The easiest way to prepare for this question is to think about a challenging or daunting scenario from your recent past and what techniques you used to motivate yourself. You may have been motivated by purpose, the thrill of the situation, service to others, recognition for a job well done, reward, or the achievement of a specific milestone.

There are two keys to answering this question. First, keep your answer brief. Your time in an interview is limited and questions like these are utilized by your interviewer to get a general sense of your personality and how you are best motivated in the workplace. You want to save your detailed answers for questions that highlight your experience and skills.

Second, provide an answer that is authentic, business-appropriate, and makes sense for the university administrator role. For example, an interviewer may have reservations about a candidate that indicates that they are best motivated when they are in charge in the workplace. University administrators typically work in service to others and do not always lead or manage. Interviewers are most likely to hire candidates who will be properly motivated and are likely to enjoy working as a university administrator.
