"I believe that, for the most part, I am intrinsically motivated. However, I am often encouraged by verbal recognition of my impact and compensation-based rewards. This could be a competition for a gift card or a contest where I can earn a bigger holiday party budget for my team. I am also motivated by my competitive side, so I love being challenged by high performers around me."

Understanding what motivates and inspires you and how you stay productive throughout your workday will provide the interviewer insights into how prone you may be to burning out on the job versus finding goals and objectives you're working towards. I take short breaks and move around throughout the day, and have regular check-ins with my supervisor or team. Tell me about a risk you’ve taken that paid off.

"My motto is that the most basic explanation for what I do is making my bosses' jobs easier, which includes anticipating their needs by understanding them, the other members of my team, the work that needs to be done, and a full scope of the big picture. So, there are, of course, occasions where a quick decision needs to be made, and there's no supervisor there to make the call. If it's urgent, then making that decision without them is a calculated risk. The trick is determining how to make the call without overstepping my bounds but staying true to the big picture and the team's needs. For example..."

You cannot achieve innovation unless you're willing to risk going against the status quo. Risk-taking comes naturally for some, whereas others prefer the status quo. Of course, these are subjective, but applying for this job was risking disappointment, but so far, it's paid off with this interview. If I'm not offered the job, that will be a disappointment, but it still has its rewards. There's a growth opportunity there to learn from it and improve upon my performance, further stacking the odds in my favor."

How do you plan your days?

"Attendance is important to me, and I have a track record of showing up early to my shifts. I keep my day organized and stick to my routine as much as possible. No matter what alarm clock you use, the snooze button is there. I never hit mine. I keep a jar of chocolate-covered espresso beans next to my bed. When my alarm goes off, I grab a few of those and pop them in my mouth. Then I'm ready, and I almost always get to work early. This gives me time to stroll through work, saying my hellos, checking in on an individual level, and keeping a sharp eye out for any details which might grab my attention. Then I check my inbox and review anything new or urgent. I review the priorities I tracked the evening before, adjust them accordingly, explore my resources, and get to work. If I have a lot on my plate at work or home, I evaluate every piece of the puzzle. I make it all fit into my week. Just spending that bit of time at the forefront to strategize my week allows things to feel more sustainable. I'm proactive, I guess. Reaction is rarely sustainable, in my humble opinion."

"I create a daily task list for myself. Anything that carries over, I'll add to my next day's list at the end of each workday while everything is fresh and still in my mind. At that same time, I'll reevaluate anything I added that day to my list and prioritize it accordingly. Once something is done, or at least when each stage of something is done, I'll mark that off as well. It also doubles as an effective way of measuring my success and progress in my self-growth. This way, any time I perform a self-evaluation of my performance, I can better identify my developmental progress and ask for help when I feel like I should be farther along. Sharing this with my superiors helps them help me along."

Tell me about being confronted with a problem that required creativity to solve.

"I was part of a team responsible for building the different bots for a platform. We divided our team into three sections - two for monitoring and security, two for flagging spam, and two for testing our security. Somehow, things got off track with the team. It turned into a not-so-friendly competition to see who could out-perform each other's work, hurting the group's productivity and losing sight of the intention of the project. It also created some strain and friction between certain individuals on the team. I pointed this out and influenced everyone to work together on developing each set of bots in stages. I encouraged each team member to rotate working side by side together. This way, each of us got to work closely with everyone else. This fostered our teamwork mentality and created a situation where we over-performed as a group, turning our project around."

Dyson states on their website that they are looking for innovators and pioneers who push the boundaries and defy convention. It's widely recognized that innovation is integral to team collaboration and leadership. They're seeking to measure your preferred working style, how resourceful you are, whether you exhibit 'outside-of-the-box thinking, and how well your sense of these things meets their required criteria. "Someone on our team went on leave due to a medical issue, which left our supervisors scrambling to finish several projects. They needed me to take over the project for the person on leave and asked me to do my best. That's all I got. So I logged into their computer station and researched their system to determine where they left off. It took some creativity to piece everything together, and luckily some of the leg work had already been done, albeit not the way I would have tackled the project. In the end, since they had built the foundation in a way that made me look at the project through a different lens and approach, the project was a unique success. It was better than either one of us could have delivered. I attribute the successful outcome to it being a group effort."

What do you know about the company?

"The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when the schedule is running behind for no good reason other than lack of hustle on my team's part. I like to be on time with our schedule to ensure that our clients are assisted properly."

But I know there's a healthy limit to my competitive streak - I am not competitive to the point that it would hurt my team or colleagues."

"I have sent out only a few resumes, and most of them are in this industry. With that said, my first choice would be with Dyson because you are, quite simply, the best in your industry. I understand that Dyson may not be an easy place to work, but I believe the challenges it presents will help me grow as an innovator and an engineering leader."

"The first thing is to make sure I understand my supervisor's requirements, and then I will try to work out problems independently. I will do some research to find out more about the task, and I will also actively ask for help from my experienced colleagues when I am in ambiguity."

"I love this kind of challenge. Anyone interacting with the Dyson company has a need to be met or a problem that needs to be solved. That's the key - because Dyson is in the problem-solving business. Once we can clearly define that need or challenge, we can start brainstorming all the 'new thinking' and engineering solutions that can solve those problems in ways the customer can't even fathom."

"My customer service philosophy is that you should always say 'yes' or 'I will try.' I avoid saying the word 'no' as often as possible because I know my role is to solve a problem for that particular customer. Many customers have given my supervisor positive reviews on their experience with me, and I believe my approach syncs well with the customer- and innovation-centric focus of the Dyson brand."

"Not long after beginning my current role, I was charged with creating a presentation for an important event. After my manager reviewed my work, he felt that some slides required additional copy and had different design concepts in mind. He had a background in graphic design, and since I do not, I listened to his ideas and incorporated them. I also appreciated that he was clear and specific in his expectations. In the end, I felt the presentation was much improved, and since then, I have tried to include those same design concepts."

How you frame your answer will show the interviewer how responsive you are to feedback and whether you take advantage of feedback as an opportunity to grow, or if you respond defensively, taking it as an attack on your character. "My current manager often double-checks to ensure that I follow protocol at all times. I understand that she values thoroughness, and I welcome this kind of review because I am also detail-oriented. "Not long after beginning my last job, I was asked to design a gas bottle holder. I thought it was not difficult, I even thought it was really easy, just a small rubber holder. Then the next day I showed at least 8 plans to my manager, I was so confident. But none of them passed. My manager said I did a lot of work without any research. This just jumped out of my mind - no environment, no target users. So these were not good enough. So after then, I realized no matter how easy and small it is, I should always focus on being human-centered in my design."

The environment at Dyson is fast-paced and challenging. How do you determine priorities when you have multiple projects due?

"First and foremost, I will prioritize projects that most closely align with the company's strategic goals and have the highest potential to affect the company's bottom line. In addition, I often determine which projects require my attention by the number of hours we are behind and then the project size. I am comfortable delegating tasks when needed, but I am also aware that these times will require additional hours from me. Never have I underdelivered on a deadline."

Think about how you decide which task needs your attention the most when you feel torn between multiple projects. Employers ask this interview question to assess your ability to distinguish between urgent and lower priority tasks and how well you manage and complete your work assignments. "Assuming that the projects have different stakeholders, I interview each to determine the value of increased productivity, morale or revenue, decreased costs, and the overall impact."

"First of all, I will list the goal of each project. I will see which one will have the most influence on the company's development and decide to finish it first. Secondly, I will list all the projects which must be completed by cooperation. I don't want to be the one who blocks the progress, so I will finish my part first and let my colleagues do their parts. It is the best way to save time."

"If hired, I feel I would complement Dyson's organization because I am a fast learner and passionate about using technology to meet customers' day-to-day needs in a way previously unimagined. "I learned a bit about competitive pricing, markups, and successful price-driven promotions while earning my undergraduate business degree. I understand the standard markup that most companies seek and can discount if they are overstocked or need room for negotiations. However, I look forward to exploring more about how Dyson sets up its pricing model in the best interests of the end customer and the company's bottom line."

"When my manager went on unexpected medical leave for three months last year, I was asked to step into her position in the interim. I knew the basics of her role but was not trained on its specifics. I took it on successfully by leaning on my team, reading a lot of company manuals, and asking many questions. Once my manager returned, she was pleased with my progress, and I was awarded a promotion."

Think about a time you had to take on a task or a role that you felt was over your experience level or outside your comfort zone, and whether you were volunteered or volunteered yourself for this growth opportunity. I've stretched in my current role to take on customer dispute resolution, which was difficult for me at first since I'm naturally conflict-averse. But with good training and encouragement from my supervisor, I've been able to help find solutions for our customers in uncomfortable situations."

"When I acted as an intern in the Marketing Insight and Solutions Department, my director asked me to analyze the market of new material. Since I had little experience, I had no clue at first. "Well, I'm good at what I do and take pride in my work. I am a calculated risk taker, so I have a solid track record for success. I try to go above and beyond when I can and when deadlines allow. But what sets me apart is my attitude. One thing I learned, no matter where I've worked, is that attitude is contagious. I'm happy-go-lucky and see the glass as always half full, at the very least. Most days, my cup runneth over. So I can be a motivator, steering the attitude of the team. I'm an excellent mentor. I'm all about promoting strengths, not exploiting weaknesses. I have a lot of integrity, especially in my interactions with my team and clients. After they get to know me, I establish trust and build lasting relationships."

"I am an intermediate user in Microsoft Dynamics and Retail Pro. In addition to these POS systems, I have three years of experience in Paragon ERP. I feel confident that I can adapt to any POS system Dyson has in place to deliver my best work."

Give the interviewer a brief overview of the POS and Inventory Management software and systems you have used in the past. You can also list any additional programs in which you are well versed. If you do not have experience with their software, assure them that you learn software fast and are self-guided in your work.
