Question 4 of 30

Detroit Mercy Dental offers numerous graduate programs. Which specialty interests you the most and why?

"A specialization in Periodontics is most interesting to me; however, I also find Orthodontics fascinating, and these two specializations often complement each other during patient care. I have researched Detroit Mercy's Periodontics curriculum and understand that by taking this learning path, I will attain competencies in preventing, diagnosing, and treating periodontal diseases, including non-surgical and surgical treatment modalities. I became interested in specializing in the placement and maintenance of dental implants since personally discovering how dental implants can make a significant difference in someone's life. Two years ago, I lost a front tooth in a car accident and had to have a dental implant. The periodontist who performed the implant surgery was incredibly skilled, and their work gave so much self-esteem back. I am excited to learn how to perform advanced oral plastic surgical procedures and be able to make a difference in the lives of others through this essential specialization."

"What drew me to dentistry is general dentistry. I appreciated the breadth of it and love the flexibility in terms of procedures that come with it. The general dentists that I shadowed did everything from orthodontics cases to endodontics and to just regular bread-and-butter general dentistry. Currently, I plan to continue with general dentistry, but if accepted, I am definitely keeping my mind open to other specialties as I find each specialty fascinating."
