1. At Officeworks we like to hire strong achievers. Give me an example of a time when you went above and beyond.
How to Answer
You'll be learning a lot from day 1 with our learning pathways for your first 30, 60, and 90 days, so we need to know that you're capable of going with the flow and absorbing a lot of new information. At Officeworks, we use stretch targets when we're setting our objectives, and we encourage our Team Members to be proactive in driving the creation of value in our business. Talk to the interviewer about any times you've embodied this spirit of high achieving at work, whether it was going out of your way for a customer or taking responsibility for a major project.
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I was recently cleaning up a section of the store where I currently work when a customer came into my section with three small kids who were all screaming and crying. He looked totally overwhelmed! I smiled and greeted him, then I asked if his kids might enjoy something to keep them occupied -- we keep coloring books and crayons in the break room for just this kind of situation. He looked so grateful and relieved, so I went and grabbed the coloring supplies, told my manager the situation, and sat on the floor with the kids for about fifteen minutes while the customer finished up his shopping. It was a small thing for me to do, but I know it made a huge impact on his day. That's what customer service really means to me: finding small opportunities to make big impacts."
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Just yesterday I had a customer make a purchase, and I noticed that she was struggling with her bags. She had a stroller, a couple of kids, and a lot of bags to carry. I offered to help her out to her car, and she gratefully accepted. It felt excellent to go above the call of duty that day."

2. How do you handle situations that could cause you to be late or miss work?
How to Answer
Proper planning will get you far, but sometimes life happens, and you'll need a plan B. Think about some of the variables in your life that could affect your ability to arrive on time for work. Sick children, traffic, car breakdowns... the list goes on. It may not be possible for everything to work out so smoothly, getting your shift covered or still making it to work on time. Your interviewer is looking to see that you are proactive and that you can handle the stress of unexpected situations that can arise.
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"I stay calm and composed when issues arise. My dad got rear ended one time when driving me to school. I texted my friend to see if she could tell my teacher what happened. I explained the situation to my teacher when I got to class. If this happened on my way to work, I would call ahead of time to ensure someone could cover my shift."
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"I hope never to be late! When I started working at a restaurant at sixteen years old, we were taught the adage of 'if you're on time, you're late,' so I've worked to implement that into my life. I always try to arrive 15 minutes early, but there are unforeseen circumstances that can arise. I handle surprises using common sense and keeping courtesy to others top of mind."

I don't enjoy mundanity; I like every day to feel fresh, new, and exciting in an environment where I'm surrounded by people and lots of things to do."

"When I first started at my current job, I noticed that the waste levels were through the roof, and we didn't have a system in place for responsible reusing or recycling. At home, I did some research about recycling programs in our area and then came up with an idea about how I could get my coworkers involved in volunteering to sort recyclables during work. I set up a point system with a small prize for those with the most points at the end of a quarter. I took my plan to my manager, and she was thrilled. 28. We have a strong employee honesty program in place at Officeworks to prevent loss. What would you do if you discovered that a co-worker was stealing product or money?
How to Answer
Officeworks is stocked with a variety of office items, from pens and pencils to expensive electronics. We work hard to screen our Team Member candidates for signs of unethical behavior, but some employees may be tempted to steal cash or merchandise. Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018

"My reaction to employee theft would differ if I were a retail associate or a retail manager. If I were a manager and caught an employee stealing, I would terminate them immediately. If I were an associate, I would report the incident according to company protocol. I would avoid approaching the employee as I would not want to make it a personal issue."

29. At Officeworks we have a very clear return policy. How would you handle a customer who was arguing with you about a potential return?
How to Answer
We aim to deliver our customers the very best products at everyday low prices with our Price Beat Guarantee. We understand that customers need to return purchases from us, and we want to make the returns process as simple and easy as possible. How would you talk to a customer who was upset about a return they wanted to make that didn't meet our return policy guidelines?
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
1st Answer Example
"If a customer came into the store and tried to return an unapproved item -- like software, prepaid business services, gift cards, or special orders -- I would be calm and patient with them and explain the company's reasoning for their policies. I think the policy is straightforward enough, and hopefully the customer would understand the issue with the return after some explanation. If things began to escalate, I would consult with my manager to see if I could offer the customer a small 'peace-offering,' such as a small merchandise card or discount offer."
Written by Jordan Henry on August 19th, 2018
2nd Answer Example
"Return policies are meant to be followed; however, there may be some exceptions allowed from time to time. I feel that having a satisfied customer is most important and sometimes refusing a return is not worth the bad word of mouth or risk of negative online review. There is a fine balance between being accommodating and being a pushover. If I were unsure of the best decision, I would ask my supervisor for clarification."
