1. Do you have reliable transportation?
What You Need to Know
This question is intended to ensure you have a reliable mode of transportation to get to and from work without persistent attendance issues. Since it is illegal to ask an interviewee if they have a car, this question serves to seek the same information without asking it directly. If you don't have a car and rely on the train or bus to get to work, and if that is less conventional for your location, inform them you do have a reliable mode of transportation, posturing yourself with positive and confident body language and a warm smile with direct eye contact. Share that you have the means to get to work consistently and on time.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I do have reliable transportation. My vehicle is well maintained, and I am comfortable with the amount of travel required to get to your office every day."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I take public transit; however, I find it is very reliable. I was late to work only once last year, and that was due to a snowstorm, which stalled all of our employees' commutes - including those with personal vehicles. Rest assured, I am reliable and will always come to work on time."

2. How can we motivate you on the job?
What You Need to Know
Understanding what motivates and inspires you and how you stay productive throughout your workday will provide the interviewer insights into how prone you may be to burning out on the job versus finding goals and objectives you're working towards. Describe your approach to your work, regardless of whether the task is high-pressure or monotonous. Explain how you stay motivated and productive throughout your day.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I believe that, for the most part, I am intrinsically motivated. However, I am often encouraged by verbal recognition of my impact and compensation-based rewards. This could be a competition for a gift card or a contest where I can earn a bigger holiday party budget for my team. I am also motivated by my competitive side, so I love being challenged by high performers around me."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"In such a competitive industry, I want to work for the best and with the best. I am motivated by a company that sets high-performance standards and colleagues who work hard to meet them. I love being challenged by my peers to deliver my very best work."

3. Tell me about a risk you’ve taken that paid off.
What You Need to Know
You cannot achieve innovation unless you're willing to risk going against the status quo. Risk-taking comes naturally for some, whereas others prefer the status quo. Your interviewer wants to know if you are risk-averse or a risk taker. When offering your example, present yourself as someone who takes calculated risks, as opposed to someone who is a habitually compulsive risk-taker.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"My motto is that the most basic explanation for what I do is making my bosses' jobs easier, which includes anticipating their needs by understanding them, the other members of my team, the work that needs to be done, and a full scope of the big picture. So, there are, of course, occasions where a quick decision needs to be made, and there's no supervisor there to make the call. If it's urgent, then making that decision without them is a calculated risk. The trick is determining how to make the call without overstepping my bounds but staying true to the big picture and the team's needs. For example..."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"My folks used to say that you can't grow if you're not willing to risk stepping outside your comfort zone. They'd also say that luck is where you find it. They taught me how to pursue my goals and achieve them. Finding opportunity takes work, but seizing that opportunity takes a calculated risk. The calculation is in how well you've stacked the odds in your favor. That takes work. Finding luck takes work. Of course, these are subjective, but applying for this job was risking disappointment, but so far, it's paid off with this interview. If I'm not offered the job, that will be a disappointment, but it still has its rewards. There's a growth opportunity there to learn from it and improve upon my performance, further stacking the odds in my favor."

4. How do you plan your days?
What You Need to Know
Share the methods you employ and the resources you utilize to plan your work and stay organized on the job and describe how well you manage your time at work and home. Share how you keep your work and personal life balanced. Exhibit professionalism and explain how you take advantage of your time management skills to set yourself up for success and reduce stress.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Attendance is important to me, and I have a track record of showing up early to my shifts. I keep my day organized and stick to my routine as much as possible. No matter what alarm clock you use, the snooze button is there. I never hit mine. I keep a jar of chocolate-covered espresso beans next to my bed. When my alarm goes off, I grab a few of those and pop them in my mouth. Then I'm ready, and I almost always get to work early. This gives me time to stroll through work, saying my hellos, checking in on an individual level, and keeping a sharp eye out for any details which might grab my attention. Then I check my inbox and review anything new or urgent. I review the priorities I tracked the evening before, adjust them accordingly, explore my resources, and get to work. If I have a lot on my plate at work or home, I evaluate every piece of the puzzle. I make it all fit into my week. Just spending that bit of time at the forefront to strategize my week allows things to feel more sustainable. I'm proactive, I guess. Reaction is rarely sustainable, in my humble opinion."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I create a daily task list for myself. Anything that carries over, I'll add to my next day's list at the end of each workday while everything is fresh and still in my mind. At that same time, I'll reevaluate anything I added that day to my list and prioritize it accordingly. Once something is done, or at least when each stage of something is done, I'll mark that off as well. It also doubles as an effective way of measuring my success and progress in my self-growth. This way, any time I perform a self-evaluation of my performance, I can better identify my developmental progress and ask for help when I feel like I should be farther along. Sharing this with my superiors helps them help me along."

1st Answer Example
"I was part of a team responsible for building the different bots for a platform. We divided our team into three sections - two for monitoring and security, two for flagging spam, and two for testing our security. Somehow, things got off track with the team. It turned into a not-so-friendly competition to see who could out-perform each other's work, hurting the group's productivity and losing sight of the intention of the project. It also created some strain and friction between certain individuals on the team. I pointed this out and influenced everyone to work together on developing each set of bots in stages. I encouraged each team member to rotate working side by side together. This way, each of us got to work closely with everyone else. This fostered our teamwork mentality and created a situation where we over-performed as a group, turning our project around."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Someone on our team went on leave due to a medical issue, which left our supervisors scrambling to finish several projects. They needed me to take over the project for the person on leave and asked me to do my best. That's all I got. So I logged into their computer station and researched their system to determine where they left off. It took some creativity to piece everything together, and luckily some of the leg work had already been done, albeit not the way I would have tackled the project. In the end, since they had built the foundation in a way that made me look at the project through a different lens and approach, the project was a unique success. It was better than either one of us could have delivered. I attribute the successful outcome to it being a group effort."

What You Need to Know
Perform your research. Visit Dyson's website and read through every page. Read up on any media attention they've received. Explore some of the challenges the industry faces today. Familiarize yourself with their mission statement and core values. Doing so suggests drive and ambition, that you have a strong work ethic, and that you go above and beyond even when you aren't getting paid, which suggests above and beyond is your standard. 7. What part of this career brings you the most stress?
What You Need to Know
Stress can often be a regular part of the day-to-day work experience. This question aims to reveal your emotional intelligence and whether you have a professional handle on your stressors. Your answer will also show how well your knowledge of this position aligns with the realities of the job. The aim is not only to relay your relevant experience to this position but to exhibit your ability to remain cool and collected under pressure. Speak about your professional experience. Exhibit your ability to step outside of your comfort zone and stay grounded working under pressure. Ensure your answer doesn't suggest you're unfit for the position. (IE: a bus driver should not find driving the most stressful part of the job).
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when the schedule is running behind for no good reason other than lack of hustle on my team's part. I like to be on time with our schedule to ensure that our clients are assisted properly."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I find that the primary stressor in my current position is that my team is not as reliable as I would like. For this reason, I am seeking a new opportunity, within a professional environment, with a team who values their jobs as much as I do."

8. How competitive are you?
What You Need to Know
This question delves into your concept of teamwork. Frequently, those pursuing career goals are singularly focused on their ambition and can be competitive when pursuing those career milestones and responsibilities which can help them advance their careers. However, there are occasions where a little workplace competition is appropriate. Assure the interviewer you can be competitive when appropriate, keeping your focus on fostering a collaborative and team-oriented work environment. A person who supports their team, leads by example, is a positive influence, and mentors others grasps the big picture of which approach has greater potential to further the development of their career.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I think that on a scale of 1-10, I would rate myself as a 7 when it comes to being competitive. I love great competition in the workplace when it comes to sales goals and breaking through last year's numbers. I also love being challenged by the high performers around me to do my very best. But I know there's a healthy limit to my competitive streak - I am not competitive to the point that it would hurt my team or colleagues."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I can be competitive when it's required. For instance, when a sales goal is at hand, or a contest is offered, I'm all in, and I love the banter and friendly competition that comes with that kind of organized challenge. I also enjoy tracking industry competitors and take great pride in doing my part to keep my organization a step ahead of the competition."

9. Do people see you as a trustworthy and honest individual?
What You Need to Know
It is easy to claim to be trustworthy and honest, but it's better to back it up. Your answer needs to speak to your self-perception and your philosophical approach to your integrity. Choose your words carefully. Explore your approach to emotionally confusing situations and how your integrity influences your responses. Offer the value you see in transparency, all while respecting the chain of command.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I am often told that I am an honest and trustworthy individual, and you will be able to hear that directly from my supervisor when you call for a reference. I fully understand the importance of being able to depend on the honesty of your employees, and my goal would always be to act in the best interests of Dyson, which includes personifying the kind of integrity and honesty that are part of your solutions-focused culture."

10. Outside of work, what type of creative activities do you like to pursue?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer asks this question to gain a more casual insight into your makeup, passions, and motivators. A creatively inclined individual will participate in outside activities separate from the workplace. If you can align your activities with the elements of what this opportunity presents, all the better. Share the hobbies and interests that make you seem exciting and memorable. Find relatable points of common interest. The less guarded you are about your personal life, the more it suggests you'll be able to foster positive interpersonal work relationships. Your interviewer will consider this while evaluating your fit into their team. Tell the interviewer about the variety of ways you express your creativity. Stay away from anything that might present a conflict, such as having a rock band that requires you to take a lot of time off work to tour and build more of a following, which would take away from your time commitment to your employer.

11. Dyson has many competitors in the area. Are you currently interviewing with any of them? If you were offered multiple positions, why would you choose us?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer would like to know if you have any other prospects with any of their competitors and if you have a timetable to land a position. They're likewise interested where they scale on your position wishlist. Discuss why you would choose Dyson if you received other offers. They don't expect you to put all your eggs in one basket. But they also don't want to hire someone who isn't just looking for any job or who might join their organization only to leave a few days later for a better opportunity. Assure your interviewer that you are interested in joining them and not just looking for any job to fill your time at the moment.

12. Have you progressed in your career as you expected?
What You Need to Know

I feel that this particular position is a reasonable next step to take my career in a satisfying direction."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022

Communication
14. How do you handle a situation where your supervisor does not properly communicate information to you?
What You Need to Know
Effective communication is integral, yet not everyone communicates the same. This question is less about your supervisor's communication skills and more about how well you can adapt your communication style to others. Therefore, this question tests your communication skills, including how you'll communicate your answer to this question. Your interviewer also wants to get a sense of how well you relate to those in positions of authority and the experience level of your communication skills. Those with advanced communications skills are typically emotionally grounded. Discuss an occasion where you put in extra effort to enhance communication with a supervisor who lacked such skills. Some of the best communication tools are active listening and mirroring. Offer an example where you've applied these or other effective communication tools you have.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Whenever I have had a supervisor who does not properly communicate with me, I first try to learn their communication style and emulate it. I also try to ask questions and document instructions in writing as much as possible to ensure I understand."
Written by Michelle Clark on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I try to be independent and find as many answers as possible on my own. As much as I would love to always work with supervisors who are great communicators, that is not always a realistic ask. I also try to repeat instructions to verify that I'm hearing and interpreting what the supervisor wants."

I took it on successfully by leaning on my team, reading a lot of company manuals, and asking many questions. Once my manager returned, she was pleased with my progress, and I was awarded a promotion."

2nd Answer Example
"I am often asked to perform tasks outside of my wheelhouse. I believe if we don't take on more than we feel prepared for, then we'll never learn. I've stretched in my current role to take on customer dispute resolution, which was difficult for me at first since I'm naturally conflict-averse. But with good training and encouragement from my supervisor, I've been able to help find solutions for our customers in uncomfortable situations."

When I was an intern in the Design Department, my director asked me to go to the marketing department to get quotes from consulting suppliers and select the right one for a new wooden product, and communicate with Research and Development department to collect technique advice. Since I had little experience, I had never dealt with this situation. I read the reports in the past and talked a lot with the R&D department. I learned how companies make selection decisions and make decisions based on demand, cost, and technology limitations. I regard these tasks as great opportunities to learn and grow. With this experience, I am able to consider more different aspects. At the same time, improve my communication skills."

22. Which of your skills and experiences make you appropriate for this job?
What You Need to Know
Focus on your transferable skills. Place less emphasis on your hard skills unless you can go much deeper than your resume. Focus on those harder-to-quantify soft skills, such as your time management, project management, interpersonal, and communication skills. If you have acted in a leadership role, offer that up as well. Dyson advertises on their career page that they are looking for innovators. Think of any time you have implemented improvements in the workplace, great or small.

1st Answer Example
"Well, I'm good at what I do and take pride in my work. I am a calculated risk taker, so I have a solid track record for success. I try to go above and beyond when I can and when deadlines allow. But what sets me apart is my attitude. One thing I learned, no matter where I've worked, is that attitude is contagious. I'm happy-go-lucky and see the glass as always half full, at the very least. Most days, my cup runneth over. So I can be a motivator, steering the attitude of the team. I'm an excellent mentor. I'm all about promoting strengths, not exploiting weaknesses. I have a lot of integrity, especially in my interactions with my team and clients. After they get to know me, I establish trust and build lasting relationships."

I am a part of the team and never quit unless ordered to, so I rarely fail. I am eager to learn, grow, and have a great attitude. I strive to be the employee I'd want to hire."

24. What would your previous employer would say about you?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer asks this question to see how you handle stress at the moment. If this question makes a candidate nervous, this will raise the question of how honest a candidate has been about their qualifications and accomplishments. Many who've had this question posed to them wonder if they've already conversed with their previous employer. In most states, previous employers will disclose very little about your previous employment and work history out of the concern of defamation lawsuits resulting from heresy. Therefore, it is likely they do not know how you will answer, so there is no need to feel nervous about this question. If the interviewee comes across as confident and provides a notable answer consistent with the rest of the interview, that may offer the interviewer greater confidence in the candidate's abilities.
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"They's say that I am a clutch player, and a go-to employee. They'd say I am a positive force in the workplace, a booster for morale, and that I'm always the first person to step up to the plate. They'd also say that I hold myself to too high a standard at times, and that I can be hard on myself when I don't meet my own standard which is rare, but I am working on that, on both my track record and going easier on myself, that is."
Written by Kevin Downey on July 16th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"They'd say that I get it. I can't tell you how many times I've heard that. It boils down to my attitude. The way I see it, my job is performing all the duties in my job description, padding the job whenever I can, and making the habit of going above and beyond. I'll always view the basics of my job as putting my all in, anticipating the needs of my superiors, and doing everything I can to make their job easier."

I feel that it is essential to submit error-free work."

What You Need to Know

32. As a manager, what is your greatest weakness?
What You Need to Know
This may feel like a problematic question to navigate. The goal of the question is to test how you overcome challenging situations. Therefore, the trick to mastering this question is by framing your self-perceived weakness as an asset in its own right. 1st Answer Example
"As a manager, I feel that my greatest weakness is separating employees as quickly as possible when they begin to show signs that they are not going to work out. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and have been known to continue trying to nurture people when they are overdue for termination. I have taken management training classes focusing on this area, and I'm also working with an industry mentor; I feel I'm improving in objectively approaching separating employees who aren't a good fit."

"Some feedback I received in my current role is that I could improve my technical skills in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint. I have all the basics covered, but when it comes to more complicated formulas or visualization of data, I don't have much experience.
