1. Have you ever heard of the Memorial Hermann Health Centers for Schools Program, and what are your thoughts about healthcare services being connected to school programs?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to see if you have done a thorough research of the company and understand all of its services and programs. Then, they want to hear your opinion of healthcare services connected to school programs to ensure you will be a good fit for the team if hired.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Children in poor health, who are hungry, fearful, sad, and living in poverty, face often insurmountable barriers to learning. The Memorial Hermann Health Centers for Schools Program is designed as a medical, mental health, and dental home for uninsured children and a secondary access point for insured children, comprising ten school-based clinics and three mobile dental vans. The primary goal of the Program is to bring increased healthcare to children who otherwise will not obtain it and keep children in school where they can learn. Some of the services provided are: sick and injury care, general and sports physicals, immunizations, chronic care (asthma, obesity, cholesterol), mental health therapy and social service referrals, nutritional guidance, as well as other specific care to meet student needs. Healthcare is one thing children cannot get on their own. Share your thoughts on this approach to providing care to those who cannot seek it for themselves.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I love the idea that children can have access to quality healthcare and a chance to improve themselves. I worked at a local health unit, and the number of children I saw who suffered from poverty and lack of healthcare benefits still amazes me. If one of your school programs has an opening, I would love the opportunity to work with these children."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"The thought of so many children in society lacking proper medical care is very disheartening to me. I am so glad to know that Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital participates so actively in helping meet the medical needs of children. I think the relation of healthcare being provided through school programs is a great way to help our community's children have a chance at a better, healthier life."

2. Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital has a 118-bed Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Have you ever worked with critically ill newborns?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer asks this question to determine if you have experience working with critically ill newborns in case they need to cover shifts in the NICU. If you do not have experience, that is fine. The interviewer wants to see if this area interests you; if so, they can provide training to work in this unit.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) designated Memorial Hermann's Level IV NICU as the highest level of care available for premature and critically-ill newborns. This recognition by the Texas DSHS has made Memorial Hermann a top choice for patients seeking maternity and newborn care. Whether you have worked in neonatal intensive care or not, be sure to acknowledge the recognition the hospital has received and share whether you would like to work in NICU now or in the future.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"To be recognized as giving the highest level of care is awesome! I have never worked with critically ill newborns, but I do love babies and have often wondered if that would be an area I could contribute to. A position in the NICU is one I would certainly entertain if one is available."
Written by Darby Faubion
2nd Answer Example
"I looked at Memorial Hermann's website and read about the neonatal ICU here. The coordination of care and research is great! I did some contract work a few years ago as a travel nurse, and during that time, I spent two weeks in a NICU. Honestly, although I love babies, I don't think the NICU would be my first choice. I think my niche is more with medical surgical adults. However, that is not to say that I am unwilling to learn. Working as a travel nurse doesn't give one time to know if they could excel in a given area. I am open to any employment recommendation and will give my best wherever I am placed."

3. What part of your healthcare career brings you the most stress?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Stress in the healthcare industry can often be a regular part of the day-to-day work experience. Talk to the interviewer about which areas of your career are the most stressful. Ensure that your answer does not include a factor that would make you appear unfit for the position. (i.e., a healthcare professional should not find working with sick patients the most stressful part of the job).
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
After providing your answer of what part of your career brings you the most stress, focus on explaining how you combat that stress. It is essential in the healthcare industry to have healthy ways to decompress and relieve stress. Staff who can let the stress go are more productive and have less chance of burning out in their careers.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"The part of my career that brings me the most stress is when the schedule is running behind due to lack of hustle on mine or my team's part. I like to be on time with my schedule to ensure that our patients and clients are assisted properly. To ensure the schedule does not run behind, I have team meetings so everyone is on the same page and the workday flows smoothly."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"To be completely transparent, I probably bring myself the most stress because of my innate desire to be the best. I strive for perfection too often, which causes undue stress on myself. I manage this by focusing my energy on productive activities that are good for my career. Also, on my days off, I do activities that relieve stress, like yoga, riding my bike, and spending time with my nieces and nephews."

5. What is your impact goal if Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital hired you today?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

If you want to make an impact with your answer, refer to the company's immediate needs, such as increasing budgets or improving patient care, for instance.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
This question is delicate, and you need to show respect for the onboarding process, then give a moderately ambitious project that you could execute. This concept is often called your 'value proposition' in marketing. "Hire me because I'll do X."
But remember, this is your campaign promise; if hired, it will likely be your first target to hit, and depending on the environment, it could make or break you. The best approach is to give a functional analysis of the employers' needs and your skills.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"When we were speaking earlier, you mentioned that you were urgently seeking to improve the level of patient care and compassion at this facility. I want to offer my strong skills when it comes to building patient rapport and help to improve the satisfaction of everyone that uses the services of Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. I plan to make a positive impact very quickly."
Written by Darby Faubion
2nd Answer Example
"My impact goal is to complete the onboarding process very quickly, meet my coworkers and supervisors, and learn everything I can about the policies and procedures at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital. After settling in, I can then see if there are any goals my supervisor has for the unit. I will do all I can to help the unit achieve those goals."

6. Think about a difficult boss, professor, or coworker. What made them challenging to be around? How did you successfully interact with this person?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer asks this question to gain insight into your conflict resolution, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills. They want to see that you can work with challenging people maturely and professionally.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Show the interviewer that you work well with most personalities even though you recognize some folks who are pretty difficult to please.
Think about that one person at work who is seen as hard to please. Perhaps there is someone at work who tries to intimidate others. Talk to the interviewer about what made this person challenging and their relationship with you. Avoid speaking poorly of anyone, and be sure to end your response on a positive note.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I once worked at a small medical facility where the primary physician was very demanding. When he would walk into the facility, employees would quietly announce that he was in the building, so that everyone could be prepared for his arrival. This physician had great intentions; however, his people skills were a little rough. I could see that he meant well, and I recognized that he wanted to do a lot of good things. When we interacted, I always took his feedback with the understanding that he didn't mean things as harshly as he might say them."
Written by Darby Faubion
2nd Answer Example
"In my previous position, I had a coworker who didn't pull their weight. This unmotivated coworker created more work for the rest of the team by being slow and unresponsive. Our team started to complete most of the tasks regarding group projects. It didn't take much time before our department head noticed this individual was slacking. In most instances, the underachievers will weed themselves out over time, and it's rarely worth making a fuss over."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question

Lastly, asking the interviewer what resources they refer to for industry trends is a great idea. That question can start up a great conversation, and you may learn a thing or two as well.

Focus Your Answer On

19. Our Behavioral Health Program offers patients with mental health issues treatment within the comfort of their own homes. What can you think of that would be a benefit to treating mental health patients in their homes?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Following an assessment of the patient's mental status, family dynamics, home environment, and safety, the Memorial Hermann Home Care Behavioral Health Services team will develop a customized treatment plan. A goal of the program is to decrease hospital/emergency room re-admissions; on average, those patients following their treatment plan experience fewer hospital/emergency room re-admissions. The interviewer wants to see if you can rationalize why having someone with a mental health issue be at home for care may be preferred over a hospital admission. Share your thoughts.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Show the interviewer that you agree with the goals of their program, providing your reasons why. Some answers could include patients being more comfortable being treated in the comfort of their homes, being surrounded by family and friends, and being in a familiar setting.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"As with any illness, I believe most patients feel more at ease in their own homes. Being surrounded by the people and things that are most familiar tends to decrease anxiety which alone can lead to other health issues. I think the idea of treating any health issue, not just mental health, in the comfort of one's home would also be a preference of family members."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"Mental Health issues are certainly focused on more today than in the past. Some mental health disorders such as paranoia or anxiety are more easily controlled when the patient is in a familiar setting. Being in an unfamiliar setting such as a hospital or psychiatric facility can often exacerbate the symptoms and cause longer recovery times. Of course, with the proper treatment plan and an active support system, I can see where receiving home care could be very beneficial to a mental health client."

Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
The interviewer wants to ensure that you are committed to healthcare for your career. They want to see if you will be a good investment if hired and that you are not looking at this job as a stepping stone to leave for another facility.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"My entire career has been dedicated to the healthcare field. I find it incredibly rewarding and interesting because I get to help others, and every day brings new challenges! Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022

21. How do you keep your emotions from getting in the way of your productivity?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to know if you consider yourself an emotionally driven person and, if so, if you ever let your feelings interfere with your work. Talk to the interviewer about your emotions and if they have ever affected your productivity at work. Remember that almost everyone is an emotional creature to some degree, but in the healthcare industry, it is essential to keep your emotions under control.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Describe the methods you use to keep your emotions from interfering with your work. You want the interviewer to understand that you have compassion and empathy for your patients, but at the same time, you can maintain composure during difficult times.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Everyone is emotional to a certain degree, and I consider myself caring and empathetic. A healthcare career can sometimes be emotional; however, I choose to focus on the positives. For instance - if we are close to losing a patient, I will focus on the positive memories rather than the illness. This mindset has consistently allowed me to continue with a productive shift no matter the emotions that come my way."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"This is a great question. We've all had those tough cases. A child dies, a patient yells at you, or you must give someone a cancer diagnosis. It's professional to take a few minutes after an encounter and let those emotions come and go. I cope with these emotions by telling myself that it's not my story; it's the patient's story. I think it's okay to be moved by someone else's experience, but I don't need to make it mine."

22. The Memorial Hermann Mental Health Crisis Clinics (MHCCs) are outpatient mental health service providers that serve individuals in crises. Do you have any experience working with patients with mental health diagnoses?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The Memorial Hermann Mental Health Crisis Clinics (MHCCs) serve individuals in crises or unable to follow up with other outpatient providers for their mental health needs. While the MHCCs are not designed to provide continuous outpatient follow-up for mental health needs, clinic staff will assist in finding outpatient follow-up either by helping patients make an appointment for follow-up with an outpatient provider or by providing patients with resources and referrals. In the past, mental health issues were often overlooked. Today, however, mental health awareness is being given the attention that it deserves. Memorial Hermann's efforts to assist mental health clients who need aftercare is a great outreach. Be sure to compliment the hospital on its efforts.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
There is no right or wrong answer to this question. The interviewer wants to hear if you have experience working with patients with mental health diagnoses or not. If you have, describe in what context. If you do not have experience working with this population, tell the interviewer how you are interested in learning more about mental health issues to work with these patients effectively.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I agree that mental health issues have been minimized in the past. I am so glad to see a hospital like Memorial Hermann reaching out to mental health clients and trying to bridge the gap for them as they seek ongoing care. I have studied psychology and addictive personality disorders over the last few years. I have seen that the initial crisis is only the beginning of the issue for some of these patients. Many do not know where to go for continuing care and become frustrated while waiting for their first appointment once they are discharged from the hospital. I think the MHCCs are an excellent idea."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I think the idea behind these clinics is great! I believe if we can help patients transition from inpatient care, especially when they have had a crisis, to ongoing outpatient care, we can help them achieve stability in their diagnosis and lead healthier lives."

24. Memorial Hermann Texas Medical Center is one of the nation's busiest Level I trauma centers. Have you ever worked in a trauma center?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer asks this question to determine if you have experience working with trauma patients. They want to see if you will need training before working in trauma or if you will not.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center is one of the nation's busiest Level I trauma centers and the primary teaching hospital for McGovern Medical School at UTHealth. Having a trauma center that is also at the heart of teaching speaks volumes for the care that is given there. In teaching facilities, whether a patient sees more than one physician at a visit or not, there are usually at least two physicians (a resident and a staff physician) overseeing the patient's care. This allows students to learn and patients the assurance that final decisions are being made by a licensed physician overseeing their care. Share with the interviewer any experience you may have working with trauma patients, and always remember to have something positive to say about the hospital.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"One of the things that attracted me to Memorial Hermann Southwest is the trauma center. I briefly worked in a trauma center in (city) and loved it. I like to stay busy, and when working trauma, there usually is not much 'downtime' which goes well with my personality. Also, it gives me a sense of accomplishment when I see patients who have come in with a serious situation who are being cared for and on the road to recovery."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I just completed my certification as a wound care nurse with the hopes of becoming part of a trauma unit. Memorial Hermann's reputation as a top trauma center is one of the reasons I sought out employment opportunities here."

25. To work for Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, you must be able to pass a full criminal background check and drug screen. Will you have an issue passing either?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Working in the healthcare industry means you are in contact with vulnerable people, children, pharmaceutical drugs, drug-related equipment, confidential information, and other areas of sensitivity. Assure the interviewer that you are able and willing to pass a complete background check and drug screen. If you have a criminal record or issue with drugs, you must disclose this.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital invests a lot of money in performing background checks and drug screens on their candidates. If you have a reason to believe you will have an issue passing either, it is best to inform the interviewer when asked this question, so they can decide if they want to continue moving forward in the hiring process.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I have a clean criminal record and do not use drugs, so I will not have an issue passing either."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I am not sure if this will forfeit my chance of being considered for the position, but I have a misdemeanor on my record from 15 years ago when I was 18. I was charged with an open container on the beach and paid my fine. I am happy to continue in the interview process and comply with your background checks should you allow for some exceptions. I assure you that my drug test will return negative as I have never used drugs."

26. Memorial Hermann requires our team members to have strong organizational skills and attention to detail. How do you ensure that your workdays are organized, and your documentation is accurate?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The success of the healthcare industry thrives on the accuracy of information and organization. Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you ensure accuracy and organization in your day-to-day activities. Perhaps you use a particular app or software. Maybe you are a pen and paper person. Whatever your method, highlight that you successfully organize your day and that your documentation is highly accurate.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
If you have a letter of recommendation or past performance reviews highlighting your organizational skills and attention to detail, it is best to have a copy or two for the interviewer. When a supervisor commends you on those skills, it carries more weight than when you describe your skills to the interviewer.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I am a highly detailed person, and I thrive on having a high level of organization in my day. This organization includes my scheduling, paperwork, and more. If I am offered a position with Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, you will never find me to be disorganized! I utilize my Outlook calendar and set alerts for myself for deadlines and important activities. My documentation is strong as well."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I'm a bit of a nerd. I carry around a notebook and write down important facts if I think there is a chance I will forget them. But this is usually just for transitions. Every clinic I've ever worked in has its way of communicating and recording facts, so I put time and attention into using the system the people around me are using. That way, it's easier to transition care, and the patient has all their info in the same place. My notebook saves me when I'm swamped, but I try to be efficient and put info directly into the [group record/EMR/chart] when I can. And, I always proofread my work before submitting it to ensure it is error-free."

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The interviewer wants to know what area outside of your profession you would like to gain more knowledge because many companies like to hire within. They want to know that your passions align well with what Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital offers and that maybe in the future, they could move you to an open position in an area that interests you. Talk to the interviewer about which specialty service area you would like to learn more about and why.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
Review Memorial Hermann's website before your interview to understand the specialty services offered. Then, choose one area you find interesting and would like to gain more knowledge and expertise.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"If I could expand my expertise in any healthcare service area I would choose anything within pediatric care. I am interested in this specialty because I would get to know families more personally, and I could enjoy watching young children grow up. This is one of the reasons I have applied to your company. I feel that your focus will be a great fit with my long-term career goals."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I am interested in learning more about dementia, Alzheimer's, and memory disorders. I know quite a bit after caring for my grandmother, who had dementia which progressed to Alzheimer's. However, with the ongoing advancements in this area, I'm sure there is still a lot for me to learn. This area interests me because I know how hard it is for the families of these patients, and I would like to help educate them on what to expect as the disease progresses."

28. Memorial Hermann hospitals exercise an ER Navigation Program to address the problem of inappropriate ER use. Are you familiar with any such program?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
ER Navigation places a Community Health Worker (CHW) in the Memorial Hermann ERs that are frequently used by uninsured and under-insured patients. CHWs identify clinics that best fit a patient's location, income, language, work hours, and bus routes and address issues that may lower the priority of health care (e.g., need for food stamps, rental support, or assistance with utilities). They make appointments, arrange transportation, share information and referrals to community/safety net programs, and educate about public benefits and other payment resources. CHWs initially meet patients during an ER visit. Still, much of their work is done in follow-ups, such as ensuring a clinic appointment was made/ was successful and assisting with the paperwork required for qualification for Medicaid, CHIP, or county indigent programs. Like Palliative Care, using an ER Navigation Program can significantly reduce the number of unnecessary emergency room visits and healthcare costs across the board. Share your opinion of these programs with the interviewer so they can see if you will be a good fit for the company culture if hired.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
If you are familiar with such programs, describe your positive experience. If you are unfamiliar with this program, show the interviewer that you have researched the program and let them know how it can benefit the hospital.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I love this idea! Having worked in an emergency room for several years, I understand that uninsured or under-insured patients often feel their only option is to go to the ER when they are sick. Many do not realize how many resources there are for community members that may assist with healthcare and other needs. Also, having someone to follow up with patients once they leave the emergency room makes them feel like more than just a number, but like their well-being matters."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I have never worked in a facility with a program like this, but I think it is a great way to provide education and continuity of care in a much broader way. Educating the people that come through the emergency department about available resources is great in itself, but helping them tap into those resources is a great way to give back!"

Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital strives to achieve the best outcomes in every aspect of growth and care. The interviewer wants to know your thoughts on focusing only on specific areas.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On

Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"I believe this is a great way to approach growth within any facility. It's easy to get caught up in trying several new things and then become overloaded. I think that measuring outcomes and focusing on the things that could bring the greatest benefit to the company and patients shows great insight for those who are trying to build something lasting."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I can see where well-focused goals and concentrated areas of expansion could benefit any organization, especially concerning healthcare. I believe that measuring outcomes of specific areas of care and concentration and focusing on the growth and development of those areas allows for greater improvement, rather than being 'spread too thin' and not accomplishing desired goals."

Let the interviewer know you can resolve all types of issues using your critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"In my most recent position, we had a consistent problem with employees arriving late for their shifts or calling in sick at the very last moment. Rather than the typical documenting and reprimanding style that management usually takes, I decided to track the results of an accountability reward system. For 180 days, my employees were rewarded for coming to work 10 minutes early. Ultimately, we awarded those with perfect attendance a $600 bonus. In the end, the bonus cost us less money than the cost of lowered productivity due to absent employees. The program was successful, and upper management chose to keep it implemented for another six months. We will re-assess in December, but it seems to work very well."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"I was working in a clinic where the primary population was low income. We had a lot of concerns with patients not showing up for appointments when expected. The staff wanted to start double-booking patient time slots. Instead, I got permission to spend a day in a highly-rated clinic serving the same population. Instead of scheduling, they had these 'drop-in mornings' with a common waiting room. I took these methods and incorporated them into our setting. We did that twice a week, and it completely solved our scheduling problem."

32. Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital promotes Supportive Medicine; a medical discipline focused on reducing gaps in patient care and support. Are you familiar with Supportive Medicine, and have you ever been involved with it?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The Supportive Medicine Team, also known as the Palliative Care Team, is a physician-led, interdisciplinary care team focused on improving the quality of care for patients with serious and life-threatening illnesses by providing an extra layer of support. Goals include management of patient symptoms associated with disease, improved patient/family satisfaction, reduced unnecessary emergency room visits and hospital admissions, and reduced duration of hospital stays. Share your thoughts regarding Palliative Care with the interviewer.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
Focus Your Answer On
If you are familiar with Supportive Medicine, explain how you have been involved and your opinion of the treatment. If you are unfamiliar with Palliative Care, do some research before your interview and describe the benefits you see with Supportive Medicine.
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
1st Answer Example
"Being a caregiver for an ill family member can be a very taxing responsibility, especially when that loved one is in pain. I have seen that when we can provide management of symptoms, it helps reduce anxiety for both the patient and their caregiver. This also helps them to be more at ease with knowing when to seek emergency care. While some lay-persons may not realize it, palliative care saves money for society as a whole because fewer emergent issues are cared for by symptom management rather than unnecessary ER visits. I commend Memorial Health for being proactive in any Palliative Care initiative."
Written by Krista Wenz on August 21st, 2022
2nd Answer Example
"At first, I was a little confused about palliative care. I thought a patient had to have hospice care to receive palliative care. I understand now that palliative care can stand alone or be a part of a hospice care plan in that it offers management of symptoms whether the patient is actively seeking a cure. I think managing symptoms, especially pain and anxiety, make it easier for the patient and the caregiver. I say this because if someone is anxious or in pain, their decision-making and rationale are not always as clear. Anything we can do to help alleviate some of the stress related to illness is a good thing, in my opinion."
