"Throughout my internal medicine residency, I gravitated toward cases involving hormonal issues. These areas of care offer a blend of challenging cases and the opportunity to foster meaningful relationships with patients, which are both aspects of care that are important to me."

Discuss your interest in endocrinology. Perhaps it's related to specific experiences you had during residency; maybe you have a family member who suffers from thyroid issues. Answer honestly, and feel free to add a personal touch to your answer. This will help the interviewers relate to you as an individual and make for a memorable conversation down the road as the interviewers decide which applicants to match into their fellowship program.

Endocrinology is a complex specialty of medicine that provides the ability to form long-term meaningful relationships with patients. These aspects of care are very important to me as a physician. Being a chess player, I gravitate towards intellectually stimulating fields which naturally drew me to endocrinology. My interaction with a young female with type 2 diabetes and obesity during my third year of medical school brought back memories of my own challenges with obesity in adolescence and I felt this field is where I can make the most impact in.
Marcie's Feedback
This is a strong response because it's personalized (mentioning your previous challenges with obesity is impactful). Plus, you do a great job of connecting your hobby of playing chess with your desire to pursue this career path (in addition to reminding the interviewer that you're someone who enjoys intellectual stimulation). Excellent!
Prepare for program director questions that assess your clinical reasoning and research potential.
