Most building inspectors do not have to have a formal education; however, some coursework in construction, real estate, or even business can really help you to be successful. Walk the interviewer through your formal or on-the-job training. Be sure to highlight the education that has assisted you most as a building inspector. You can discuss your favorite courses or any classes/workshops that you feel helped you the most in your career.

"I completed my building inspector certificate in 2002 from DeVry University. From there, the majority of my education has been on-the-job training. I found the certificate helpful initially, but after working in the industry for a few years, my knowledge is much more robust and practical. I am also proudly certified by the International Code Council."

My education has been more practical than scholastic. At my plants, I have been responsible for all of the construction done. I am the one who has to make sure that all of the different aspects of the project are done correctly, safely, and on time. I have been inspecting construction for years but never with the ICC certifications and never in the public sector. I am eager to learn the inspection side of construction as a building inspector.

First off, I have twenty plus years in the building trades. With significant time as a carpenter, finish carpenter, concrete form setter and finisher. I also have time as a roofer and electrical wire puller. I started as a laborer and moved up to foreman. I received my ICC B1 cert in April 2020 and took a Mesa Community College class for the 2018 IBC Building code in June 2020.
