5. What does the word 'home' mean to you?
What You Need to Know
This question assesses your psychological state, and depending on your response, may tell the interviewer whether you are ready to take this big step outside of your comfort zone or if you have reservations about leaving home. There is no right or wrong answer. Even if you are nervous, that's okay.
You don't necessarily need to describe your house or where you came from. Focus on a safe space, your happy place, that puts you at ease. It can be next to the fireplace during the holidays or on the beach, staring at the sunset.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"My parents moved us around a bit when we were kids, and I questioned where or what home even was. Eventually, I realized I walk around my home every day. It isn't stuff or a house. My body is my home, and I take it with me everywhere I go. So I'm never homesick."

7. Have you ever spent significant time away from your home, friends, and family?
What You Need to Know
For some students, homesickness can lead to poor behavioral or emotional distress, such as anxiety, stress, depression, and social withdrawal. Your interviewers are curious if you've explored this and whether you've considered how you'll manage this often ignored issue. This could impact one's studies and academic performance.
Showcasing that you've thought this through and explored solutions for this possibility will reflect that you go the extra mile to ensure your success. Some common approaches to combat homesickness and embrace college life away from home are joining or forming a club, joining a gym or fitness class, and taking part in campus activities, to name a few. Share how you'll maintain close communication with your support groups at home (friends, family, mentors, etc.), among many other methods. Display your knowledge of the resources Salus offers and share your plan.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I combed over every page of the college's website and am familiar with the students' services offered here. I've also done a fair share of research on how to combat homesickness in your first year of college. But in all honesty, I won't be far from friends or family. My sister lives in town, and I plan to hang out with her when I can. I am one of the lucky ones whose sibling is also their best friend."

8. The work load at Salus University’s Pennsylvania College of Optometry will be intense. How do you manage your stress?
What You Need to Know
This is another question that tests your EQ. Stress is often avoidable. For some, stress can feel overwhelming and result in task paralysis. Those who allow their stress and emotions to dictate their actions may struggle in their pursuits and may make ill-informed decisions. Those decisions are often later looked upon with regret.
There is an adage that says you are never supposed to make life-changing decisions out of a place of emotional volatility or stress. Therefore, the heart of this question is to determine the likelihood of whether you'll back out of your commitment to pursue your degree as a result of feeling stressed or overwhelmed in your studies. Highlight how you manage and cope with your stress and don't allow it to dictate or hamper your scholastic or career pursuits. Sharing your approach to overcoming your stress will go far in answering this question.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I handle stress very well, and if you call my previous professors for references, they will attest to this fact. When I am under pressure with a challenging workload, I focus on the task at hand and make sure to not get distracted. Staying on deadline is very helpful, and I will ask for help when necessary to alleviate some stress."

9. As an optometrist, how would you stay in touch with your community’s needs?
What You Need to Know
The interviewers are curious if you share their ideals. As they state on their website, "We have a responsibility to the communities we serve. We have a responsibility to the broader community. We believe that all of our endeavors should have an enduring impact beyond the confines of the University." Talk about what you have done to give back to your community and how their ideology fits your career plans and goals. Ultimately, the interviewers are curious if you are interested in volunteering and giving back to your community. Talk about any volunteer work or community organizations close to your heart. Then branch off from there and share your loftier goals and dreams in this regard.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"Currently, I visit the nursing home in my area regularly and help the residents with their daily tasks. I think that volunteerism is incredibly important. 10. When you suffer a setback, how does that emotionally impact your work?
What You Need to Know
One's emotional intelligence, or emotional maturity, is one's ability to govern one's emotions rather than allowing one's emotions to dictate one's reactions, responses, demeanor, or attitude. Everyone handles the stress and disappointment of setbacks differently. Setbacks can feel exaggerated working in the medical field.
Share the emotional impact of your example and explain how you coped with it and governed those emotions. Demonstrate that you don't allow your emotions to set you back further than the setback itself. It's important to observe and recognize the situational setback for what it was, analyze it, learn from it, and take what you've learned from the setback to improve your performance by moving forward. When approaching any personal setbacks or failures this way, you turn them into your next success story. Every hard-learned lesson is a future success hard-gained.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"Experiencing a setback is always disappointing and can be very disheartening, especially when involving a project that I have put a lot of time and effort into. I understand that setbacks happen often, and to everyone - despite their level of expertise or years of experience. If I experience a major setback, I will take a few moments to internally debrief, get some fresh air if possible, or discuss what I could have done differently with a mentor. Then, I move on. Rather than dwell on my mistakes, I choose to learn from them."

11. How do you feel about your interview performance today?
What You Need to Know
This question is a test of your self-evaluative skills and your self-awareness. Individuals with confidence, strong skills, experience, and leadership potential are more likely to succeed. But the greatest predictor of success, according to research, is one's level of self-awareness, which is the heart of this question. Share how you feel you have performed so far. This requires setting fear aside and being honest with yourself. Be specific about where you wished you had performed better. Doing so could be to your advantage and provide you a chance to return to any questions you stumbled on and answer how you would have liked the first time. Doing so will not only exhibit your self-awareness, but an ability to learn from your mistakes, courage, a high EQ, and an ability to take ownership of your mistakes. These are all strong selling points.

12. Who in your life served as a mentor or figure of inspiration?
What You Need to Know
Inspiration is more than an ideal or an idea. Inspiration is something external that motivates you to achieve something you wouldn't have aspired to otherwise. So, your life's inspiration or mentor is someone who has motivated you to pursue or achieve something in a way that expands your nature and your aspirations. Your figure of inspiration can be fictional or real - someone related to you, a friend, an educator, or anyone. What matters is less so who they are and more so what they reveal about you as a person. Talk to the interviewers about who has inspired your life, goals, and career and why this figure impacted you the way they have.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked, and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

13. Describe a situation in which you had to respond to feedback and/or criticism. What was your immediate reaction?
What You Need to Know
Career-minded professionals understand that to achieve the goals they set out for themselves, they have to be willing to stretch their comfort zone, grow, and learn from their failures so as not to repeat them. The lessons we learn from our failures or any feedback or criticism can help increase our chances of success in the future. To make our goals a reality, we have to adapt and be willing to learn and grow.
A person who doesn't take advantage of those growth opportunities, or feels victimized or offended by constructive criticism or feedback, will struggle with their development. Keep these points in mind when answering this question. Your interviewers are looking for assurances that you have the confidence and maturity necessary to gracefully accept feedback and criticism positively, even when it is unsolicited. Not all feedback will be delivered in a friendly, easy-to-absorb manner. But that's no reason to take it personally. Therefore, it is important to exhibit a high EQ when relaying your answer.
Think about a time when you received feedback or criticism which could have been considered insensitive or surprising. Discuss how you reacted productively and impartially. Stress that you were able to find worth in the criticism and learn from it.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"Last year, I received a low grade on a chemistry project. When I approached my professor about the low grade, he said, 'You can do better. I expected more from you.' I was taken aback at first, but once I had time to absorb what was said, I realized that he expected more from me because he had high expectations of what I was capable of doing. It was a compliment and a challenge rolled into one! I re-did the assignment with more passion the second time around. My grade improved significantly, and I thanked that professor for holding me to a higher standard."

You've performed research on Salus and are aligning your vision and goals with theirs. So while listing the other schools, be prepared to elaborate on how their mission statements and goals align with your pursuits and how those choices align with what Salus does while distinguishing how Salus stands apart from those competitors. 16. What are you reading right now?
What You Need to Know
Once admitted to the school, you will be required to read several textbooks. The interviewers are curious if you read for pleasure and have the communication skills required to effectively discuss what you read. They want to learn more about your interests and drivers, and as a more fun perk, they are curious about what social skills you possess and if you might offer recommendations to strike up a conversation.
It doesn't matter what the topic or category is for the book you are reading as long as you are enthusiastic about it. However, it should exhibit an appropriate reading level for a college-bound student. Therefore, avoid volunteering juvenile fiction regardless of its pop-culture value or how fun it may be. Avoid volunteering books that were school assignments, as this could convey you don't prefer to read unless it is required. Also, avoid naming books that seem like you are just trying to impress them by telling them what they want to hear.
Ideally, you'll want to share a title that you are sincerely enthusiastic about, something with substance, something age-appropriate, and which offers insights into your personality and character. Remember, this question is less about the book itself and more about you as a person. Consider what the book you choose will say about you.

17. What sets you apart from the other students with similar qualifications?
What You Need to Know
The selection process is tough. Your admissions interviewers are doing their best to find future alumni in the applicant pool. This question asks you to explain why they should choose you. Go beyond what all the other applicants will probably say in response to this question. They are all talented candidates, have stellar grades, a drive, and the potential to be alumni.
You can find this on a brochure on their website: "Many factors are considered in selecting students for admission, including the applicant's academic performance, motivation, extracurricular activities and interests, related and unrelated work experience, personal achievements, essays, and letters of evaluation. When evaluating academic performance, the applicant's grade point average, performance in prerequisite courses, number of college credits completed per semester credit load, degree status, and results of the Optometry Admissions Test (OAT) are carefully considered." These are the sorts of things that can set you apart.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I believe I am the strongest student for your optometry program because I am incredibly dedicated to my professional and personal development. Since beginning my undergraduate program, I have committed to taking a personal development workshop twice per year. 18. What do you feel is the single most important quality an optometrist should possess?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewers want to see if you understand the desired qualities and characteristics of a successful optometrist and are the kind of optometrist who embraces their values and whom they would be proud to count among their alumni. Their website states, "Pennsylvania College of Optometry at Salus University has an unparalleled legacy in the education of competent and compassionate Doctors of Optometry." Competence and compassion are two traits they value highly enough to mention.
Think about how you exhibit empathy and compassion and how that drives your pursuit in this field. You'll also notice when exploring the site that one of their keywords is 'innovation.' They pride themselves on continual innovation and scientific development through pioneering research. So, one can assume their definition of competence is staying ahead of the curve and being constantly informed on the most recent scientific developments in the field.
If you are interested in the research side of optometry, share this. Also, aligning your personality with the school's mission statement and values can go a long way. Consider these points when formulating your answer.

Revised Answer:
I believe that empathy is an important characteristic to have as an optometrist. Many individuals these days are trying to fit as many patients into their schedule as possible without considering that some patients may require more time than others. I understand that some patients are too needy, but they need to be reassured & given some direction without feeling like they are just another patient in your schedule. Deciding to slow down just a little bit and focus on the patient at hand shows your patients that they really do matter to you and that their time, needs, and concerns are as important to you as they are to them. That is why I believe empathy is a key component, if not the most important quality to have as an optometrist. As such, I plan to put myself in my patient's shoes and give them the kind of time, attention, and focus I would want while visiting a healthcare provider."

20. Tell us something that we would not know about you from reading your CV.

But not every selling point is appropriate for a cover letter, especially when those points could be lost in translation. This is your opportunity to explore some of the items listed on your cover letter or offer the points that didn't make it into your CV.
Remember, they are looking for "academic performance, motivation, extracurricular activities and interests, related and unrelated work experience, personal achievements, essays, and letters of evaluation." The interviewers would also like to get to know you apart from your CV and school transcripts. Stick with a few fun facts to show the interviewers at Salus University that you are a real person, too. Especially those that fuel your work ethic or pursuits.

What You Need to Know

Convince them you are determined to become an optometrist and that this isn't just one of many career choices you whimsically decided to pursue.
Remember, they are trying to assess your level of commitment. Share what attracted you to pursue a career in optometry. Whatever your motivation may be, remain positive and enthusiastic.

Answer Example
"When I was a small kid, my grandfather lost his eyesight due to glaucoma, and it was difficult to see him feel so helpless and defeated. I wanted to help him, but I didn't have the skills at that time. That's when I decided my medical specialty would be optometry. It's not a popular practice in the medical field, but eyesight is so important."

Revised Answer:
A self-development plan is very important for continued growth and achievement. I will continue to volunteer with the Lions Club in free vision screenings & mission trips related to the field of optometry whenever I can. I will also attend workshops for my own personal development & continue to read books regarding success. One of the books I am currently reading is "How to Be a Bawse" by Lilly Singh. I find this book very relatable and easy to implement many of the suggestions/advice she has written and used on her own journey towards success, such as visualizations, letting go of FOMO (fear of missing out), aiming high, and setting deadlines."

28. Pretend you have to describe the colors of the rainbow to a blind person. What would you say?
What You Need to Know
The point of this question, although related in subject to optometry, is not so much in the answer you deliver but in how you process it in real-time in front of your interviewer. Any time you answer a brainteaser question, riddle, or puzzle in an interview, you want to answer as follows;
Carefully consider the question, spending a moment to process it before blurting out an answer. Ask questions to ensure you have all the information you need to proceed intelligently. Think it through out loud, so your interviewer can see how you approach such complicated scenarios. That will display your resourcefulness and creativity when problem-solving. A common approach is to appeal to the other senses a blind person does possess, such as touch, emotions, smell, and taste. But the extra step would be to portray a sensitive bedside manner while remaining sunny and positive.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I'd describe color by translating them to their other senses. I'd ask them what they wanted to know. For example, I'd help them explore the color blue through the association of something cold, red through heat or anger or blood, green by foliage, gray from the rain, etcetera. I'd patiently stand by and answer any questions I could and pay attention to the nuance of how they communicate.
I think it's important to pay close attention to how others communicate because it can give you a better understanding of how they perceive the world. In the medical field, too often, you find yourself translating complicated terms in a way a patient understands. So you have to be adept at communicating things to your patients in a way a patient will understand. That's easy to do when you pay attention to how they explain things to others. All that takes is investing a little time in listening to them."

29. Tell me about a time you felt you were graded unfairly. How did you approach the situation?
What You Need to Know
Your answer to this question will offer insights into your communication skills in situations that may prove more challenging. It also touches upon whether you take feedback as a growth opportunity or if you take it personally. They'll gauge your respect for your superiors/teachers/professors.
The trick to answering this question is to demonstrate your truth, remain respectful while defending your position, and have the wisdom to know when to choose your battles. It also requires an open mind, a willingness to explore possibilities you hadn't previously considered, above-average communication skills, and humility.

Answer Example
"My biology teacher once gave me an F on my paper, which confused me since I thought I'd performed perfectly. So I first reviewed the answers on the test and crosschecked them, and I should have had a perfect score. I waited after class to respectfully talk to them in private since I knew there was an error. At first, my instructor refused to look at the paper, sticking firmly to their position and trying to educate me about being a good loser. They kept talking over me. When they refused to look at the paper, I read my answers aloud. This caused them to pause, and a look of concern drew over their face. They then took the paper from me, looked at their computer, scrolled around, and realized they'd graded me poorly and assigned my perfect score to another student with a similar name. They grumbled that they saw where the problem occurred, grumbled that they fixed it and that I now had a perfect score, and asked me if I was happy. They made no apology and told me to have a nice day and left. And that was that. I was just glad I defended myself and came out on top."

30. What do you perceive as the most concerning topic facing optometry today?
What You Need to Know
Your interviewers are curious if you take a keen interest in current events, developments, trends, and challenges the industry faces today. They're looking for assurances you invest time learning and understanding the challenges you'll face in your future career as an optometrist. They want to know you'll be the kind of alumni that will make them shine.
For example, this is copied from an article on one of their web pages: "'As more optometrists are thoroughly trained, I suspect the field of neuro-ophthalmic disease will continue to grow in our communities,' said Dr. Maglione. 'I am honored and excited not only to continue the legacy but also hope to inspire 'neuro-excellence' in the way that it was inspired for me.'"
A career-focused professional will stay up to date on any changes or developments in their industry. Spark an insightful conversation by sharing what you feel is a primary issue, and be sure to ask the interviewers what they see as the most concerning issue facing the field today. Phrase your response to showcase the breadth of your knowledge and the extent of your research on the matter.
Written by Kevin Downey on August 9th, 2022
Answer Example
"I feel the most concerning issue in optometry is that many children do not receive regular eye exams. Affordable exams should be accessible to anyone, regardless of their financial or social status, so I plan to offer free exams to children under 12 years old when I open my own practice. What do you feel are the most concerning issues facing the medical industry today?"

31. Which optometry-related newspapers, journals or publications do you read to stay current on industry developments?
What You Need to Know
Frequently, interviewers will challenge you by asking similarly phrased questions that are distinct from one another. They do this to test your attention to detail and the consistency between your answers, which allows them to gauge your authenticity. So this question stands apart from the question concerning the most relevant issues optometry faces today, to what sources you turn to for your up-to-date information. With this question, your interviewers are gauging your genuine interest in continually learning and improving your skills and industry knowledge.
Share the resources you turn to for staying up to date on industry trends, breakthroughs, optometry-related concerns, and more. Share the optometry-related medical journals, magazines, blogs, or whatever resources you turn to stay informed. It's also a great idea to ask the interviewers for their favorite methods of staying current. Asking this question in return can make for great dialogue, and you never know what you will learn!

33. Talk to us about your current GPA.
What You Need to Know
Situations that are out of our control can often arise. But it is important to view these as contingency situations you can plan for rather than framing yourself as a victim of circumstance. Someone who carries the attitude of a victim often positions their fate as beyond their control. That reflects holding little accountability for one's actions. Yet, whether you are satisfied with your current GPA or not is only part of what this question is after. The heart of this question is what you learned while earning your GPA and how you would take what you learned to drive greater success moving forward. That reflects a propensity for taking control of your destiny. This is the opposite of the attitude of a victim. The road to self-improvement is never-ending. Your current GPA got you this far. This question presents an opportunity to explain what contributed to your current GPA and elaborate on your plans to succeed.

35. What was your most recent favorite class? Why was it your favorite?
What You Need to Know
The interviewer is curious about what coursework interests you most. By determining your educational interests, they'll better understand how to guide you through your approach to your degree. Additionally, they're curious how relevant your favorite class is to the curriculum you'll face at Salus.
Choose a class you excelled in. If the class doesn't seem translatable to your degree, the interviewer may question whether optometry is the right career path for you. But this can be cleared up when you explain why the class was your favorite, especially if it was less about the subject matter and more about the teacher or professor who made the class interesting. Otherwise, choose one that aligns with the degree you've chosen to pursue.

"Honesty, my favorite class was my yoga class. It sounds odd, but I discovered it was key to me being able to decompress and destress instantly. Now, whenever I feel overwhelmed by my studies, I can take a micro break doing some quick yoga, and it feels like I just took a vacation. It helps me strike a sustainable balance to which I largely attribute my success. My colleagues ask me how I do it - how I always turn in my assignments early and have so much time left over for revisions and then free time on top of that. I always tell them Yoga. They laugh and think I'm kidding."

37. How would you maintain your grades and keep up with your coursework away from home without feeling burned out?
What You Need to Know
More introverted first-year students face challenges maintaining their grades while experiencing culture shock and homesickness. They may also experience difficulty making new friends. These individuals often think they'll just bury themselves in their studies and be fine but don't know where to turn when they need an escape from their studies.
More introverted students might escape into new friendships and embrace a party lifestyle in their early college years, which can also cause their studies to suffer. This question aims to determine how you approach your course load while maintaining your grades and striking a balance. Your answer will help them ascertain your approach, your intentions, whether you are more of an introvert versus an extrovert, and if you can strike a balance.

I enjoy playing guitar, and picking it up and playing a song or two clears my mind and refreshes me. I also afford myself more substantial breaks. I have no trouble making new friends and am excited to explore the campus and the surrounding area. I am looking for to everything this experience has to offer. Inclusion
38. What experience do you have relating to people with backgrounds different from your own?
What You Need to Know
This is another subject Salus University covers at length on their website: "The Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) establishes cultural humility as foundational to the education and professional formation of emerging healthcare clinicians, educators, and scientists. We foster meaningful connections through critical thinking and self-reflection, courageous conversations, culturally responsive care and practices for patients and clients, and intentional collaborations with alumni and the local community."
Research has shown when a physician is of the same race as their patient or from the same background, there is a higher level of trust and satisfaction in the doctor/patient relationship. Research has also revealed that students training at diverse schools are more comfortable treating patients from varied ethnic backgrounds.
When answering questions surrounding diversity and inclusion, demonstrate an above-average level of empathy and acceptance. We are all driven by the same basic needs and unifying experiences. Display a deeper understanding of why this is an important question to ask and share the breadth of your knowledge on Salus University's approach to these topics by thoroughly studying the multiple pages addressing this on their website.

Answer Example
"Not everyone is afforded the same opportunities, and as a result of racial disparity, there is a long-standing distrust among some communities regarding health care.
