The matching algorithm for fellowship programs takes an applicant-centered approach, meaning it looks to rank current residents with their top fellowship program choice as long as the program holds the candidate as a top choice. Knowing this, your interviewers want to ensure that their Gastroenterology Fellowship program fits your needs.

"Right now, I'm focusing my career path in community medicine as a Gastroenterologist that has a strong focus in a well-rounded clinical practice. Looking to be a jack of all trades, I want to get a strong foundation in outpatient care, inpatient care, and procedural care. Exposure to clinical trial experience in fellowship is also very important to me."

Your interviewers are ultimately asking why you want to enter their program. As you research the program prior to your interview, come ready to explain how the program meets your needs and your ultimate goals for training as a GI Fellow. Try to identify a few unique features of the program that are important to you when ranking the programs that you interview with.

Okay! It's great that you're looking for exposure in these key areas. To round out your answer, state that you believe this program is perfectly suited for you because it will provide the training you need in outpatient and inpatient care, procedural care, and clinical trial experience. Good job!

I am looking for a collegial training environment with a well-balanced training curriculum for fellows in terms of cognitive and procedural skills as well as adequate research opportunities as I aim to become an academic gastroenterologist. I also look forward to diverse patient and disease exposure so that I am ready to take on any challenges post-graduation as a competent gastroenterologist. I would like to stress the importance of a healthy and supportive culture in the workplace which I experienced during my residency training as we spend more time at work than home and would like that environment to be nurturing for personal and professional growth.

Jaymie's Feedback
Great answer! If you researched the program and found alignment in these areas, be sure to speak to that as well.
