Disney-ABC Television Group Interview Questions

  1. 1.

How is social media changing the way people consume news, today? What can Disney-ABC Television Group do to remain relevant?

With 'fake news' running rampant, we are quick to blame online content and social media platforms for the misinformation. Today, people read an article or a post, share it, it goes viral, and before you know it, millions of people are misinformed about a significant topic. However, it isn't all bad!

Social platforms allow people, who may otherwise not take the time to sit down and watch a network news program, to stay in-the-know. Talk to the interviewer about what Disney-ABC Television Group can do to embrace this movement. Be sure to compliment them on the efforts they already have in place.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I believe that social media has changed the way people consume news today in both positive and harmful ways. We do have a lot more 'fake news' going on today, being spread rapidly due to the ease of social sharing. With that said, social media is now the primary source of news online, giving broadcasters a unique opportunity to put out omnichannel content, furthering their reach. From what I see, Disney-ABC is doing an excellent job in remaining relevant. My only suggestion would be to increase the content on Instagram's IGTV, which is relatively new but very relevant."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Social media is broadening the conversation to include people who would otherwise not take the time to be involved in current events. Take political campaigns these days, and how many more people are going out to vote or even becoming involved in social movements such as #metoo. I follow Disney-ABC Television Group closely on multiple channels and think you are doing an excellent job in remaining relevant and staying in the conversation. Creating viral hashtags is another valuable effort that I can help Disney-ABC Television Group with, should I be the successful candidate."

  2. 2.

If you could pitch an idea for a news segment today, what would it be?

The interviewer would like to get to know you apart from your resume. Since there are multiple areas of interest when it comes to the news (current events, sports, politics, etc.), Disney-ABC Television Group wants to uncover what sparks and motivates you the most. Discuss an idea you would pitch for a news show today if you had full control. Be sure to show excitement and enthusiasm!

      Rachelle's Answer

"I love to pitch show ideas, and I have a running document with ideas that come to me throughout the day. I am working on smoothing a few of them out right now. One of these ideas is a show on emerging female athletes in our region. I believe there are so many talented girls out there who could use an extra boost of funding and community support. If you're interested, I would be happy to flesh that idea out further and formally pitch it once I begin working for Disney-ABC Television Group."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would love to gain more experience when it comes to pitching news segments. I am very dedicated when it comes to political topics and reporting. I would pitch a news segment giving viewers an insiders' look at how campaigns are built and won. I find this topic fascinating and am sure your audience would as well."

  3. 3.

What methods do you use, to work within your company's brand voice consistently?

When working on digital content, you will be asked to remain in line with your employers brand, and even perhaps the brand of your clients. The interviewer would like to know how you ensure that you maintain a brand's voice, consistently delivering it across multiple platforms or channels. Discuss your best methods for preserving brand voice, and be sure to express that you understand the importance of this skill.

      Rachelle's Answer

"One tool that my current employer uses, and I find to be very helpful, is our internal Style Guide. This style guide is a tool for writers, producers, and creatives of all kinds, to refer to when they are unsure if their idea is on-track with the company's brand. Another method that I refer to often is to first storyboard the 'voice' that I want before beginning a project. I can create a clear narrative around the marketing effort very early on in the project."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I fully understand how critical it is to work within a brand's voice consistently throughout a project. One method that I enjoy using is to create a guide that outlines the jargon or colloquialisms that are acceptable to use in the campaign. Somewhat like a style guide, but easier to refer back to. I also feel it's important to make the voice of a brand a company-wide initiative so that co-workers can check in with each other to ensure all work is consistent and the best it can be."

  4. 4.

The news runs 24/7. How do you feel about an overnight shift, working on weekends, and holidays?

It is vital to Disney-ABC Television Group that you offer flexibility in your schedule. Since the news never stops, neither will ABC and their news reporting efforts. Discuss your calendar with the interviewer, highlighting any limitations that you may have. Be as flexible as possible, showing that you are a team player.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role, I worked the overnight shift for eight years. Through my tenure and solid news programming work, I earned a seat in the daytime news operation. This shift is my preference for any roles moving forward. With that said, I have no issue working overtime or jumping into the odd overnight shift to help out my team."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Being new to my career in news programming, I fully understand that I should take the types of roles offered to me at this time. If ABC has overnight shifts with some overtime, weekends, and holidays then count me in. I am looking forward to carving out a career with Disney-ABC Television Group and have no issue starting where I am needed."

  5. 5.

Tell me about an organization or group outside of work that you contributed to.

Disney-ABC Television Group understands the importance of philanthropy. In 2017, Disney gave more than $348 million to nonprofit organizations helping kids, families, and communities in need through charitable cash giving, in-kind contributions, and public service announcements. Disney employees often give back in the form of service.

The interviewer would like to know if you are giving of your time in the sense of volunteering. Many hiring managers will choose one candidate over another because of their volunteer experience. They feel that it shows strong character and selflessness which are all qualities that make a great employee.

Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to give back to your community in some form of volunteerism. If you do not have formal volunteer experience, you can draw on things you do in your spare time to assist friends, family, or even your current employer.

If you do have volunteer experience: "For the past eight months, I have volunteered every Wednesday evening at our local animal shelter. I will help with grooming the animals, feeding them, and walking them. It's been an enjoyable experience and rewarding at the same time."

If you do not have volunteer experience: "I have not formally volunteered in these most recent years, however; I spend a lot of time helping my sister who is a single mom. I will babysit on weekends, cook dinners for her and drive the kids to appointments when necessary. I feel that it is imperative to take care of the needs of the family."

      Rachelle's Answer

"For the past eight months, I have volunteered every Wednesday evening at our local animal shelter. I will help with grooming the animals, feeding them, and walking them. It's been an enjoyable experience and rewarding at the same time."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I help people out when the opportunity presents itself, rather than commit to a formal volunteer role. My strengths are in marketing and content writing so, for that reason, I look for opportunities that will allow me to share these strengths with others. Most recently I helped a single mom who lost her job by re-doing her resume and helping her to fix up her brand. It made all the difference in her level of confidence, and she landed a job shortly after."

  6. 6.

How do you balance life and work?

Life as a Disney-ABC Television Group employee will be a busy one, and the interviewer would like to know how you balance it all while keeping your stress levels at bay. It is essential to keep a healthy work/life balance to prevent burnout. Talk to the interviewer about how you can maintain that appropriate balance for yourself. You do not want to answer as though work is so exhausting that you cannot keep up, but you also do not want to come across as a workaholic either. Find a healthy balance.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I find that with the right company, it's pretty simple to balance life and work. When I enjoy what I do, it doesn't feel like a chore. I am always sure that when at home, my family gets my attention first. I take time on the weekends to do things for myself and ensure that I regenerate before the work week begins."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Work smarter, not harder! I follow this piece of advice often and lead my teams to do the same. When we can streamline the process and become efficient, we can then focus less on the total amount of hours worked."

  7. 7.

Have you ever managed or helped with a content budget? If so, what type of budgets are you accustomed to working with?

Before your interview, take some time to gather data related to the budgets you have worked with, and the times when you have come in under budget. This way, you will be prepared with specifics when asked about your budgetary experience.

The interviewer wants to see that you have great insight when it comes to being budget conscious. Appropriate planning is one of the keys to a successful project, so be sure to discuss the steps that you take to plan a project's dollar spend carefully.

Every dollar counts, even if you are working for a massive company like Disney-ABC Television Group! If you do not have experience in budget management, refer to the fact that you are responsible and resourceful.

      Rachelle's Answer

"Most of the budgets that I have worked within are spread amongst a variety of digital production and creative costs. I have worked on budgets as small as $5,000 and as large as $15M. No matter the size of the budget, it's incredibly important that every dollar is treated as though it's my own; being wisely allocated and accounted for."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Although my experience does not yet include budget management, I have made recommendations on cost savings when it comes to content writing, video production, and talent acquisition. I feel that with the right training, and some more work experience, I will be ready to assist with content budgeting in no time."

  8. 8.

Do you feel that you are currently paid what you are worth?

The interviewer would like to know if you feel undervalued in your current role. Many employees will look for new work if they think that they are underpaid and underappreciated. Of course, this potential new employer wants to ensure that they will make you a competitive offer that will entice you to join their organization, and stay there. Talk to the interviewer about your current compensation and whether or not you feel it is fair. Be sure to have researched your answer to back you up, versus throwing out a random number and hoping it will stick.

If you think you receive what you are worth: "I feel that my current employer pays me fairly; however, I would like to see an increase in pay with an increase in responsibilities."

If you do not feel you are currently paid what you are worth: "I know that I am underpaid compared to my industry colleagues. My company is small, and they do what they can, but this is part of why I am seeking a new position."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I feel that my current employer pays me fairly; however, I would like to see an increase in pay with an increase in responsibilities."

      Rachelle's Answer

"Initially, I was paid my worth, when I first accepted my role. However, since then, my team has grown exponentially, and I have not received a raise. I have researched the scope of my role and believe that if I were to start in my same role today, I could ask for approximately $20K/year more than I currently receive."

  9. 9.

When have you worked among a diverse group of people?

The interviewer would like to know that you are accustomed to working with a broad range of people. Are you accustomed to working with a very large or diverse team of individuals? Assure the interviewer that you can handle an environment that offers diversity.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have worked with diverse groups of people most of my career, including my time at University. I am most comfortable, and happy, in this type of environment because it offers a great learning opportunity."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I have worked in a diverse environment my entire media career. A successful media or television agency should embrace human differences of all kinds. It's what spurs creativity and genius ideas!"

  10. 10.

Walk me through your experience working alongside other network departments including Marketing, Ad Sales, Press, Research, Digital, and Social.

Disney-ABC Television Group is all about collaboration, and the hiring authority wants to know that you are, too! Think about a project or two where you worked closely with co-workers from other departments. Talk to the interviewer about the types of people you worked alongside (job titles, seniority, etc.) and then point out what you learned. Be sure to reference the fact that collaboration is something that you enjoy.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role I work with the department heads and other senior management in the Digital and Social Networking department. I also work alongside many content writers, who often vary, depending on the style or nature of the work. For the most part, the projects are for digital video campaigns for social media platforms. I believe that cross-departmental collaboration, when done right, is what can set a company apart from its competition. When all creative minds work together as one, incredible things can happen!"

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a recent graduate, the bulk of my cross-collaboration is with other students, groups within my university, or one-on-one project partnerships. I enjoy collaboration as it allows people to pass ideas around, working together on one important goal. I look forward to working with the various departments within Disney-ABC Television Group and getting to know a few of your teams!"

  11. 11.

What expertise do you bring in digital KPIs and analytics?

Be prepared to discuss with the interviewer the types of digital KPIs and analytics you are accustomed to tracking. Some important KPIs in the world of digital content creation may include analytics around reach; including unique visits. Engagement rates; including time spent on your page, ad, or video. You may also look at the number of engaged comments or social sharing rates. Talk to the interviewer about the KPIs that you currently work with, and why you believe they are essential to track.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role, the numbers that I care about the most include our sentiment rates. I look at the number of comments and engagement. I like to see soaring numbers when it comes to social media shares or @ tags. Nothing feels as great as seeing your digital content go viral and I look forward to achieving more of that in my career with Disney-ABC Television Group."

      Rachelle's Answer

"When it comes to digital KPIs, my current employer puts a significant focus on social sharing and engaged comments. When digital content is good, viewers will quickly share without hesitation. When engagement rates are high, it's a quick indicator that your content is on point."

  12. 12.

Who is your favorite ABC News journalist, and why?

The interviewer at Disney-ABC Television Group is checking to see how familiar you are with their broadcast news team. It's one thing to say that you go to ABC as your news source; however, it's another thing to be able to back your claim with details. That is the nature of the news, after all! Mention the journalist that you enjoy watching the most, and give some reasons as to why. Make sure you have a thoughtful response planned, going further than just a surface comment regarding someone's personality or appearance.

      Rachelle's Answer

"My favorite journalist on the Disney-ABC Television Group network would be Dan Harris. I have been following his work my entire professional life and appreciate the integrity he keeps in his journalism. Also, I see that he is active in his community, while also taking on global volunteer efforts. I appreciate the full immersion in his news and community efforts, as well as his lighthearted sense of humor when it's appropriate."

      Rachelle's Answer

"My favorite journalist at ABC is Elizabeth Vargas. I remember watching her on the news as a teen and have always enjoyed her stealth approach to broadcasting. It's great to see a female investigative journalist pave the way for other women in the industry. It would be a pleasure to work with her on a story one day!"

  13. 13.

Walk me through your experience with department management, studio clients and vendors.

The purpose of this question is to uncover whether you are experienced with cross-collaboration when it comes to other internal departments, clients, and vendors which Disney-ABC Television Group would rely upon. Talk about the groups and people that you collaborate with regularly, in your current role.

      Rachelle's Answer

"In my current role I will collaborate with a variety of groups every single day. One day I may be working with the social media creatives and the human resources department, while also juggling multiple talent agents. The next day, I could be collaborating with a whole other group. I enjoy the challenge and the variety in communication that comes with working in this type of environment."

      Rachelle's Answer

"As a recent graduate, my experience working in cross-collaborative environments is limited to my educational experience. While attending university, I worked with people of all personality types, needs, and approaches to work. I can pivot when needed, and can work with a variety of groups such as multiple Disney-ABC Television Group departments, clients, and vendors."

  14. 14.

Walk me through your experience with YouTube and Instagram's IGTV programming. Which platform do you prefer?

Many digital content creators have been having the 'YouTube versus IGTV' conversation as of late. Before your interview, check out Disney-ABC Television Group channels on each platform to see if you can recognize if they have a preference between the two. Be sure to keep your response positive, providing a well-researched argument for and against, each platform.

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am more familiar with YouTube, considering it has been around for much longer; however, I believe that they each have their relevance without having to be direct competitors. Kind of like Coke and Sprite. There is room for each of them to be a favorite in their own time. I do not believe that IGTV will replace YouTube; rather, I think they compliment each other. IGTV offers more on-trend videos, where YouTube is great for longer-form media such as videos, movies, and series watching."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I do lean more towards IGTV because I am very familiar with it; having immersed myself in the Instagram feature the moment it came out. With nearly a billion monthly users, I feel that there is a ton of content online. I will say that it's harder to filter through what you want, leaving YouTube an easier user experience when it comes to watching specific content that a user is eager to find."

  15. 15.

How would you rate your performance in this interview so far?

The interviewer would like to know if you are satisfied with your interview performance. If your interview were a flop, you would know, and it's much better to address outright your performance than try to sweep it under the rug.

If you feel that your performance in the interview is going well: 'I believe that this interview has been quite informative and I am happy with my performance. Is there anything that I can clarify for you from this conversation?'

If you feel that your performance in the interview is not going well: "I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

      Rachelle's Answer

"I would rate my performance to 90% of my ability. When you asked about my vendor relations experience, I feel that missed expressing some of my experience in dispute resolution and account management. If you have time, I would like to cover that question further."
