Everyone handles setbacks differently. Your interviewers want to know about your approach to navigating setbacks. They're hoping to hear that you have strategies in place to ensure that setbacks don't impact the quality of your work or your ability to interact with patients and their families.

"Experiencing a setback can be disappointing and even disheartening, especially when it involves a patient. I'm not ashamed of any of the setbacks I had during residency training because they helped me grow as a physician. If I experience a major setback as a fellow, I will take a few moments to internally debrief and collect my thoughts, and even get some fresh air if possible or discuss what I could have done differently with an attending physician. Then, I move on, recovering quickly so I can concentrate on the next case and give it my undivided attention."

Ryan Brunner has over ten years of experience recruiting, interviewing, and hiring candidates in the healthcare, public service, and private manufacturing/distribution industries.

When I suffer a setback, at first, of course, I feel a little bit sad. However, this setback will also be my push/inspiration to be better and do better. I will learn from this setback, and I don't let it affect my work.

Nice! The interviewer will be happy to hear that you learn from setbacks. To strengthen your answer, include an example of a time when you successfully handled a setback. Emphasize that you view setbacks as learning opportunities and that you're resilient by nature. Good job!

It’s not uncommon to experience setbacks during residency. Whenever I come across a setback, I always try to take a step back and analyze the situation with a calm attitude. I try to figure out what went wrong and how I can adapt going forward. I was a new intern when I felt I was struggling with pre-rounding as I would sometimes not recall every detail of my patient during rounds. I made a habit of updating my hospital course and to-do list daily which kept me up to date and was appreciated at the end of rotation by my attending.

Excellent job! You touched on critical aspects like calmness, reflection, investigating the root cause, and learning from the situation. It was also great that you included a brief example in your response.
