Question 16 of 40

Do you feel performance should be rewarded over experience?

"I feel that employees should be paid and rewarded based on their performance. A new employee would be greatly motivated by being rewarded for performance, encouraging healthy competition with tenured employees. However, experience must be taken into account, as well. The length and quality of someone's experience can inform an evaluation of a person's expected value to an organization. At the end of the day, though, performance matters because that's the measurable impact we make on people's lives."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

The interviewer wants to gain insight into your perspective on the importance of performance versus experience in the workplace. While experience can bring valuable knowledge and skills to a job, performance determines an employee's success and contribution to the company. Rewarding performance can motivate employees to strive for excellence and drive overall success for the company. However, experience should not be discounted entirely, as it can provide a solid foundation for an employee to build upon and contribute to their performance. Let the interviewer know your views on the question and how you reward employees.

"I believe that experience does not necessarily reflect the success or predict performance. You don't have experience until you have experience, but that doesn't mean that a person will not be successful or perform well in their position."

      Amanda's Feedback

This is a balanced response. The interviewer is trying to explore how you feel about being paid based on your work performance rather than being compensated solely based on years of experience or tenure. If you feel both experience and performance are important considerations, you can strengthen your response by sharing an example of how your past experience has helped you improve your performance.
