"I am most proud of the volunteer experiences that I gained over the years. My parents have always taught my sisters and I to give back to the community and utilize our skills towards making the world better than we found it. So I try to be very conscientious of that. In high school, when my teacher approached me to be an after-school mentor for students struggling to keep up in class, I jumped at the opportunity. I also started volunteering at local places such as a small bookstore struggling to stay open due to a shortage in staff, at a church where they offered homeless individuals hot meals and a place to stay during the holiday season, and then I started volunteering at a hospital where I received very important foundational knowledge of the impact compassion can have on an individual struggling with their health. I eventually started volunteering at an ER where I got to interact with physicians, PAs, and nurses from various specialties as well as play a small role in family and patient-centered care. For a couple of semesters during my undergrad years, I volunteered at an Autism Outreach organization where I was able to interact and learn from autistic children of all ages. I have learned just how unique each child is. Working with these kids each day, they have helped me grow personally and professionally. I am able to apply that understanding when working with kids in the pediatrics unit at the hospital. My volunteer experiences have made me a more compassionate and reliable individual both in and beyond the healthcare setting."

"I worked hard in my early education which allowed me to attend Utah Tech University with a full tuition scholarship for 4 years. This allowed me to obtain my undergraduate degree without any debt. I worked hard in the four years it took to get my degree. I worked a part-time job along with my schooling. Despite working while going to school I was able to graduate college with honors. I had the opportunity to interview for the Dixie 11 award, which is awarded to the top 11 graduates. I was among 200 to apply for the scholarship and was chosen among 26 graduates to interview. How to Answer

Feedback will not always come gently. When that happens, we can feel criticized. Then, it's easy for human nature to take over and for us to become defensive. Midwestern University's PA Program Admissions Committee wants to know that you can accept feedback or criticism productively and with maturity.

This behavioral-based question asks you to describe a time when you received feedback or criticism and outline how you responded. Consider forming your story-based answer using the STAR framework. STAR is an acronym for Situation, Task, Action, Result.

Remember, it's important to highlight that you were able to take the criticism and learn from the situation. You can achieve this by speaking in detail about how you implemented change after becoming aware of the criticism.

"I think feedback and constructive criticism are very important for growth and improvement. I always try to be reflective and mindful of the nature of feedback, which is meant for the achievement of a shared goal in a professional setting, so I often respond with curiosity and ask for specifics in order to improve myself. Alongside my NA job, I currently work as a substitute/paraprofessional at a school due to a staff shortage, I had to learn a lot of things on the job through experience rather than getting full training beforehand. There was once a situation where a student used foul language when communicating with one of her peers and the steps that I took were pulling them aside and privately talking to both students. I lead the conversation towards making the student realize her mistake and helping her understand the hurtful nature of her remark. She apologized to her peer and I made sure that they both had a dialogue where both students were comfortable with each other. I got a phone call from the principal after a student mentioned this incident to her and I was notified that this is considered a serious offense at the school and that the principal should have been notified according to a guideline that should have been sent to me. I respectfully told her that I have never received any such guidelines, however, would like to set up a meeting with her to ensure that I take the proper steps in the future. She was happy to set up a meeting and ensured me that she would make sure that she emails me the documents regarding those guidelines."

"In the final semester of my undergraduate, I was taking a lab for Biostatistics. We were put into groups and in our group, we had to think of an experiment that we could perform throughout the semester. We chose to do our experiment on the effects of spices on the growth of bacteria. The experiment took about a week and we thought we had gotten some data from it. We made our report and felt confident that it was worthy of a good grade. We submitted it early for feedback in case we needed to make changes. The professor reached out and told us that we did not have enough data and that we would need to do the experiment again and that our report needed a lot of work. This was tough to hear, but we were glad that we got the feedback sooner than later. I was able to take this criticism and learn from it. I was able to take a deeper look at our experiment and report and found the flaws it had. This helped me be able to take a better look at reports I was doing for other classes as well. Criticism is vital to learning and growing to become a better student and employee."

"Working as a Patient care tech on the Cardiovascular unit, I have seen several patients with Heart Failure that we consider “frequent fliers”. "I think first it is important to be educated on these topics because they really are delicate subject matters that require some research, so I try to make sure I know some of the history behind such topics before I formulate an opinion. Like many other topics, these have advantages and disadvantages to them so it is important to shed light on both sides of the matter. Also, I believe it is important to give our opinions in a respectful and mindful way because I think one of the reasons that they are labeled controversial is because people tend to turn them into a matter of argument when it doesn't have to be. They can and should be topics that are spoken about calmly. According to research, people in the US don't visit doctors as often as people in other countries, yet we end up paying way more compared to those countries. "I would love to meet Rosalind Franklin. I first learned about her from my biology professor, whose passion for Rosalind's legacy rubbed off on me. Rosalind was the scientist who took photograph 51 showing the DNA structure, which eventually lead scientists Watson and Crick to propose the double-helical structure of DNA. Rosalind also determined the first-ever detailed structure of a virus. "Through my work experience as a patient care tech, I have had many experiences that involved blood and many other bodily fluids. There was a situation where a confused patient had pulled out their IV. They were bleeding a lot due to the Heparin that they had running. I immediately began holding pressure on the site and called the designated nurse for assistance so that they could get another IV placed so that the heparin could be restarted. Due to the quick action taken, there was no further harm to the patient, we were able to get them cleaned up and get a new IV placed. Through my shadowing experience, I was also able to be in the OR and watch an Aortic Valve Replacement surgery. This surgery lasts about 3 hours and there are many sights and smells that go along with it. I was able to handle these well and never had any instances where I felt queasy. I believe that these experiences have helped prepare me to become an excellent Physician Assistant. These instances have also made it clear to me that this is the career I want to pursue."
