3. How do you react when you encounter academic difficulty?
How to Answer
As a medical student at TouroCOM, you will encounter academic challenges. Everyone does, so it's important to know that you are not alone when you experience difficulties during your studies. The admissions team wants evidence that you will handle these difficulties with poise and emotional intelligence.
Think about the ways you react when you encounter challenges in your studies. Perhaps you reach out to other students for help or put together a study group to ensure you and your peers have the support needed to succeed. Maybe you have one-on-one conversations with your professors to seek extra assistance, or perhaps you engage a tutor to help you better understand the material.
Talk to the admissions team about your approach to overcoming academic challenges. Express how your methods have benefitted you in the past, and connect why you believe your strategy will ensure your success at Touro COM.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"When I have encountered academic difficulty in the past, I have recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I will either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which helped my grades greatly. Should I encounter difficulties while attending TouroCOM, I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance."

4. Describe a time when you received criticism. How did you react?
How to Answer
There is a way to positively and maturely accept criticism, even when it is unsolicited. The admissions team at TouroCOM wants to see that you are confident and mature enough to take criticism and learn from the situation rather than become defensive.
Because this behavioral-based question asks you to 'describe a time when...' it's best to form a story-based answer using the STAR framework. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, Result. Think of a time when you received criticism from a boss, co-worker, professor, or peer. Then, tell a story that shows the admissions team that you can take criticism and learn from the situation. Be sure to express what you learned from the situation.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"I welcome constructive criticism and feedback because it allows me to tailor my approach and become better at my work. (Situation & Task) One day I was criticized by a nurse after she saw me place an IV in the patient's accessory cephalic vein near the elbow. She explained that it isn't convenient for patients in labor because they tend to tense and stop the flow of the IV. (Action) I asked her which areas she felt were best for the IV, and she taught me. Since then, I have avoided the AC veins when placing IVs in labor and delivery patients. (Result) Had I become defensive, I would not have learned a better way. I am committed to receiving critical feedback, which is important to improving and growing as a physician."

I chose to become a medical professional because of the broad impact I can make on my patients, their families, and my underserved community. As a practitioner, I will improve the profession by bringing whole-health knowledge and mindset to my patients. The school is committed to increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in medicine and training osteopathic physicians to practice medicine in underserved communities. This mission is incredibly important to me and one of the reasons I applied. I visited the campus in Middletown last year and greatly enjoyed the feel of the campus. I also understand that the school boasts state-of-the-art labs, another competitive advantage of TouroCOM. In addition to these impressive factors, TouroCOM has excellent COMLEX pass and match rates. In 2021 TouroCOM Harlem scored #1 in the US among Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine on the First Pass Rate of COMLEX-USA Level 1, which is an incredible accomplishment! Overall, I genuinely appreciate the effort that TouroCOM puts out when it comes to residencies and placements for its medical school graduates. 10. Talk about one issue the medical industry faces today and what you believe could improve the pain point.
How to Answer
The admissions team at TouroCOM wants to see that your interest in the medical industry and related news is deep. It's essential to show that you spend time learning and understanding the challenges you will face in your future career as a medical professional.
As an aspiring medical student, you should take a keen interest in current events that will impact your education and future career. Be prepared to discuss one concerning issue in the medical industry and come up with a potential solution or suggestion to alleviate the problem. If the interview vibe allows, this question could present an opportunity to start a very insightful conversation. Read the room and, if it feels acceptable, consider asking the admissions interviewer a similar question in return.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"One concerning issue in the medical industry is the continual rise of drug prices. The best medications should be accessible to anyone, regardless of financial or social status. There has been a rising concern with big pharma creating drugs and pricing them so high that they are unattainable to most uninsured people. I have been reading about strategies to make pharmaceutical drugs and specific therapies accessible and affordable to everyone. One resource I found particularly interesting was a 2018 release by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine called 'Making Medicines Affordable: A National Imperative.' This publication outlined that the US is facing increased challenges in controlling the rise of health care costs. The cost of prescription drugs and biopharmaceuticals is a major socio-economic concern. The research outlines that drug affordability relies on numerous complex factors and not just the price of the drugs. Other factors to consider are a person's insurance coverage and how many medical conditions they are treating. Considering all of these components, and after reading this research in detail, I believe we could start by changing insurance policies and their structure, particularly around drug access. Placing additional focus on innovation in drug development could also help alleviate the pain point since that could prevent the drug shortages that cause inflating drug prices."

11. What are your thoughts on alternative medicine? Which aspects do you agree and disagree with?
How to Answer
Alternative medicine can be a controversial subject. Some healthcare professionals love it, some are highly skeptical, and some people's opinions land in the middle.
Just like you would answer a sensitive question surrounding politics or religion, it's best to support both sides in some aspect when delivering your response. If you plan to voice a highly one-sided opinion, be prepared to give substantial evidence-based thoughts supporting your viewpoint.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"Although I am a supporter of traditional medicine, I do understand that alternative medicine can offer great benefits for some. I agree that there is a science behind alternative medicine; however, alternative medicine should be more strictly regulated. People need to educate themselves better before jumping into 'all-natural' therapy. Prescribed teas and herbs can be dangerous if taken in the wrong dosages. Even though it is natural, it doesn't mean that your body will like it. Just like with all types of medicine and practices, research and education are very important."

12. Share your thoughts on animal research and animal testing in the medical field.
How to Answer
The admissions team would like to know your stance on the controversial subject of animal testing and the use of animals for educational purposes. In many regions, animals are still a standard learning modality for medical students. Breakthroughs and cures are found regularly, often through animal testing and research procedures. However, with technology changing rapidly, incredible leaps are being made to replace the use of animals in medical research.
Plan an answer that is honest and true to your feelings while showing your understanding of why the use of animals takes place in medical research. Learning and research tools are ever-changing, so mention the progress you have seen through simulations and more.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"Although I am a supporter of animal rights, I understand that animal testing and research are still required for pharmaceutical testing and many other research platforms. For instance, in the U.S., it is the law for a pharma company to test on animals before a drug is distributed for human consumption. Will this change down the road? Yes, I believe that it will. We have seen technology take us so far in terms of simulations and more, and I feel encouraged that we will not lean on animal testing in research forever."

Perhaps you'd like to meet someone who discovered, created, or invented a medical breakthrough you greatly admire. It's also a great idea to think of an interesting question you would have for that individual if you had the opportunity to meet.

I find it fascinating that he was the first person ever to believe that disease and death were not a result of the anger of gods. I would ask him what that first conversation sounded like when he first said to others that disease is not caused by superstitious beliefs. He would have had to have faced so many roadblocks, yet, he continued to believe in his work."

Answer Example
"Giving back to my community will be a significant part of my efforts as a medical professional. I already spend a great deal of my time volunteering at Children's Hospital ABC, and I plan to continue my volunteer work long after I've completed medical school. One specific way I want to help my community is by holding free workshops every month. Each workshop will address a tough issue that my community might be facing, such as alcohol abuse, depression, or mental illness. I appreciate that TouroCOM places significant emphasis on being partners in the community. I was encouraged to discover that TouroCOM partners with hospital affiliates that target underserved communities in rural and urban areas. I am eager to become an active contributor to these efforts."

22. What is your opinion on socialized health care versus privatized health care?
How to Answer
This question might be asked as a way to start up a meaningful conversation between yourself and the admissions panel at TouroCOM. The admissions team wants to understand more about how you apply critical thinking, and they want to see that you have the ability to be diplomatic when it comes to discussing potentially controversial topics. When responding to questions about potentially controversial topics, it's best to provide a well-thought and diplomatic answer.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"I believe that the basic concepts of socialized health care and privatized health care are good by nature and speak to a range of patients. Some of my peers have expressed their love for socialized health care because, although they pay a higher tax rate, they are not caught in an expensive whirlwind when they face illness. On the other hand, privatized health care can offer significantly shorter wait times, which is very important for those with a potentially critical or debilitating illness. I believe it is important to have both options so people can choose."

25. Talk about your overall academic performance. Where have you excelled, and where could you improve?
How to Answer
The admissions team wants to know how your undergraduate program prepared you for success at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine. While attending undergraduate studies, you likely learned core skills that would be transferable to your time in med school. These skills might include:
- Academic Research
- Critical Thinking
- Group Work
- Independent Learning
- Presentation Building
- Proposal Writing
- Public Speaking
- Time Management
Discuss the areas where you have excelled academically and talk about where you have room for improvement. At the end of your response, be sure to make a connection between your academic successes and how you will apply this success to your studies at TouroCOM.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I am very proud of my achievements during my undergrad education. Those courses added so much value that I will bring to my graduate program. My best courses included X, Y, and Z. I feel that I excelled in these because they are related to the medical specialty I plan to end up in. As far as areas of improvement, I can better myself in terms of time management. I overextended myself last semester with volunteer opportunities, and my study time suffered slightly. Now that I have identified the reason behind my time management challenges, I will only see improvement, moving forward."
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"The basic sciences are the core courses for any pre-med student, and I feel that I have shown in my GPA that I am well above average in my ability to excel in these courses. However, because I have spent so much time on those courses, you will see that my liberal arts courses have taken a back-seat concerning my GPA. This result is because of the importance I have placed on my basic science courses."

During my undergrad, I steadily learned to set goals and keep myself accountable for my studies. I learned to plan my day to make the best use of time inside and outside the classroom. I also placed a lot of focus on my personal development and learned to be more forgiving to myself when I didn't perform as well as I wanted to. 28. How would you react if you discovered a classmate cheating?
How to Answer
This challenging question is meant to reveal how you deal with situations around ethics. The admissions team at TouroCOM is looking for evidence that you have the strong mind and personal character required to be a trusted medical professional.
Being a trusted medical professional may sometimes mean making uncomfortable decisions. Show the admissions team that you value honesty above all else and that you would react to cheating in a way that shows leadership and integrity.
If you have found yourself in a situation like this, you can draw on this example when you respond by telling a brief story. Of course, be careful not to name anyone outright. Instead, focus on the way you reacted and helped resolve the situation.

Answer Example
"An honorable person will do what is right even when nobody is looking. I wholeheartedly believe that the medical field should have only honorable people who do the right thing and vow to do no harm. If I were to encounter a classmate cheating, I would discreetly tell the administration, professor, or a dean to ensure the situation was dealt with quickly and with minimal disruption to others."

29. Do you think that medical students who receive federal funds should spend time practicing medicine in a less desired area as a way to give something in return?
How to Answer
When a medical student receives federal assistance through loans or grants, some may see it as an unfair advantage to have the first pick of where they practice after completing medical school. On the other hand, some argue that the best medical talent should work where they can make the most impact, regardless of any financial assistance they receive through medical school. Share your thoughts on this topic with your admissions interviewer while remaining positive and diplomatic in your response.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"Since there is a significant shortage of physicians in rural areas, students receiving federal assistance should do their part by practicing in these areas for a certain amount of time. This practice should occur in full transparency, however. For instance, the loan must be offered and accepted with the understanding that the recipient would work with underserved communities upon graduating. That said, there should be exceptions for rare specializations or medical students with highly unique or in-demand skills."

30. A woman comes into the ER after a car accident. She needs a blood transfusion but she states that her religion is against blood transfusions. What decision do you make?
How to Answer
You may not be able to answer this question entirely correctly as there are many policies and legal requirements that you may not even know about yet. Answer to the best of your ability by displaying that you would make the soundest choice possible while maintaining the patient's integrity. Overall, the admissions team at Touro College would like to know if you are ready to face tough decisions while maintaining the integrity and code of ethics expected of you as a physician.
Written by Rachelle Enns on June 26th, 2022
Answer Example
"From what I understand, if the patient is of sound mind and they understand the risk they are taking by refusing medical assistance, I do not have the right to override her religious choice. Many factors could change this, such as an unconscious patient, someone under the influence of a narcotic, or perhaps if the person and I had a significant language barrier. In these situations, I should refer to my facilities' leaders and ethics community. This is a decision I would not feel comfortable making entirely on my own."
