Fellowship training requires you to hone and master new skills while improving some of the skills you developed as a resident. Your interviewers want you to discuss the specific clinical skills you developed during residency training that will help you succeed in their fellowship.

Think about the clinical skills and soft skills (like communication) you polished during residency training. Highlight the most advanced and notable skills and discuss how they will help you succeed as a fellow. Talk openly and honestly about the procedures, tests, and exams you gained experience with during your residency training.

"During my internal medicine residency training, I was exposed to several uncommon diseases and many patients with comorbidities. Managing these complex cases expanded my knowledge base and helped me refine my differential diagnoses skills. Having been exposed to such a broad range of cases means I have a solid foundation to build upon during fellowship."

My residency training was unique in several ways which helped me grow as a physician and a person. I began my residency in a community hospital setting which exposed me to both common and rare conditions and helped me build a broad knowledge base. We were then taken over by a University Hospital and we rotated in multiple campuses which exposed me to a wide variety of pathologies and some unique conditions requiring tertiary-level multidisciplinary care. Managing complex cases also refined my differential diagnosis skills. Being in residency during the COVID-19 pandemic also taught me resilience and perseverance in the face of uncertainty. I believe I have a solid foundation to build upon during fellowship.
Marcie's Feedback
This is a very strong response. It is clear that you developed many skills during your residency, especially because you were able to work in several different settings. Plus, doing your residency during Covid created additional challenges that further strengthened you. You do a great job of explaining all of this. Excellent!
