1. What’s your plan in the event that the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine is unable to accept you this year?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers want assurances that you are determined to succeed. Even if the University of Colorado's School of Dentistry is your first choice, your determination should exhibit that you'll explore every avenue to succeed, whether you get there through their school or elsewhere. Show them that you have a Plan B, a Plan C, and so on. Inform them you'll try elsewhere if you don't get in here, and if you don't get in anywhere, you'll explore what's holding you back and continue to overcome all obstacles by any means necessary. Show that you take responsibility for your actions and are singularly focused and determined to succeed. Showing them that nothing can stop you from being accepted somewhere will display your level of commitment to see your studies through to obtaining your degree and beyond.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Should I not be accepted into dental school the first time, I plan to reapply the following year. I would take that year to upgrade any required courses and prepare an even stronger application. My life's goal is to become a dentist, and I certainly won't take one rejection as a final answer."
Written by Rachelle Enns on August 18th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I will continue to make myself the best applicant possible, be that through research opportunities in the dental field or additional pre-dental coursework to show you that I am not only worthy of being a dental student at your institution but incredibly dedicated as well."

2. What motivated you to pursue a career in dentinstry over another medical field?
What You Need to Know
There are a wide variety of medical fields out there. With so many career options available in the healthcare realm, the interviewers would like to know precisely why you have pursued dentistry. As Denise Kassebaum, DDS, MS, Professor and Dean of the University says, "The School of Dental Medicine believes dental health is critical to overall health, and we are dedicated to integrating dentistry and the other health professions through our innovative educational programs, real-world research, exceptional patient care, and life-changing community outreach initiatives. Believing that there should not be a distinction between dental and systemic health, the SDM emphasizes our intention to integrate 'dental' to improve health." The more specific you can be in your response, the more genuine your reply will feel. Try to align your logic, reasoning, and approach with theirs in identifiable ways to exhibit your research on the college and combed over the site.
The dean also states, "I'm excited for you to take a look around our site and discover the education, research and clinical programs that are shaping tomorrow's dental workforce, creating new knowledge and providing person-centered care. Whether you are a prospective student with an interest in building your future, a potential faculty or partner who wants to make a difference by working with us, I am confident that after browsing our site, you will discover why the CU SDM is one of the most selective US dental schools and is powering the future of integrated health."
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"There are many rewarding professions that I could have pursued within the healthcare industry; however, I specifically chose dentistry because I have experienced firsthand how restoring oral health can change a person's life. From a young age, I had significant bite and jaw issues. I suffered for years from headaches, tension, and dizziness. It wasn't until I visited a highly credible dentist that I was told some of my health issues might be due to my poor bite and the tension in my jaw. I was referred to an orthodontist who put me on a 16-month plan that included an oral stent, Invisalign, and therapeutic ultrasound for myofascial pain. I already knew that I wanted to work in the medical industry; however, this experience prompted me to look further into dentistry as a profession. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to learn more about dentistry and help my future patients transform their health."

3. Is there a specific population, community, or demographic you are primarily interested in serving as a dentist?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers are curious about how aligned your ideals and values are with their own. As they state on their website, "Through building relationships with communities, our programs provide ongoing diagnostic, preventative and restorative services to underserved populations. The Advanced Clinical Training & Service (ACTS) program is a service learning program in which fourth-year dental students provide dental services in an underserved community. Under the supervision of practicing dentists, students provide dental care to children and adults whose access to services is constrained by financial, geographical, physical or medical factors. Current students and alumni say that the ACTS Program is one of their favorite experiences of the DDS curriculum. The reason behind that statement is that students gain a better understanding of healthcare disparities and some of the significant barriers that patients in underserved populations experience seeking health care. After the ACTS experience, students say while they were previously committed to participating in private practice after graduation, the ACTS Program changed their thinking, and they want to give back in different ways."
On another webpage, they state, "Community Engagement - The School of Dental Medicine will provide oral health to underserved populations in our communities, and provide programs to benefit our alumni and other members of the dental profession in Colorado, across the country and around the world."
If you have a genuine interest in this, then share. Go into depth as to how your priorities and altruistic pursuits align with theirs. If this was part of your motive in applying to their college above others, say so.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"First and foremost, I want to be a dentist who takes the time to educate my patients, no matter who there are or where I am working. I would like to spend some time after graduation working in an underserved rural area similar to where I grew up. As a dentist, I will have a powerful opportunity to educate my patients and the public on preventing oral health problems. I can also provide critical nutritional guidance and health care advice as a primary healthcare provider."

4. What are your thoughts and considerations on the high suicide rate among doctors of dental medicine?
What You Need to Know
Some of the risk factors a dentist faces in their career are feelings of job-related isolation, especially when owning your own practice and lacking colleagues to commiserate with. Another factor is the confinement of their work environment, especially when restricted to working in a small windowless treatment room. Some find the work demanding and suffer feelings of a lack of appreciation. That can lead to job dissatisfaction, elevated stress, and feeling burned out, among other contributing factors.
If you have personal experiences with suicide in your life, offer your story as an example of how you are less at risk. Exhibit your awareness of these contributing factors to this statistic and describe your action plan to address these issues. Explain how you navigate these challenges to ensure your success.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I am aware that the suicide rate for dentists is high. I try to meditate regularly, do yoga, and work out every day. These hobbies help me manage stress as a student, and I plan to carry these habits into my professional life."

"I had braces as a teenager and remember that the orthodontist I saw was great at keeping my nerves at bay. He had a cool office and let me pick the color of my elastics, which I always liked. 6. Tell us about a recent emotional setback you experienced and how it impacted your work.
What You Need to Know
Everyone handles the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. However, professionally, it is crucial to separate one's emotions and not allow them to influence your actions, especially in the medical field. Emotions can cloud a person's judgment and negatively impact their capacity for logic and reason. It can be a detriment to the level of care you'd provide as a medical professional. Focus on how you weather the tough times and steer your focus and energies towards your productivity. Speak to your logic and reason and your more functional coping mechanisms.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen to everyone, despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to debrief internally, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

What You Need to Know
How you answer this question will offer the interviewer insights into your confidence and self-perception. They'll have their viewpoint, and you'll have yours. Ideally, you'll want to align your realities. Doing so will offer them confidence in self-awareness. If you feel you could have performed better, don't self-deprecate. That will show that you are thorough in your approach to your work and don't waste any opportunity to succeed.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022

8. Tell us about someone in your life who served as a mentor or source of inspiration.
What You Need to Know
The University of Colorado's website states, "You may find people at different stages in life who serve as mentors, both professionally and personally; some you seek out and some that catch you by surprise. Some may be obvious, like parents, coaches or professors, and some may emerge in unexpected ways."
Think of a source of inspiration that spurred you into action and helped you identify the possibilities you found worthy of aspiring to. Describe these ideals and why they are important to you. Offer them insights into your values and what you hope to achieve. Share who or what inspired you and why, and align your vision where you can with the qualities they look for in their future alumni.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

What You Need to Know
The interviewers want to see that you are confident and have the emotional maturity required to value feedback and criticism as growth opportunities and valuable insights into your development, even when it is unsolicited. Reacting to criticism positively and learning what you can from it shows that you'll seize every opportunity to advance your career.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

10. Do you feel supported by your family and friends in your pursuit of a career in dental medicine?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers want to know that you would have the support required to sustain you through your heavy and challenging dental school workload and sustain your commitment through graduation emotionally and financially. Additionally, if members of your family are opposed to your pursuits in the field of dentistry, this can impede your success. There is also the aspect of financial support. Rather than focusing on these elements, focus on your family's pride in how far you've come. If someone in your family has experience in the field of dentistry, be sure to volunteer. The more things you have stacked in your favor, the more likely they will be to accept you into their programs.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"My family is incredibly proud of me for attending dental school. My father is especially keen as he graduated from the University of Colorado. 11. Share with us your experience in and feelings about handling bodily fluids as a dentist.
What You Need to Know
Your admissions interviewers need assurances that those they accept into their university are cut out for the work ahead, which means taking the good with the bad. Some less desirable aspects are unavoidable, especially in the medical field. Therefore, this question assesses how thoroughly you've explored and dedicated yourself to this career path. Assure them you are not easily intimidated or emotionally affected by the messier aspects of the job. Keep your answer simple. Exhibit your emotional stability to assure them you are cut out for the tasks ahead.

12. What are you reading right now?
What You Need to Know
Before answering, consider what you want the interviewers to know about you. Understand that whatever you are reading will be interpreted as a reflection of your interests and your reading level. Offering something at a collegiate reading level or higher will serve you better in answering this question than a young adult or MG sci-fi/fantasy or romance novel. Although there is nothing wrong with enjoying that kind of entertainment, it may not serve you well for this academic interview. Show them that you feed your mind regularly. What you offer doesn't necessarily need to be a book. It could be a paper, a study, someone else's thesis, anything.
You could score extra points by advertising you read multiple books simultaneously with ease. If you are not currently reading anything because you're devoting your attention to other priorities, share something you've recently read that impacted you. The University of Colorado states on their website that they value those who are "critical thinkers and lifelong learners." Consider this when formulating your answer.

Feel free to discuss any awards, recognition, or accolades you may have received. Before choosing your example, consider how you'd present your skills or talents. 14. Tell us about an area of growth you would like to overcome while attending University of Colorado.
What You Need to Know
They state in their competency statements, "Use self-evaluative skills to assess individual knowledge and abilities, to practice within the scope of one's competence and make appropriate professional referrals, and to identify areas of deficiency to correct through lifelong learning." In summary, they want to ensure the students they accept into their program exhibit the emotional intelligence to be self-aware, hold themselves accountable for their actions, identify their weaknesses, and learn from them while striving for self-growth.
So, rather than picking a weakness that's a core skill required for a dentistry student, consider something that has stood in your way and held you back from furthering your development. Recognizing an area you could improve upon while developing an action plan for improving on this weakness is the aim here.

This question is an icebreaker. It's intended to lower your guard and get you to open up, offering the interviewer insight into your passions, hobbies, and interests. The interviewers would like to know you apart from what is written on your CV and school transcripts. They want to get to know you and the strength of your character. 17. How would you distinguish yourself from the other students who are equally qualified and vying for the same opportunity?
What You Need to Know
Some will stop at nothing to further their career pursuits. You shouldn't be concerned about the competition. You can't speak to their merits, and you can't compare yourself to those you don't know. All you can do is confidently advertise your unique talents and traits. It is easy to compare students' academic accomplishments, but often a person's motivation is the key to their success. This boils down to one's attitude and approach. Consider what you attribute your success to and what intangible unique qualities and qualifying statements you can offer that set you apart.

18. What qualities, above all others, should a dentist embody?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers want to see that you have some insight into a successful dentist's desired qualities and characteristics. Their website states, "For more than 40 years, CU Dental has been educating competent and compassionate dentists." You can see that competence and compassion are two qualities they readily embrace in this statement. Other key phrases they include are a "strong emphasis on clinical experience" and "values to practice dentistry as critical thinkers and lifelong learners, dedicated to fulfilling the public's trust."
Before any interview, spend ample time exploring the website and familiarizing yourself with the university's keywords, key phrases, and branding. Don't limit yourself to the Dental School either; explore all the pages of the Anschutz Medical Campus. Align your values with theirs to advertise you've put in the work and that your values are aligned.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I believe that the most important quality for a dentist to possess is integrity. A dentist with integrity will always put their patients' needs before their financial interests. They will treat their support staff respectfully and dedicate themselves to improving their craft. Integrity is essential, so I am actively working on increasing my integrity level in various personal and professional situations. I show integrity by keeping my appointments and commitments and fulfilling my promises."
Written by Rachelle Enns on August 18th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I believe a dentist should possess empathy, above and beyond all other attributes, as this will carry any provider throughout their career with the right directives. Without understanding my patients' concerns and complaints, I would be doing them a significant disservice by simply providing 'textbook treatment.' I have already built my empathy skills by taking on volunteer experiences outside my comfort zone and carefully examining any unconscious bias I may possess."

19. Is it your goal to own your own dental practice? What appeals to you most about running your own business?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer wants to know about your plans and if you have intentions of joining an existing practice or starting your own. After thoroughly exploring their website, you'll learn the university has pride in their Advanced Clinical Training Service Program (ACTS). "After the ACTS experience, students say while they were previously committed to participating in private practice after graduation, the ACTS Program changed their thinking, and they want to give back in different ways. More than 40 percent of the community-based preceptors in these underserved urban and rural community health center dental clinics are CU alumni and graduates of the ACTS Program."
Whatever your goals, discuss where your interests lie, where you hope to take your career, and express that you have no idea where your educational journey may take you and that you are open to the wide range of unexplored possibilities that lie ahead. Express your knowledge of their programs and what they have to offer. This will display your emotional maturity and that your career plan is flexible.

20. What are your plans to improve the dental profession?
What You Need to Know
Your admissions interviewers want to see evidence that you plan on making a positive and lasting impact on the dental profession. Their university places a lot of emphasis on research and innovation through integrative health care. As stated by Denise Kassebaum, DDS, MS, Professor, and Dean, "The School of Dental Medicine believes dental health is critical to overall health, and we are dedicated to integrating dentistry and the other health professions through our innovative educational programs, real-world research, exceptional patient care, and life-changing community outreach initiatives. Believing that there should not be a distinction between dental and systemic health, the SDM emphasizes our intention to integrate 'dental' to improve health."
They also state on their website, "The University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine (CU SDM), a collaborative partner on the Anschutz Medical Campus, is a diverse learning, clinical care, and research community. The CU SDM is committed to integrated health that innovates, treats and discovers for the well-being of and in service to local and global communities."
Perform your research on the university and yourself to study and determine how your values align in every way, and take note of your shared values and vision. This is necessary to provide a specific and memorable response. Share your passion and enthusiasm for how you intend to improve the dental profession while using your skills for the greater good.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I have chosen to become a dentist because of the broad impact I can make on my patients, their families, and my community. Being a dentist is a career where I can impact others by getting to know my patients better than most healthcare providers can. I say this because the mouth and the state of one's mouth have an incredible influence on someone's confidence level. The mouth also impacts many health aspects, including how and what someone eats and drinks, their sleep quality, and even how they talk. I will improve the profession by bringing this whole-health knowledge and mindset to my patients. When my patients feel motivated and empowered to take their entire health into their hands, it will create a trickle-down effect on other aspects of their lives, including their family members' well-being. This ripple will help create greater respect for oral health care, improving how the public views our profession and how often a patient visits the dentist."

21. What are your thoughts and opinions on cases of medical malpractice in the dentistry field, and what is your plan to avoid being in a similar situation?
What You Need to Know
Again, always perform thorough research before any interview. The more informed you appear in all things related to your field, the more successful your interview will be. Appearances are everything and are a reflection of your professionalism. For example, approximately 8% of all medical malpractice trials involve dentists. The largest number of medical malpractice claims were issued for private practices, where the most commonly reported allegation was a failure to diagnose.
There are a wide variety of other statistics surrounding this, which is why Colorado University School of Dental Medicine states on their website, "The School of Dental Medicine will provide contemporary educational programs that prepare general dentists and dental specialists with the knowledge, skills, and values to practice dentistry as critical thinkers and lifelong learners, dedicated to fulfilling the public's trust."
Educate yourself on these issues and statistics, and express how you look forward to your education at university to help you more effectively navigate this nuanced terrain.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"Yes, I am aware of malpractice cases in dentistry, and it can be disheartening to hear them sometimes. Although I would be diligent with my best work, there are no guarantees, and mistakes do happen. If I faced a situation like that, I would take full responsibility for my part in the situation but would defend my expertise and decision-making skills. The best thing any medical professional can do is to try their best every day, document very well, and only work with patients that you trust."

28. How do you feel about the DAT score you received, and can you share that score with us?
What You Need to Know
If you are interested in or are pursuing their Doctor of Dental Surgery program, you should familiarize yourself with the application requirements. As stated on their website, "Applicants are required to complete the Dental Admissions Test (DAT), which is administered by the American Dental Association (ADA). Official DAT scores must be sent to AADSAS. While there is no minimum or cutoff, DAT scores close to the averages of the most recent entering class are considered competitive. See Class Profile for the most current scores. The DAT should either be taken before application or in June/July of the application year. Scores must be received before the application deadline of October 15th. To meet this deadline, tests should not be taken after August 31st of the application year."
If you've already taken your DAT (Dental Admission Test) and passed, tell the interviewer your score. If you are interested in pursuing this program further down the line, share your interest and knowledge of the Dental Admission Test, and your plans for taking it, and when. Most students take their DAT exam in the spring of their junior year of undergrad study or the summer between their junior and senior years.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I scored 22 in my DAT, which landed me in the 98th percentile for DAT scoring. I am thrilled with this score since I studied hard and felt that I was rewarded for my diligence."

29. What would you consider the most pressing issue facing the dental industry today?
What You Need to Know
Being an aspiring dental student means taking a keen interest in current events by closely following the challenges the dental industry faces. The interviewers want to see that your interest is deep and that you spend time learning and understanding the challenges you will face in your future career as a dentist or dental specialist.
Discuss what you feel to be a primary issue in the dental industry. You can also ask the interviewers what they see as the most concerning issue in the dental field today. This question is an opportunity to start a very insightful conversation.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022

30. What would you consider the primary challenges dentistry will face in the near future?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers are interested in how proactive you are in keeping current on dentistry news. They are looking for assurances that you're thinking ahead on what the future of your profession looks like and if you will continue to adapt to ensure the longevity of your career.
Rather than ending on a 'doom and gloom' tone, offer some positive statements regarding your hope for the industry and how you plan to make a positive impact as a future dentist. For example, a few articles detail that future monitoring of dental health will be simplified with SMART toothbrushes - Bluetooth devices that connect to an app. Explore the future of dental innovations and how they may impact your career in the future.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I have spent a lot of time watching roundtable videos, reading journals on the future of dentistry, and diving into blogs related to the challenges dentists expect to face. The top issues include the aging population and the demand it will put on the dental industry, particularly for aesthetic treatments. This demand will increase the expectation to possess the newest and best technology and fully train their teams on these advancements. Still, the expenses associated with this are put primarily on the dentist. Also, with this fast and continuous change in dental tech, dentists will need to focus on continued education, again incurring significant expenses. I was speaking with my dentist not long ago, and she estimates that, since becoming a dentist, she has invested at least $100,000 in continued education. In the future, I would love to see dentists gain access to more affordable options to continue educating themselves on the latest industry techniques. Further partnerships with the companies manufacturing this tech would benefit the dentist, the manufacturer, and the patient. Overall, I feel positive, knowing that our industry is ever-evolving. If we can find a way to make these changes financially sustainable for medical professionals, that would be the ideal situation."

31. Share your approach to preparing and studying for exams.
What You Need to Know
The greater your academic performance, the better the university's metrics will be. For this reason, the interviewers want to choose dental school students who will be diligent in their studies and perform well on exams. This question is an opportunity to highlight the aspects of your work style that have greatly benefited you in the past. They are assessing how sustainable your methods will be. Your response should inform your admission interviewer how adaptable you will be to the challenges ahead. Know the basics of what the program you hope to enter looks like. Highlight your strengths, your flexibility, and your track record for success. Describe your systems approach to your studies and how this has helped you get this far. Showcase your adaptability, resourcefulness, and emotional maturity.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I am a well-organized student and have a plan that works well for me. When I prepare for a specific exam, I map out the content I need to learn and divide that content over the number of days I have available to prepare. When I create a study calendar, I leave the final three days leading up to the exam to review the entire library of content. I am a big fan of study aids, as I believe they work much better than simply reading and re-reading the materials. Aids such as flashcards are also much more helpful to me than highlighting my notes. I also create practice problems and, when possible, will pair up with a fellow student to test each other in written form or verbal lightning rounds. My approach has been successful so far as reflected in my overall GPA."

32. Manual dexterity is one of many skills a dentist is required to possess. How do you plan to improve in this regard?
What You Need to Know
The ability to work with precision on an extremely small scale is an integral aspect of performing dental procedures. This requires above-average hand-eye coordination. This is critical to ensuring the safety of your patients and avoiding unnecessary medical malpractice suits. Your manual dexterity will be critical to your success as a dentist.
If you've taken your DAT, share your dexterity score. If you haven't taken it yet, share any relevant praise, comments, or notable mentions you've had in this regard. Validate the question by exhibiting your clear understanding of the expectations surrounding these points.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"I have excellent manual dexterity as well as good hand-eye coordination. I have played the piano from the age of four and believe this training helped me develop the dexterity needed from a very young age. Of course, as a dentist, I must continue to develop my dexterity. To keep training myself, I have recently taken up drawing and plan to teach myself to cross-stitch. I thoroughly enjoy working with my hands and am eager to apply this enjoyment to my work as a dental professional."

33. How do you feel COVID-19 has impacted the dentistry profession over the last couple of years?
What You Need to Know
Before your interview, fully verse yourself on the latest standards, procedures, and regulatory changes in the dental industry due to viral concerns. Because COVID-19 is transmissible through respiratory droplets, the risk of viral exposure is elevated among dentists, putting them at risk. Patients are the primary source of infection for dentists.
Mask wearing for patients is not a viable option since their mouth needs to be open for their procedures, putting dentists at direct risk of close exposure. The rules and procedures for dentists to wear protective gear only make performing their job more difficult. Additional steps for disinfection and higher standards for changing tools add significant time to each appointment, leaving less room for the number of patients to be treated in a day. All of these equates to a lower number of patients and higher expenses while generating significantly less income.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"COVID-19 and other pandemics have left a significant impact on the dentistry profession, including how we treat patients, the increased demand for clean air technology in dental offices, the increased demand and risk put on support staff, and PPE supply and demand. One significant impact that has interested me most is how we will triage patients, ranking their needs from elective care to urgent care to emergency care. For instance, during the COVID-19 quarantine time, when most dentists shut down and stopped offering regular cleanings and general care, many practices were forced to determine better what qualified a patient for acute care. I look forward to learning about the long-term impact as I dive deeper into the dentistry profession."

34. What’s your approach to overcoming academic difficulties?
What You Need to Know
It is rarely possible to plan for the difficulties we may face. However, being flexible in your approach and being able to adapt your priorities accordingly should be the aim of your answer. Every dental student faces academic challenges. When suffering a setback, it is essential to not allow your emotions or stress to get the best of you and dictate your behavior and responses. Your admissions interviewer is looking for assurances that you will handle these difficulties with as much emotional intelligence and poise as possible. Discuss your approach in detail and how it has benefitted you in the past.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 18th, 2022
Answer Example
"When I encountered academic difficulty in the past, I recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which improved my grade. Should I face difficulties while attending dental school, I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance."

Showcase your emotional maturity and approach to remaining grounded in this challenging and rewarding chapter in your life. Offer your clear understanding of what it means to possibly relocate to a new city while creating a balance between your studies and your personal life as well. "I have formed a three-pronged plan to tackle the stressors that may come up for me during dental school. These three approaches will address my academic stress, the emotional strain of adjusting to my new surroundings as I relocate, and the financial strain I will experience due to paying for dental school. For academic stress, I plan to create a study schedule that I will stick to closely. I will join study groups to help me gain a broader perspective from others, and I have made arrangements for a part-time tutor if needed. For the strain that will result from uprooting myself, I have planned to join a couple of university clubs to get to know other students and make new friends, avoiding feelings of loneliness. I also plan to Facetime my family every week to prevent myself from feeling homesick. I have come to terms with the reality of the financial expectations of becoming a dentist. I have created a solid financial plan to pay back my loans, and I enlisted a financial advisor to help me create a student budget that I will adhere to closely. I feel well-prepared to cope with and address the immense workload and other expectations ahead of me as a dental school student."

40. What kind of financial plans have you explored or lined up to address our tuition costs and costs of living while attending university?
What You Need to Know
Many medical students imagine a lucrative lifestyle beyond college after they start generating their anticipated income, which they anticipate medical career generating. But many fail to incorporate how their obligations to their debts significantly impact their imagined profitability.
Additionally, most aspiring dentists imagine themselves opening a private practice of their own, yet starting your own brick-and-mortar business often requires accruing more debt and, in many ways, proves to be a costly and burdensome endeavor in its own right. This includes the initial investment for their medical instruments, machines, and staff. Those financial burdens can lead to stress, mental health issues, and issues with job dissatisfaction.
The first part of answering this question should involve your understanding of the financial aspects you'll face in your career and your plan to proactively address these. Incorporating this into your career plan will show you've thought these through and are dedicated to your career pursuits.
Additionally, show them that you've thoroughly explored their financial assistance options, and after sharing the extent of your knowledge, feel free to ask them for their insights or any other information they have to offer to help you along.
