will be at Aldi for a short period of time, or if you're committed to something long term. If you are a student, tell the interviewer that you plan to stay at Aldi through graduation, and then share what career or further education you hope to be pursuing after graduation. If Aldi offers jobs in your field, such as management, be sure to mention that you would be open to considering a career in your area at Aldi if one is available upon graduating.
If you are not a student, discuss your desire to maintain stable employment and grow with the company. You may even mention that you hope to have received a promotion by the one-year mark.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"I currently have two years left of school, so in one year, I plan to be on the same education track and working full-time. I want to maintain stability in my life, so if offered the job, I would plan to keep my position for as long as possible, hopefully even growing into a supervisor role in the next year or two!"
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"My twelve-month plan is to join your organization and earn my way into a floor manager position. I have a great deal of experience with team management, customer dispute, and inventory. I believe you will see me well-suited for a management role in a short amount of time."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The Aldi website makes clear its mission and values. Be familiar with their pillars (quality, affordability, sustainability), and communicate your strengths in these areas. Be sure to review the job description closely and take this opportunity to point out where you meet the minimum and preferred qualifications for the position. A mix of your personality and insight into your background and experience is ideal.

19. What makes our stores unique compared to other food markets?
What You Need to Know
Aldi is unique in a variety of ways! Do some research on the company website, visit a local store, and be sure to read customer and employee reviews online. Consider discussing the following aspects: they are smaller in size than traditional stores, they do not provide grocery bags, checkout lanes are minimal, a quarter is required to use a cart, they have unique stores hours to keep costs down, prices are noticeably lower than bigger stores, etc. Add your personal opinions about what makes the store and the shopping experience at Aldi unique!
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"Aldi is vocal about their core value to be responsible in reducing their environmental footprint. I read that Aldi was recently ranked as the No. 1 most sustainable grocery retailer among seven of the most popular U.S. chain stores by Brightly.eco. I know the company has made great strides in creating reusable product packaging, has eliminated the use of plastic bags in stores, and has created sustainable product lines. Aldi is definitely an industry leader when it comes to sustainability."
Written by Jaymie Payne on October 27th, 2022
Experienced Example
"I know Aldi stores tend to be smaller than traditional stores like Walmart or Whole Foods. I also know Aldi is focused on simplicity to keep costs down. For example, instead of having employees go to the parking lot and bring carts in regularly, customers are asked to put a quarter in the slot in the cart, then when the customer returns it to the rack, they get their quarter back. Additionally, the company does not use plastic bags in the check-out process; rather, customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags to carry their groceries out."

Customer Service
20. Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond for customer service.
What You Need to Know
Aldi's survival depends in part on customer satisfaction. This question gives you an opportunity to speak to your work ethic and commitment to the team and to customers and provides insight into whether you are someone who does the bare minimum or if you are willing to put forth some extra effort when needed.
Talking about a time when you calmed an upset customer can be an excellent example for this question. Be ready to talk about the time you went above and beyond with handling a customer complaint. Explain how you listened to every word the customer had to say. Next, describe how you apologized to the customer with a calm voice and sincere heart. Finally, be sure to tell the interviewer what solution you offered the customer. Perhaps you did not charge them for a meal if it was in a restaurant. Maybe you offered a new dish for them to try. Be sure to close with how happy the customer was when they left!
Or, you may approach the question with something you have done during the ordinary course of the day to go above and beyond for your customers. For example, if you work at a grocery store, you might share that you walk the customers out to their car when customer levels allow and assist them with loading the groceries in their vehicle.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"When volunteering for a community event, my job was checking runners in for the 5k race. I greeted each participant that checked in with me warmly while registering them. I went the extra mile to ensure they knew where restrooms were, checkpoints to get water and where maps were of the local area. After the race, I congratulated runners and told them we hoped to see them again next year!"
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"When I was working at Grocery Store ABC, I would always keep my eye out for opportunities to help someone reach an item on the top shelf, find what they needed, and take their groceries out to their car if they seemed to be struggling. My customers always appreciated that extra special touch, and I plan to bring that same level of service to work with me at Aldi."

21. How would you handle an irate customer that has screamed at you for three minutes straight?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Aldi serves millions of customers every year, so a customer will inevitably be unhappy at some point. The interviewer wants to understand how you would handle a challenging situation and how you react under pressure. In your answer, include aspects like customer service skills, critical thinking, patience, communication skills, empathy, and your ability to resolve conflicts. Give a specific example of a time you dealt with an angry customer, and if you've not experienced this, walk the interviewer through how you would handle this scenario.
Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"I would politely ask the customer not to raise their voice at me and to allow me the opportunity to help them. In this type of situation, it's important not to raise your voice back and escalate the situation. If they stopped yelling at me, my first step would be to have them explain the situation to me, so I could better understand the problem and how to solve it. If it were something I could resolve for them at my level, I would do so in the most professional way and apologize for any issues or errors that were our fault. If the issue wasn't something I could solve, I would escalate the issue to my shift manager so they could assist me. If the customer continued to yell, I would remove myself from the situation and immediately get my supervisor or ask security to step in."
Written by Rachelle Enns
Experienced Example
"I once had a customer come into my store yelling about how she had just purchased a pie the day before and it was rotten already. I remained calm and kept my tone pleasant and positive. I apologized for the problem and the inconvenience of having to come back to the store and asked her for her receipt. She did not have it and continued to be upset about the quality of the item and her wasted time having to come back. I again apologized and offered to look the information up in our system for her. I was able to locate her receipt, and we were able to replace her item, and my manager also approved me giving her a discount on another item in the store for her trouble. I was able to de-escalate the situation by being helpful and understanding and not getting emotional in response to her anger."

Written by Rachelle Enns

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer needs to know that they can count on you to be at work at your assigned time every day. Assure the interviewer that you are a punctual person, and you are always a couple of minutes early when arriving at work. Written by Rachelle Enns
Entry Level Example
"In the last year, I have only been late for school once, and it was because I had a flat tire. I take my commitments and responsibilities seriously, so anytime I have a situation where I will be late, I'm sure to notify my professor right away and I would do the same if given the job."

What You Need to Know
The Albrecht family started ALDI in Germany in 1913. The name ALDI was born later in 1962, when they combined their name of Albrecht with the word discount, coming up with ALDI, "We shortened 'Albrecht Discount' to ALDI." In 1976, they opened their first US location in Iowa. They also bought Trader Joe's in 1979. Both grocery chains save costs by operating smaller, more sustainable stores, and pass the everyday savings in costs onto the customer instead of marking up their goods. "We provide great products at the lowest possible prices by focusing on responsibility, consistency and simplicity in everything we do. With our exclusive brands and private label products, customers can expect high quality at a more affordable cost."

How to Prep

Come Prepared -- Research common interview questions and brainstorm your answers. You should also bring questions for your interviewer to show your interest. If able, bring extra copies of your resume and a pen & paper to take notes. With more than 2,300 stores across the U.S., there is bound to be an ALDI store near you! Search for your nearest ALDI store. You can find ALDI USA Careers on the following social media sites: Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Glassdoor and Indeed. Answer Example
"Aldi is owned by the Albrecht family, who also owns Trader Joe's. They have a unique business model where the shelves are stocked with the cases the product is shipped in, rather than elaborately staging each item. Similar to Trader Joe's, the company is owned outright and is a private company as opposed to being encumbered by debt or being publicly traded. One of the major ways the company is able to save money and pass those savings on to their customers is by saving money by having stores with less square footage and next to no backroom or warehouse space. This is achieved by ordering items with a truck-to-shelf mentality, and never taking up precious square footage with costly warehouses, while storing products that rarely get rotated, putting them at risk of expiring."

What You Need to Know
By informing them of where you are in your professional development, they'll have a better understanding of how they can continue to help you grow within their company. ALDI advertises how active they try to be in the training and mentoring of their team members. "This team has your back. There's plenty to do at an ALDI store. That means plenty of ways to learn and grow. With comprehensive training, great benefits and competitive compensation -- you'll be on your way to accomplishing more in your career. Open up new opportunities for your career. See how far you can go with a collaborative team and a job that brings something new each day. Moving up in our stores. Answer Example
"I think one of my weaknesses is that I tend to be kind of timid when it comes to drawing attention to my accomplishments. I work really hard, and typically set the pace for our teams, and help out whenever I can. But I lose sight of how busy my supervisors can be, and how many things they are tracking at any given time. So I shouldn't expect them to notice all of my accomplishments. But, I don't want to seem like a sycophant when drawing attention to my accomplishments either. So this is something that I struggle with. But I received some advice from one mentor recently, and that there is nothing wrong with passing the baton, and informing my leadership of where I left off with my workload. And when I do that, which is expected of me, I will thereby be informing them of how above and beyond my accomplishments were. So that helped with my mental shift. I have improved some in this regard, but it is taking more of an effort than I expected."

They may not always make sense to you, but leadership needs to know that you can get on board with something, even when you may not agree. Perhaps you sought to better understand the "why," or perhaps you provided constructive feedback to leadership.

For example, we were required to submit a post by Thursday and respond to two other students' posts by Saturday. It was difficult for me to have my assignments based on another student because students often submitted initial posts late, causing me to have to readjust my schedule, and I didn't have the ability to work ahead. I provided the feedback in a course survey, but ultimately, I respected the professor's decision and encouraged my classmates to post their assignments on time."

Entry Level Example
"In my final year of college, I had several projects due my final semester and needed to prep for my exams. I was volunteering at my local library a few hours a week at that time, so finding time for everything was challenging. I first sat down and wrote out all my tasks and assignments for the month and used different colored highlighters to rank them by deadline and priority levels. I then wrote out about how many hours each would take and broke the tasks down into smaller, manageable assignments. I also contacted the library and asked if I could have one week off from volunteer duties to prep for my exams, and that freed up some time to really focus. I have developed good habits like having 'device free' time where I put my phone and AirPods to the side to really focus on my tasks."

"My job is fast-paced, and it's not uncommon to have multiple projects with conflicting priority levels. Typically, I plan my week out and create time blocks to ensure I have time to do certain tasks without interruption. The ten of us had regular meetings to brainstorm and divide responsibilities, which included a certain number of outreach and speaking to different area groups. We ended up collecting over 1000 shoeboxes! I think we were successful because we had a passion for the work we were doing, we were organized, we created a plan and strategy, and we regularly communicated, so we knew our collective progress and kept each other motivated!"

"Our latest team goal was to be the most profitable store for January, one of the notoriously slow months of the year. We have fifteen stores, across the USA and ours is one of the smaller locations, so we knew we needed to hustle. We closed out the month, #2 in the company which, although we didn't reach #1, was an amazing feat considering we usually sat in the #8 spot. I believe we were able to make this happen because we all have energetic personalities, we encouraged each other, and remained focused."

Teamwork
39. When was the last time you contributed to a team effort and what was your role?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to hear that you enjoy being a part of a team and that you contribute to the success of the team. Start off by sharing the last time you were a part of the team and describe the setting. Perhaps it was a massive project at work, or maybe it was on a sports team or volunteer group. All of these make great examples! Discuss how you made efforts to contribute to the team and be sure to mention how successful the team was!

Entry Level Example
"I volunteer at the animal shelter on weekends which requires a great amount of teamwork, especially when we have open houses. The public will come and check out the animals and hopefully put in adoption applications. We need to ensure the animals are all clean, happy, and ready to be adopted! This end-goal means we must maintain a positive attitude, making the experience great for those who come in. I will bring this same excitement and positivity to any team-based activity with Aldi."

Experienced Example
"I'm currently a part of a team of five who travel to different stores to conduct full store inventories. We each take an assignment and have deadlines to get them done. My role as an individual contributor is to get my assignment done on time and to escalate any problems or concerns to my supervisor. I take the initiative on my team to check in with others from time to time to see how they're doing and if they fall behind, I try to help them get caught up if I can. I am also an encourager to the team. When someone is frustrated or getting tired, I try to give them a morale boost."
