Working in the healthcare industry means you are in contact with vulnerable people, children, pharmaceutical drugs, drug-related equipment, confidential information, and other areas of sensitivity. You must disclose if you have a criminal record or believe you will not pass the drug test. Assure the interviewer that you are able and willing to pass a complete background check and drug test and have nothing to inform them about.

"No, there is nothing I would like to disclose. I have a clean criminal record and am happy to comply with any background check you require of me. Also, I have never used drugs, so my test will come back negative."

"No problem. I understand that it's part of the job. But I want to be up-front, I have done a full background check before, and there is a possibility you will see a charge for possession of marijuana in the check. It was several years ago, and it's no longer an issue for me because I've made significant changes in my life to pursue this career. But I don't want you to be surprised by the information. I'm happy to answer any questions you have and can assure you my drug test will be clean as I stopped using marijuana and do not use any other drugs."

If you have something in your background or will fail the drug test, describe what will be found. If you have nothing to disclose, make your answer brief while assuring the interviewer you have no criminal background and do not use drugs. Then, the interviewer can decide if they want to continue with the interview based on your response.
