It is not uncommon for some med students to experience discomfort or fear of the sight of blood or handling bodily fluids. What is of concern here is how you manage and control such feelings. Answer this question honestly. If you don't have issues with handling blood and other bodily fluids, say so while exhibiting a familiarity with the safety precautions and protocol that comes with exposure. What You Need to Know
To a certain degree, a college or university needs to regard its student body as a representative of its educational institution. Therefore they'll need assurances whomever they admit will be able to uphold a certain degree of professionalism. They want to know how you navigate such controversial topics.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 22nd, 2022

9. What is your opinion on socialized health care versus privatized health care?
What You Need to Know
This question assesses your professionalism and how well you can objectively present your opinion while gauging the depth of your knowledge on this subject. What holds value here is how well you can weigh every side of this nuanced subject, i.e. how much or how little health insurance providers pay out to health care providers and institutions, which is often much lower than the contractual rate. This should be weighed against sustainable business practices, how much patients pay (premiums, copay, coinsurance, and deductibles), and who benefits most. It is fine to have your own opinion as long as it is based on well-informed facts. They want a glimpse of your critical thinking skills and ability to be diplomatic when addressing hot topics. It wouldn't hurt to appeal to both sides of the argument, but make sure you come across as educated in your approach.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I believe that the basic concepts of socialized health care and privatized health care are good by nature and speak to a range of patients. Some of my peers have expressed their love for socialized health care because, although they pay a higher tax rate, they are not caught in an expensive whirlwind when they face illness. Privatized health care, on the other hand, can offer significantly shorter wait times which is very important for those with a potentially critical or debilitating illness. I believe it is important to have options for both so people can choose."

11. What is your biggest pet peeve?

This is a chance to exemplify your high EQ and how you maturely handle annoyances or distractions. You can score extra points here if your pet peeve benefits those around you. Keep an even tone with open body language, and highlight that your pet peeves don't prevent you from performing well or getting on with your studies.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Safety is a big thing with me, and a big pet peeve of mine is when others don't follow protocol. I've noticed that this is especially prevalent with those who are disorganized. I had a dorm mate who was also a chemistry partner a while back. Not only did they not carefully store away compounds when they were done with them, which presented all sorts of hazards, but they never did the dishes, and this person was just messy. Honestly, they were lucky they had me around. But I managed it well and just picked up as I went. Oddly, they followed suit after a while. Osmosis, I guess. Otherwise, we got along great."

Exhibiting this focus and determination to improve says a lot about your character and drive. Even better if you have a clear understanding of how the program at Yale University School Of Medicine can help you get there. At the same time, use discretion. Communication
25. How important is communication as a PA?
What You Need to Know
More often than not, correctable situations occur because of miscommunication, misinterpretation, or various other circumstances that contributed to poor or uninformed decision-making or confused messaging. In a health care setting, poor communication can have devastating consequences. So, while answering this question, communicate as effectively as possible. Avoid using speech crutch words such as "like," "um," "you know," "so on and so forth," "well," "but," "so," "ah," "er," "literally," "actually," and "basically. " Practice answering without using those words. Whenever you find yourself struggling against them, pause instead. That will present you as a clearer communicator and more of a professional.
On the webpage that details their prerequisites for their PA program, they state, "Students must be able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and others in academic and healthcare settings. Students must be able to listen attentively and speak clearly, including communications with patients from different social and cultural backgrounds. Additionally, they must be able to effectively communicate in spoken, written, and electronic formats. Students must be able to identify and describe changes in mood, activity, and posture, and perceive non-verbal communication. Students must be able to record examination and diagnostic results, accurately, and efficiently using various formats, including electronic platforms."
Written by Kevin Downey on August 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"Effective and functional communication is integral to patient care. Not only do you need to communicate with the patient as effectively as possible to build their trust and expectations, but communication must be clear, both verbally and in written form, with every other facet of the team. Communication is crucial to their treatment plan and every other aspect of their care."

Communication
26. Tell me about a recent conflict you experienced and how it ended.
What You Need to Know
In a healthcare setting, you'll often encounter emotionally charged situations. This question aims to gauge your communication style, EQ, and mediation and negotiation skills. Your admissions interviewer is assessing how adept and effective you are at diplomacy and being able to deescalate a volatile situation.
As they state on their website under their admissions prerequisites, "Students must maintain the highest level of professional behavior. Students must possess and demonstrate the emotional maturity needed to participate fully in all aspects of PA training. Students must be able to exercise good judgment in all academic and patient care settings. The student must be capable of responsive, empathetic listening and must possess the sufficient interpersonal skill to develop mature, compassionate, respectful relationships with peers, patients, patient families, and all members of the academic and healthcare communities.
Students must demonstrate the ability to function effectively with composure when under stress and in uncertain, unpredictable, and physically or emotionally challenging situations. Students must be able to take responsibility for their learning, recognize limitations in their knowledge, skills, and abilities, and seek appropriate assistance when limitations are identified. Students must be able to contribute to collaborative learning, accept constructive feedback from others, and always strive toward excellence. Students must be capable of regular, reliable, and punctual attendance at all learning events and clinical assignments, understanding that this may require their presence during the day, evening, or overnight hours, and any day of the week, often with very early morning reporting times."
Consider this when formulating your answer.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 22nd, 2022
Answer Example
"I experienced this in my first year of college. I felt I wasn't fairly graded for my efforts. I advocated for myself, communicating as effectively as I could. My professor was at first stand-offish and told me to deal with it and do better next time. But I explained that I didn't understand why they graded me so egregiously on my grammar for a science-based project. After successfully communicating this point, they finally softened and explained that in the scientific community, communication, especially the written word, holds as much value as the work itself. I get that now."

What You Need to Know
This question is a self-obvious riddle that challenges your creative thinking and adaptability. It is designed to see how well you can shift gears from the traditional interview mode and how aptly you handle a challenge. The heart of these tests is frequently to test how you respond and not necessarily how quickly you can deliver an answer. For example, there's a story where a hiring manager asked a candidate, "Batman and Crabman got into a fight; who won?" The candidate asked, "Did they fight below or above water?" That answer got them the job. So, as with any question like this, it is all about communication and your analytical skills.

Answer Example
"Does the end of the question end a question mark or a period? If it is a period, then they already told you the answer. The answer to that question is, how long."

Then, examining the time I have to manage, what makes the most sense as far as preventing rework, and what work can be built off of as a foundation for the work at hand, I'll create a strategy on how to approach the work, getting a better idea of realistic time frame."
