Prior to your interview with Microsoft, it is important that you understand that you will be working closely with teams from other departments within the organization. Your ability to work with cross-functional teams will be a significant asset to Microsoft and your interviewer will be looking to hear that you will bring this ability. Ideally, they'll be looking to hear about any prior experience you have in working with colleagues from different departments and different levels of an organization. As you answer, your interviewer will be keying into your ability to communicate effectively, build trust and handle conflict.

"Exposure to cross-functional teamwork in my current position is widespread. I believe that when expectations are communicated clearly from the beginning, a cross-functional team project can be very successful. I go into these types of projects with an understanding that everyone has their strengths and limitations based on their expertise and job function. When I collaborate with people that I don't usually collaborate with on the job, I quickly look to build trust with my ability to do what I say and say what I do at all times."

Amanda's Feedback
You clearly have experience working in a collaborative environment. Give the interviewer more insight into your ability to work cross-functionally by talking about how you build trusting, productive relationships, how you communicate or discuss project needs, and how you work together with others to overcome obstacles. If possible, share an example of a time when you worked cross-functionally to accomplish a goal. This would be a good opportunity to use the STAR method. Share a Situation that had a positive outcome. Describe the specific Task you were supposed to accomplish as a group. Tell about the Action you took to overcome a challenge and complete the task. Finally, share the Result and how you contributed to the successful outcome.
