The interviewer would like to know that you are socially responsible and a team player - even outside of the workplace. Your answer can be as simple as babysitting your grand-kids every Sunday, to a standing-volunteer gig, to charitable contributions.

"I work a lot but, when I do have free time, I spend that with my grand-kids. It helps to give my son a bit of a break as he is a full-time single dad. In addition to this, I volunteer at the local drop-in center every Christmas to help feed the homeless. Giving back is very important to me."

Giving back to the less fortunate is something that has always been important to me too. Giving back takes several shapes and forms, not just monetary contributions but also getting invested in things that matter and where you can make a difference. For instance, I volunteered as a F2F representative at UN Women to spread awareness on gender equality issues and gain monetary supporters to the cause.

Stephanie's Feedback
Giving back to others is meaningful, both personally and professionally, and this employer clearly wants to make sure that your values are in line with the company's commitment to giving. However, I suggest removing the phrase "less fortunate" as this can sometimes be misunderstood as condescending. I suggest rephrasing it with simply "Giving back to others is something that has always been important to me."
