Question 3 of 40

How do you respond to feedback and criticism? Describe a situation where your work was criticized. What was your immediate reaction?

"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I could do. It was a compliment and a challenge rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more gusto and passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

As a dental student at Nova Southeastern University, your classwork and work in clinical rotations will be highly scrutinized. It's important to note that not all feedback will be delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. The interviewers want to see that you are confident and mature enough to accept feedback and criticism positively, even when it is unsolicited, as a student in their program.

      How to Answer

Think of a time you received feedback or criticism that was hurtful or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively and didn't take it personally. Demonstrate that you took the criticism and learned from it. Talk about how you successfully implemented a change to show that you will take this same approach at Nova Southeastern University's College of Dental Medicine.

"I handle criticism very well. I try to use it to minimize repeating the same mistakes. Also, I have done the same in my current job. I talk to my supervisor monthly to highlight my mistakes to avoid them and improve my work."

      Rachelle's Feedback

It seems that you have a good plan in place to take feedback and implement improvements. The final two sentences of this question are asking for a specific answer ('describe a time...'), so be sure to address this more directly. I recommend using the STAR method when organizing and telling your story. I have provided a starter, below.
"I handle criticism very well, and I try to use it to minimize the repetition of mistakes. For instance, in my current job...(give a story by describing the overall situation, what your task was, what action you took to improve, and the final result)."
