Tell us about your overall academic performance so far. Where have you excelled, and where could you improve?

"I am very proud of my achievements during my undergrad education. Those courses added so much value that I will bring to my graduate program. My best courses included X, Y, and Z. I feel I excelled in these because they are related to the medical specialty I plan to follow. Regarding areas of improvement, I can better my time management. I overextended myself last semester with volunteer opportunities, and my study time suffered slightly. Now that I have identified the reason behind my time management challenges, I will only see improvement moving forward."

"The basic sciences are the core courses for any pre-med student, and I have shown in my GPA that I am well above average in my ability to excel in these courses. However, because I have spent so much time on those courses, you will see that my liberal arts courses have taken a back seat concerning my GPA. This result is because of the importance I have placed on my basic science courses. I am working at finding a better balance so that no courses will take a back seat during my studies in medical school."

In addition to explaining where you excelled and can improve academically, it is an excellent idea to mention soft skills you learned or could improve upon. Those skills will be helpful in medical school, and when you become a physician, so they are relevant to the question. Also, when you describe an area where you need to improve, mention what you are doing to improve.
