This is somewhat similar to 'what influenced you to become a counsellor'. You can cite childhood experiences or probably something you did in college/past job that made you confident about being a counsellor.

"Before I pursued counselling as a profession, I was a part of an organisation that welcomes the freshmen in our school. We'd serve as their guide and they ask us for tips or advice about getting through college. I felt fulfilment in being able to help them, listening to their concerns and guiding them as they overcome their problems. I knew then that my ability to listen and give sound advice would help me in this career."

My early experiences, for example, in high school, showed me that counseling is a good fit for me as I was the one that friends and even acquaintances came to talk to about things going on in their lives. In fact, it still happens today, even while just shopping in the grocery store. More recent educational and professional experiences also make me feel capable of being a counselor-I believe practice makes me proficient.

Stephanie's Feedback

I have the opportunity to counseling students individually and in small groups from grades PreK thru 8th on academic, personal, and social issues. I implemented an SEL program and provided weekly lessons to students in Prek to 8th grade. Facilitate parent-teacher conferences. I conducted educational testing and observations and provide feedback to parents and students. I served as the Homeless liaison and 504 Facilitator. I advocate on behalf of students to ensure they are receiving an equitable education. In addition, I have coordinated pre-registration, scheduled students, and helped them develop academic plans.

Cindy's Feedback
Great! You have a lot of rich experience to discuss. Can you expand by talking about some specific past experiences that show your competence in action? Are there certain standout successes that would speak to your capabilities?

I have worked as a teacher for ten years, so I have the opportunity to build rapport with parents and students. In addition, I volunteer as a coach for middle school students, where we meet with students n small groups to discuss coping skills for hot topics relevant in middle school, like relationships, self-esteem, and attitude.
Marcie's Feedback
Great! These experiences have definitely helped to prepare you for this type of career. After mentioning the experiences, consider connecting them to what you'll be doing as a school counselor. For example, explain that your experience building a rapport with parents and students as a teacher directly translates into this role, and teaching coping skills to middle schoolers is something you will also frequently do as a counselor. Make the case for why you're the ideal fit for the role. Good job!
