Tell me about yourself.

"A bit about me - I love to travel, read, and conduct research. I spent the past few months traveling the world with Doctors Without Borders. It was the best experience I could have given myself, as I learned so much from seeing how the rest of the world lives. I returned to the US last month and have been actively looking for new work since I returned. I am eager to get into the routine of a career again."

      Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

      The interviewer will often ask this question at the beginning of the interview to understand how to steer the conversation. Take a few minutes to tell the interviewer a few things about yourself. You can begin with your recent education, family life, volunteer work, or talk about your travels. Bring up anything interesting and highlight your ability to be a responsible, reliable, and intelligent individual.

      Focus Your Answer On

      While you can talk a bit about your personal and family life, most interviewers want to hear in a nutshell a little about your past, present, and future. It is best to focus on describing yourself in your professional life rather than your personal. If you do talk about outside activities you enjoy, be sure those skills can be transferred to the workplace. For example, if you enjoy training for and competing in triathlons, it shows the interviewer you are dedicated and determined to stay in shape and achieve your goals.
