Whether you will be working in direct sales or product design with the customers of CONMED or a back office support role, the ability to have difficult conversations where bad news needs to be shared is important to your interviewer. You may face a situation where biopsy valves are out of stock and back-ordered when a hospital is in need or where you have to let a colleague know that you are behind on your work and an important deadline may need to be extended. What will be important as you answer this question is focusing on the little things as you communicate. Some things you will want to focus on will be planning the conversation, giving time to listen, and being open and honest with little fluff to the conversation. If you have an example of a time you had to have a difficult conversation and did so with ease, don't hesitate to discuss that conversation.

"Throughout my career, I've proven my ability to have difficult conversations with customers regarding price increases and stock issues. My approach is to not sugarcoat things and be as upfront as possible with the customer. They are busy and have other worries, so I know their time is precious and I always respect that. If possible, I bring data and factual information to the table when having these conversations and I've found that customers take well to having information in hand. Another key to my approach is practicing empathy and putting myself in the shoes of my customers and seeing the impact from their shoes. If I'm lucky enough to join the CONMED team, these are the same approaches I would take."
