"A person who is in a state of panic can generally be calmed down through conversation and distraction. If a British Airways passenger were experiencing an anxiety attack, I would insist that they focus on a conversation with me. Other techniques could include having them close their eyes, take deep breaths, and count to 100 and backward again."

"I always start with establishing a relationship with the passenger. I make eye contact and ask them for their name. I share my name and then ask them to describe what they are feeling. I then offer some common techniques that work to help soothe the anxiety. Finally, I ask one of the passengers nearby if they would be willing to press the call button in the event the passenger needs additional help.
Things can escalate very quickly when someone is panicking. Having someone close to alert me to an issue has proven to be an excellent method to help me manage this type of situation while also working to ensure the safety and comfort of the other passengers I am responsible for. It also seems to help the person with anxiety to know that there are several people around them who care and are watching over them during a difficult time."
