"As a phlebotomist, I see patients all over the clinic or hospital and no matter where I see them, my task of drawing blood often puts them in an uncomfortable spot. To help my interactions with each patient, I bring a friendly approach with a smile on my face while using the AIDET approach with each person. This allows the patient to know who I am and what I will be doing and helps them relax and open up to me. By reading their chart prior to our interaction, I am able to put a personal touch on what I am doing and help set realistic expectation for them and I know that the patients that I draw on are appreciative of this fact. Knowing that most patients aren't well versed in medical terminology, I always speak in layman's terms to them so they truly understand what I am doing and why I am doing it. Even though my interactions with patients are usually short, my respectful approach can have a great impact on them."

"In the world of Physical Therapy, showing respect for patients comes in many ways but always boils down to meeting their needs in a safe and efficient manner. To do this, I first must gain the trust of my patients by listening to their needs attentively and responding to those needs with action. On my end, I say what I am going to do and I follow through with actions to help build the trust of my patients. As our work relationship progresses, I take the time to get to know my patients to take a personal and respectful approach to their therapy. This helps further garner trust and a feeling of mutual respect between us. I don't see patient as a number, I see them as a unique individual that needs my care and this is the foundation of a respectful relationship for us."
