1. What does integrity mean to you?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Part of determining whether they can trust you to serve as a representative of their company is ensuring you would live according to their values and their code of conduct and ethics. As Boeing's CEO, Dave Calhoun, once said, "You must achieve the confidence of knowing that you possess absolute, unbending, unimpeachable integrity. Everyone must know that. Above all else, it is integrity that defines your character."

What You Need to Know
HireVue advertises "Virtual interviewing is similar to the video calls many of us have been using. Since you can interview from anywhere, make sure it's somewhere you're comfortable." They offer candidates advice, such as finding a location free of distractions, and, if you can't find a professional setting, to use their background blur feature. But remember, your recorded video will also be viewed by the hiring authority at Boeing, who may wonder why you chose to blur your background rather than find a more suitable setting, which is a reflection of your work ethic. They may wonder what you are hiding from view, which is a question of your integrity. Even though they claim their algorithm is bias-free, the recruiter makes the final call.
Bear in mind that the surroundings you choose for your interview are a reflection of who you are as a professional. You'll want their focus to be on you and not on your background. Make sure your space is organized, free of distractions, and work-appropriate. Choose a space not too cluttered, preferably with a plain background.

How to Prep
Your surroundings are a reflection of your professionalism, and you'll want to present yourself as a professional in every way. So, you'll want your focus to be on you and not on your background. Make sure your space is organized, free of distractions, and work-appropriate. Use this as an opportunity to reflect on what they can expect from you. Showcase how organized you are, and how if given the option of working remotely, you can be relied upon to be self-managed in your work. Also, confidentiality is another concern when it comes to Boeing, who offers the following advice for your video interview, "Be aware of your surroundings. Check the wall behind you to ensure no confidential or private information will appear on camera. Also, check there's no private information visible in the background."

Answer Example
"For me, integrity is being true to your character and principles. It's about having the courage to always do the right thing, regardless of the circumstances and how difficult it may sometimes be. It's about living by your values."

Career Goals
2. Tell us about your career plans.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Most recruiters are primarily interested in hiring talent who not only want to work specifically for them but are looking for employment with longevity in mind. They have no interest in helping candidates with their salary springboarding while they wait for a better offer to come along. So this question is aimed at determining whether you see a future with Boeing, and have identified opportunities for advancement that are in line with your goals. "These help us better understand how you could be a great asset to our company and to see if Boeing is a good match."

What You Need to Know
Spend time researching their website, and you'll be able to identify the offerings they advertise in their recruitment efforts, such as upskilling opportunities, digital learning platforms, digital credentialing, and knowledge networks. "We have learning opportunities to fit every schedule to stay ahead of emerging technology. We offer self-paced virtual and in-person learning resources, global networking opportunities, on the job training and structured learning, extensive digital resources, select learning pathways, thousands of knowledge communities at Boeing, enabling teammates to learn from and network with the best and brightest minds in our industry. There are structured communities of practice, informal online social groups and mentoring opportunities for knowledge sharing."

How to Prep
According to HireVue, "Video-based assessments evaluate both what you know about performing the job ('hard skills' or competencies) and what recruiters call 'soft' competencies, like communication skills, conscientiousness, problem-solving skills, team orientation, and initiative." Each assessment model is customized for a specific job role by asking "the right questions to elicit responses that can be measured and that are pertinent to predicting job performance based on IO psychology research. Train the model to notice everything relevant in the interview (what someone says and how they say it), and build a model that uses only the data points that help predict success in the job. The best thing you can do is to carefully study the job description and be sure that you have examples and real experience behind you to show what you know about doing that job well."

Answer Example
"My career plans with Boeing would be to take advantage of every career opportunity, developmental and educational opportunity, and as I continued increasing my credentials and skills, the direction I would want to take would come into clearer focus. So at this point, I would say that my aim is to earn increased trust, and responsibilities, and to grow into a leadership role that feels like the best fit. But as technology and trends are increasing in flux and more difficult to predict and navigate, I would prefer to leave it open to what unfolds in the near future. I feel it's more important than ever to remain flexible."

Communication
3. Tell us about a time you disagreed with a coworker. Describe the situation, your approach, and the outcome.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The aim of this question is to assess whether you perceive disagreements as conflict or merely as another aspect of communication and collaboration. How you answer may potentially provide insights into your sense of teamwork and collaboration, your emotional intelligence, and your conflict resolution skills.

What You Need to Know
The President & CEO of Boeing, David Calhoun, explains, "Seek, Speak & Listen is a simple concept with big impact for Boeing. Through these habits, teammates feel confident speaking up and trust their voice will be heard, which allows us to address issues before they become problems. We also introduced the Seek, Speak and Listen habits to build stronger teams, achieve better business outcomes, to understand each other better. By embracing these simple habits, we make better decisions, drive innovation and build connection. We seek out the places where things aren't going well and where anxiety may be brewing, so we can learn and address issues before they become problems. We get all perspectives on the table and ensure every team member feels safe to speak up. We listen to each other with humility and grace. This is a key part of our commitment to collective progress, lasting cultural change, and enhancing trust from within."

How to Prep
Most of HireVue's interview questions were developed by IO Psychologists, and designed as situational judgment questions, asking about a situation you've been in, your course of action, and the results or consequences of your actions. When asked to "Talk about a time when...," respond with a structured story-based example. As Boeing explains, this is "to better understand your past experience and skills. For example, rather than asking you to speculate, the interview questions will focus on your experiences: "Tell me about a time when ..." "Give me an example of ..." "Have you ever ..." "Was there an instance where you've had to ..." "Describe your experience with ..."
Therefore, Boeing recommends you use the STAR method to formulate your answers. "Answer questions like a STAR! Plan ahead. Before your interview, think about topics that you could use the STAR format to address. They'll help you answer every question more completely. When developing your talking points, think like a STAR: Situation. Describe a challenge or situation you experienced. Task. What did you need to achieve? Action. What steps did you take to complete your task? Results. What was the outcome? Start by thinking through your experiences and identifying successes that map to the role you're applying for. Be prepared to talk about those situations. The STAR format helps you organize your examples so you can stay focused and describe your experiences to the best advantage."

Answer Example
"Well, I was collaborating with a teammate who I am also friends with now, outside of work. We're pretty close. But he can be a bit headstrong at times. As we hit a roadblock with our findings in our research, he became quite insistent on how we should proceed. He positioned himself and dug in his heels. I learned a while back how to navigate this just to understand his intentions, where they were coming from in his position, and why it was so important for him to feel heard and validated. I would mirror what he was saying as I went along and actively listened. Once he felt heard, he was less pushy, and things would open up into more of a discussion. But this time, that didn't work. So I agreed to accommodate his approach, not completely sure whether his approach or my approach was better. On this occasion, his solution worked in the end. But his approach to his communication still needs some work."

4. Why should we hire you?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This is another similarly phrased question directed at determining whether you did your homework and can deliver a strong elevator pitch as to how you are aligned with their ideal candidate. So research their website, and you'll find value propositions made to appeal to their target talent. "From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters. Want to do work that matters? Find your purpose. Join us. You can be part of a team that shapes the future of aerospace. We go further together. At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. Our innovations enable all of humanity to take flight. What does it mean to be a part of Boeing? It means contributing to what matters most in your career, in your community and around the world. It means being a part of rewarding experiences, setting your innovative spirit free to do great things, and making a difference around the world. We're a team of professionals focused on doing one thing, building the future."
Written by Kevin Downey on November 16th, 2023
What You Need to Know
When answering similarly phrased questions, pay attention to the details. Avoid being redundant by repeating points from previous answers. Make sure you don't contradict your previous answers, either. So you want to make sure the information you volunteer is consistent with the rest of your narrative. HireVue advertises that their assessment vendors "ensure hiring team consistency. Each candidate is asked the same questions and is reviewed using the same criteria." This includes how consistent your non-verbal cues are with what you say and whether you unintentionally contradict yourself from answer to answer or from what you've detailed on your resume.
Written by Kevin Downey on November 16th, 2023
How to Prep
When setting up for your on-demand interview, you want to pick a good location. Boeing advises "Since you'll be speaking on camera and through a microphone, it's important to have the best sound and lighting possible. For video interviews, pick a room that has optimal lighting or sit in front of a window so there are no shadows on your face. Find the perfect spot. You want to choose a space with a good light source facing you. If the light source is behind you, you'll appear as a silhouette on the camera. Try a few different places before the interview to find the best spot."
HireVue repeats the same advice on their site as well, advising that you'll want your lighting to be cast evenly across your face. "And don't forget to check your lighting. Make sure it's in front of you. Lighting from behind makes it hard to see you." But this advice is more for their benefit than yours. The algorithm, like anything else, likely has a margin for error, if you're backlit and it's unable to read, or misinterpret your facial expressions, incorrectly categorizing you, or coming up as inconclusive, resulting in eliminating you as a candidate. So try and find a space with good natural lighting.

Answer Example
"I am excited about this time in our industry. The future is now, and I am super passionate about having a hand in shaping what comes next. There's nothing I am more passionate about. So I love what I do professionally and am good at it. To me, my work doesn't feel like work. It's a thrill even on the dullest of days. So I have a strong feeling that I am the type of person who Boeing wants to contribute to this work that matters. Boeing should hire me because I am going to be building the future wherever I land, and why not build it together?"

5. What are your greatest strengths, and how will they be a fit for our company?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This is another question directly aimed at determining whether you have put in the work to identify yourself as a good fit for their company. How you answer will offer clues to your self-awareness and your emotional intelligence. When preparing for your interview, spend just as much time researching yourself as you do Boeing. Identify the keywords and phrases they used to describe their ideal talent. They use words like analytical, strategic, problem-solver, results-driven, experience, technologically savvy, and logical. "We value leadership, integrity and skills. Build your future as part of our team." Use similar professional adjectives to describe yourself and your circumstances, such as career-driven, ambitious, persistent, authentic, patient, enthusiastic, disciplined, and passionate.
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Boeing's recruiter will later review the recorded interviews, often watching several comparable candidates side by side. How heavily they rely upon the information provided in the candidate's insights reports is totally up to the recruiter. The only thing you have control over is how you present yourself, being prepared for what to expect in your HireVue interview. Your goal is to showcase yourself as a confident and experienced professional. In the end, the hiring manager's opinion is the only one that matters.
Written by Kevin Downey on November 16th, 2023
How to Prep
Before your interview, practice delivering your answers in front of your computer's camera. The camera angle should be at eye level. Positioning it too low will make you come across as domineering. Too high and you'll seem too weak or small. Pick the right distance. Don't position yourself too far or too close to the camera. Maintain eye contact in front of the camera as if you're speaking face-to-face with a person.
Grow aware of your non-verbal cues and what they communicate. Be mindful of your facial expressions as the software will monitor your facial expressions. Furrowing your brow while concentrating on how to answer a question can easily be misinterpreted as exhibiting anger and raise a red flag. Some other nonverbal cues the assessment vendor will scan your video interview for are your posture, such as slouching, folding your arms, or protecting your neck, eye movements, head movements, and hand movements. It will also scan tone for your vocal cues, such as placing stress or emphasis on certain words, stutters, or taking long pauses. So check your volume and don't talk too loudly or too softly into the microphone.

Answer Example
"I would say that one of my strengths is my approach to generating creative solutions to problems. I am swift in solving problems and coming up with outside-of-the-box solutions. I consider my attitude one of my strengths. To me, nothing is impossible and where there is a will, there is a way. I'd also say I have a level head, and maintain my calm even in the most severe storms. I could come up with more, but I will stop with those, as those are the most common observations my teammates have made about me, and I wholeheartedly agree with them."

6. Why are you interested in working for Boeing?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
In any interview, you can expect a few similarly phrased questions to come your way. This tests your attention to detail, the originality and sincerity of your answers, and your experience level based on how well you answer each question. You'll likely be asked about your career goals, why they should hire you, and why you want to work for them. Each question is unique. With this question, they are curious about what particularly sold you on the idea that this would be a great place to work. Was it their values, their culture, ESG goals, DEI efforts, or something else? Determine why you feel working for Boeing is the perfect fit for you while trying not to repeat the same answer to various questions. Lastly, by informing them which of their recruitment efforts had the greatest effect on you, you'll be helping them with their goal of more successfully attracting their target talent.

How to Prep
On their website, Boeing offers the advice that you "take your time. During your interview, don't talk too quickly. Be complete, but don't go overboard. When answering questions, make sure to be thorough in your responses, while being concise in your wording." This is good advice, especially since HireVue will allow you up to three minutes to record each answer. You'll only be given roughly 20-30 seconds between when the question appears on your screen and when the assessment model starts recording your response. Some questions may take longer to answer than others, but only take as much time as you need. Don't try to run out the clock or allow it to cut you off. Be as succinct as possible. There are no retakes and you will only be allowed this one opportunity to record your answers.
So when communicating your thoughts, maintain a moderate pace and tone to exude a relaxed and confident demeanor. Speaking too quickly can project an impression of nervousness. Additionally, select your words thoughtfully. Take time to explore terms that resonate with you and align with your natural vocabulary.

"There are many reasons why working for Boeing is at the top of my list. Setting aside their culture and values and all of that, I am most drawn to the brand of innovators the company attracts. I am determined to rise to being the best of the best, and in order for me to reach those goals, I want to work with the best of the best. I am also very interested in the smart factory and human robotics divisions of the company. Lastly, I have friends who work for the company, and am already familiar with the culture here. And nothing feels like a better fit to me."

7. What makes our company stand apart from our competitors?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is designed to assess your work ethic. They'll use how thoroughly you've prepared for this question as a future job performance indicator. Your answer may also offer clues as to whether you are currently pursuing opportunities with their competitors, how plugged into the industry you are, and help them further understand whether you actually want to work for them over one of their competitors.
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
What You Need to Know
On their website, Boeing suggests you "take some time to learn how we've driven innovation for more than 100 years. Explore our history and learn about what guides us, including our values, global community engagement, commitment to diversity and inclusion, and the environment."
They go on to define what makes them unique and sets them apart. "Our products and services span every facet of aerospace technology, from hypersonics to satellites, solar cells to biofuels, composite airplanes to unmanned vehicles. With more than $3 billion invested annually in research and development, Boeing drives innovation that will transform aerospace and defense as we know it. There's more innovation underway today at Boeing than at any time in our storied history. Making it all possible is the ingenuity and passion Boeing employees and global partners demonstrate when developing innovations that help blaze new trails. Teams across the global Boeing network are transforming how we design and build our products, the systems that enable us to work more efficiently, and the work we do to improve the environmental performance of our products and internal operations."

This question will help evaluate how invested you are in this opportunity, and your level of confidence in whether you're the right fit for it, and are pursuing it for the right reasons. When researching their website, you'll be able to find language that, in one way or another, effectively answers many of the questions posed throughout your interview set. Take note of their language and value statements and integrate them into your language to communicate you already are a custom fit for their culture and live according to their values. But do so naturally and with sincerity.

Answer Example
"I would say that Boeing stands apart from their competitors by not just being a leader in the defense industry, but a leader in the commercial aircraft industry as well. Not to mention they are at the forefront of innovation and a leader in ESG and a more sustainable future. But what stands apart most for me, knowing people who work with Boeing, are its people. The people at Boeing are, in my mind, what sets them apart most from their competitors."

Competency
8. What would you do if you witnessed someone doing something unsafe at work? Describe your approach and the actions you'd take in such an event.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is aimed at helping them determine whether your behaviors would align with their code of conduct. How you answer will potentially inform them of whether you would be an asset or a liability. According to Boeing's code of ethical conduct, they expect every employee to make the same commitment, "In everything we do and in all aspects of our business, we will make safety our top priority, strive for first-time quality, hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards, and continue to support a sustainable future. I will prioritize safety, quality, and integrity above profit, schedule, or competitive edge. If I see something that raises a safety concern, I will speak up immediately."
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
What You Need to Know
Look up their code of conduct and their compliance and ethics statements online, which can be found in pdf form with a simple search. "At Boeing, our goal for employee safety is as clear and simple as our workplace safety program's name: Go for Zero - One Day at a Time. We aim to achieve this goal day by day by eliminating all workplace injuries and ensuring an environment where all employees go home in the same shape they came to work. Our Safety Guiding Principles outline the meaning of zero injuries and demonstrate Boeing's commitment to driving safety for all employees, one day at a time."

How to Prep
All candidates applying to a position will receive the same set of questions, selected by the hiring company when building out their interview on HireVue's platform. HireVue prevents candidates from seeing these interview questions beforehand. "This ensures that each candidate has the same amount of time to review the questions, and prepare their responses, giving all candidates the same interview experience and an equal shot at putting their best foot forward." HireVue does, however, offer practice questions on its website to prepare candidates for the process. "While virtual interviewing isn't difficult, a little practice can help you prepare. Most on-demand interviews ask you to give your answer in just a few minutes. It's helpful to think about how you will illustrate your skills clearly in that timeframe, and to practice them out loud."
While these practice questions won't directly apply to Boeing, it's still a useful exercise to make yourself more comfortable with this type of interview. It's useful for practicing delivering your answers within the allotted three-minute timeframe. Once you've tried out HireVue's practice questions, come back to this MockQuestions set, and spend ample time practicing using this interview set. Set your timer for three minutes, and practice answering each question out loud while recording yourself on your computer.
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
Answer Example
"I would have a word with them, and warn them of the consequences of their unsafe actions. I would express that I needed them to be safe because I care. And, if I got through to them, and they promised they wouldn't repeat the transgression, I would inform my leaders and tell them of the outcome. If the person didn't take my request seriously, and they were likely to repeat the behavior, I would inform my leadership of that, and advise that they address the matter as well."
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
Conflict
9. Describe a time you faced a conflict at work. Describe how you addressed it and the outcome of your actions.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The assessment model will evaluate your answer to determine your emotional intelligence, your mediation skills, your communication skills, diplomacy, and conflict resolution. How you answer will also help determine how aligned you are with their values. For example, another commitment Boeing expects of their employees in their code of conduct is to "treat my colleagues with respect and understand that harassment will not be tolerated. At its core, it's about care. It's about caring for the person next to you, no matter your differences. That's why we begin by cultivating a culture of care and trust, a culture that meets people where they are and supports them in achieving their goals."
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
What You Need to Know
HireVue's assessment models will categorize its findings by evaluating "the content of your message, the meaning in your message, and the emotion you express." It assesses your emotional intelligence based on your choice of words, verbal and non-verbal cues, while rating how empathetic it thinks you are, whether you possess impulse control, strong non-defensive communication skills, negotiation skills, and persuasion skills. Remember, often when a person recalls a conflict situation, the emotions of the recalled event will manifest through non-verbal cues, such as narrowing your eyes, folding your arms, and furrowing your brow as you relate your story.
Written by Samantha Brown on November 28th, 2023
How to Prep
When delivering your answers, try not to be in the emotional state of that moment. Objectify the situation, exhibiting an emotionally mature perspective. Come across as grounded, confident, and stable, while not regressing into the emotion of that conflict when recalling it. If the example you've thought of doesn't allow you to remove yourself emotionally and observe it situationally, think of another.
Also, avoid trying to come across as a strong figure. Such posturing, such as holding your head high or folding your arms, could be interpreted as insecure, closed-off, unapproachable, hostile, or disinterested. So avoid such defensive behaviors, posturing, or movements. True strength comes from within and is best relayed when coming across as confident and relaxed. Practice being in the emotional state you want to convey. You want your answer to resonate with authentic sincerity.

Experienced Example
"A few months ago, I walked by the conference room and heard raised voices from behind the door. I listened for a moment and recognized the voices of two of my peers. So I poked my head in. They paused and filled me in on the cause of the conflict between them and were both visibly upset. After hearing them out, it was clear this was a communication problem and nothing more, as they were both saying the same thing from different perspectives. So I challenged them with some communication tactics. I got them each to allow the other person to speak without interruption of any kind. If one of them so much as rolled their eyes, we started over. Then I got them each to mirror each other, so they were in fact heard, and the opportunity was provided for clarification. I then mirrored them both and revealed they were both saying the same thing. I suggested that this conflict couldn't have possibly been sparked by agreeing with each other. Rather, their communication was flawed. I injected some work-appropriate humor into the situation, got them both laughing, and soon they were shaking hands."

Critical Thinking
10. Describe a time you had to make a time-sensitive decision without all the information you required. What steps did you take, and what was the outcome?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question is aimed at evaluating your approach to problem-solving, assessing risk, and your approach to risk-taking when faced with the unexpected. How a candidate answers this question will help them distinguish those who take informed and calculated risks from those who are habitual risk takers and those who are risk averse. Boeing describes their attitude toward risk-taking on their website where they state that they "reward predictability and stability everywhere in our business. Instituting predictability and stability across our business will support our priorities and prepare us to face the unexpected. While it's important to acknowledge extraordinary efforts to overcome unplanned obstacles to our work, it's even more important to establish and celebrate the everyday planning, execution and discipline that set us up for success."

HireVue's customizable interview guides, crafted by their IO psychology research teams, empower the assessment model to pose relevant questions that elicit responses it can analyze to predict job performance. Therefore, each of HireVue's assessments is tailored to match the specific requirements of a particular role, employing clear performance indicators to evaluate candidates. These customizations enable their assessment models to effectively distinguish the most promising and least promising performers. Additionally, the model identifies the skills and characteristics most crucial for success in that specific position, identifying candidates who align with the company's objectives and culture.

How to Prep
"During your HireVue assessment interview, the AI will evaluate your overall communication skills. This assessment encompasses your choice of words, the message you convey, the structure of your storytelling, and your fluency of speech. Be mindful of unintentional signals that could lead the assessment model to misinterpret your answers. Record yourself to ensure you're not sending any unintended verbal or nonverbal cues. However, remain authentic. Excessively rehearsing your responses can make you appear wooden and uninspiring. Take time to reflect on your intended message and practice speaking in a natural and evenly paced tone. Enunciate your words clearly, avoiding stutters or prolonged pauses. Minimize the use of verbal fillers like "like," "um," or "you know." By following these guidelines, you'll project yourself as a clear communicator and a poised professional."

Experienced Example
"We had an order for some large equipment which was currently in assembly. We were on target to meet our deadline, when a shipment for a crucial component arrived damaged. Our supplier held themselves accountable, and without being prompted, committed to replacing the hardware. But they explained replacing that component would take time, and they could replace it with another brand from a different manufacturer which they had an abundance of in stock. If we did replace it with the alternate component, we would've made our delivery deadline. However, the stakes were too high. We'd never tested that manufacturer's hardware before, and taking a gamble on an unknown was a risk I wasn't willing to take. So I asked our supplier to do what they could to expedite the replacement shipment. I then calculated the delay, looked at every method to manage our project to make up for lost time, and informed our client of the window of the delay, informing them with transparency on our decision and thought processes."

Diligence
11. How would you react if you discovered a coworker was engaged in unethical conduct? What actions would you take?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to assess your integrity by evaluating the honesty of your responses, and whether your conduct aligns with Boeing's code of ethical conduct. Answer with sincerity and authenticity. The assessment vendor will scrutinize your performance for any indications of discomfort or dishonesty. Verbal cues they'll analyze to identify potential exaggeration or deception include slowly repeating the question, fragmented sentences, shifts in speech patterns, irregular speech, and fluctuations in tone. They'll also note emphasis or stress on specific words, stutters, or prolonged pauses. Non-verbal signs of dishonesty include chin-stroking, mouth or eye covering, gaze avoidance, excessive fidgeting such as restless foot and leg movements, frequent posture changes, and grooming behaviors like hair twirling or finger-to-lip gestures. Additional data points the assessment vendor will evaluate include your posture, such as slouching, arm-folding, or neck protection. They'll also monitor your facial expressions, eye and head movements, and hand gestures.

How to Prep
Relax all the muscles in your face, and when smiling, smile softly with both your mouth and your eyes. Keep your body language open, and your tone steady, even, and consistent with your statements. You want to come across as being in your comfort zone and relaxed, be at ease, speak with confidence, and come across as if you are speaking to a real person, maintaining eye contact with the camera. Remember, looking at yourself on the screen could be interpreted as looking down, which is a sign of a lack of confidence.

"I would ask them to take a different path. I would also ask them whether they preferred to be the person to inform our supervisors of their conduct, right then and there, or if they preferred I do it. If they asked me why I would do such a thing, I would inform them that they put me in this position, not the other way around, and would explain that I am committed to keeping my word to uphold the company's code of ethics and conduct, which are aligned with my own because it is the right thing to do, and that I always keep my word and do what I say I am going to do."

12. Tell us about how you balance the demands on your personal life with your professional life.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
Boeing recognizes the benefit of helping their employees have a strong work-life balance. It helps their people avoid burnout syndrome, increases job satisfaction, and contributes to employee retention. In some of their global offices, Boeing even provides an emotional well-being coaching benefit to improve employees' emotional well-being, help them navigate change, and have better work-life balance. But before considering any hire, they need to ensure they have a strong foundation for a balanced professional and personal life. This will aid them in ensuring they don't bring someone on board who habitually brings their personal problems with them to work, or chronically runs behind on their deadlines and brings their work home.

Boeing offers a guide online providing tips for virtual interviews. "Don't worry if you're feeling a little anxious. You're not alone. If job interviews weren't already stressful, virtual interviewing which has its own nuances, whether it's family members or roommates making surprise appearances, audio delays creating awkward silences, or your dog barking at the delivery person. Many job seekers are learning how to navigate this new, virtual territory. If choosing a location, consider whether it might come with distractions such people, cars, or puppies. Remove distractions that are within your control. Find a quiet spot that's free of background noise. Pets or visitors could easily distract your interview. Also, close the window if it's noisy outside, put your phone on silent, and limit on-screen distractions that are within your control by exiting out of browsers and other applications not in use, and silence phones, tablets, and smart home devices."
HireVue offers conflicting advice, likely with the aim of separating unqualified candidates from top performers. On one page they suggest a candidate "Pick a spot free from distractions and noise." But another webpage says, "If your dog barks or kid runs across the screen, it's okay. Just relax. If your kid runs across the screen. It's okay. Your employer will understand, and if they don't, perhaps it's not the right culture fit for you. And that's okay. This is your time to showcase who you are and what you can add to an organization. Prepare, take a deep breath, and be yourself."
Remember, it is the job of the recruiter to ensure they find the right fit for their company. They've recruited HireVue to help them distinguish top performers from underperformers. How well you have prepared for your interview is the first step in showcasing you are a professional who strives to be a top performer. Ensure you are in a relatively quiet room free of distractions with as little background noise as possible. If you're not home alone, give everyone a heads-up that you are about to record your interview and ask them to be respectfully quiet. If this is not an option, wait for an opportunity to be alone. Remember, you can record your interview anytime, anywhere.

I also set aside unscheduled time to tend to the mundane aspects of either sphere and set myself up for success with both. This helps me uphold my commitments, and ensures my personal life doesn't interrupt my workday while ensuring I manage my time well enough to ensure I can accomplish my work in my workday and that it never bleeds over into my personal life."

Discovery
13. Tell us about yourself.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This initial question is aimed at getting to know the real you. A recruiter has to get a feel for your true personality to help determine your fit and how effectively you would serve as a representative of their brand. It also helps them ascertain how well you would build relations and collaborate with the teams you'll be joining. This is why, on their website, Boeing insists you "Let your personality shine. Showing your personality through phone or video may feel awkward, but authenticity is valued. We're not only interested in your qualifications and work experiences, we want to get a sense of all the things that make you, you. Share your unique perspective, experiences, and personal interests. Be yourself during your interview, be curious and ask us questions. Be your authentic self."

What You Need to Know
The HireVue platform provides each employer with a database of strategic questions in their "interview guides", which consist of a preset system on their platform, where each company can choose from categorized interview questions that best apply to them and narrow them down from several sub-categories. These customized interview sets assist in recruiting talent most suited to their company's goals and culture. Most questions will be in the form of situational judgment questions, where you'll be asked what actions to take when confronted with a hypothetical situation. This offers what they call a structured interview process, arguing that "unstructured interviews create opportunities for unconscious bias and poor hiring decisions." They suggest using their services results in "structured interviews that ensure consistent talent assessment for fairer hiring."
HireVue's AI, which they label as their "assessment models," will record your interview, and assess data points from your responses by focusing on "skills, behaviors, and competencies specific to the job." It will study your adaptability, composure, communication, compassion, confidence, dependability, drive for results, emotional intelligence, general skills, initiative, integrity, safety and compliance, and willingness to learn, to name a few. The assessment model will attempt to classify your experience level for each focus point into five categories: novice, developing, intermediate, advanced, and expert. It will compile its findings into a candidate insight report, placing you somewhere on the scale between an unqualified candidate to a top performer. It will also submit the recorded interview, allowing the hiring authority to view each candidate's responses side by side if they so prefer, where the hiring decision will ultimately be made by the recruiter.

Even though this interview is not live, where you can interact with your interviewer, keep in mind it will eventually be viewed by them. So, even though you are talking to the algorithm, you want to keep your eye on the fact that the recruiter is still your audience, albeit removed from your view. Showing your personality will go a long way here. So constantly imagine you are speaking to a real person. Try to come across as relaxed as possible, speaking in a level, yet enthusiastic, tone. Maintain eye contact with your computer camera, and smile softly. Confidence, poise, and natural is the demeanor you want to strike. Spend time structuring your answers beforehand, keeping in mind the message you want to send. Compose a brief bio of who you are as a person and as a professional. Briefly detail where your career journey has taken you, and how it has led you here. Give your answers substance and be personable.

HireVue advertises their assessments focus on skills and competencies, not age, race, or gender. "We also continue to advance our abilities to monitor, detect, and mitigate bias. We strive to build teams from diverse backgrounds with diverse knowledge, experiences, and perspectives to best represent the people our systems serve." Regardless of your background or self-perceived cultural competence, demonstrating genuine interest, openness, and curiosity is crucial when conveying cultural competence. Nonverbal indicators of these emotions include leaning in, tilting your head as you speak, smiling, and maintaining eye contact. Conversely, signs of discomfort and avoidance can be interpreted as indicators of negative bias and antipathy. Such nonverbal cues include decreased positivity, reduced eye contact and more gaze aversion, fewer smiles, greater interpersonal distance, and increased blinking. Consider these points when formulating your answer to ensure you project a positive and culturally sensitive demeanor.

But I don't think my education ended there. I am still in touch with my professors who served as mentors for me, and I still attend lectures and seminars, am constantly reading, whether it's periodicals or books, and am very interested in furthering my education where I can fit it into my schedule. I was very attracted to the academic opportunities Boeing offers to their employees as well. But I would say that my educational journey is hopefully never-ending."

They had some good points, and I immediately recognized that this suggestion, regardless of its delivery, was worth taking to heart, I thanked them and promised to work on implementing a new habit for this issue. I then asked them if there were any other concerns they'd like to express, and they said no. So I then went to lunch, and that was when I realized I'd inadvertently parked in their parking space. Put on your best outfit for a confidence boost. Your clothes should be appropriate for the role you're interviewing for. While only the top half of your body will be visible, put on your entire outfit. You never know if you'll need to stand up mid-interview." HireVue offers similar advice. "We recommend that you wear exactly what you would for a traditional face-to-face interview. This HireVue assessment model is custom-tailored to Boeing's needs. Their pre-established criteria are designed to identify candidates who are aligned with their company's culture. So before you interview, conduct thorough research to understand the types of leaders and leadership qualities they seek in their potential hires. Then, compare their expectations with your own strengths and experiences, and present yourself in a way that effectively aligns with their desired leadership profile.
Regardless of whether you've held an official leadership position, reflect on the leadership experiences you've had, and examine which of those align with the culture of leadership Boeing fosters. One of Boeing's recruiters offers the following advice on their site: "Think beyond your work experience. Use experience and knowledge that you've gained outside of work, such as school or volunteer committees, if those experiences are relevant to the question."

22. Please describe a time you had to change your course of action while working on an assignment. Describe the situation, your actions, and the result.
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
This question aims to determine how organized you are, and how effectively you manage multiple priorities at the same time without losing momentum or productivity on any one thing. Boeing has a saying, "Apply Lean principles - eliminate traveled work." Traveled work is a term in commercial airplane manufacturing and assembly that refers to work that is delayed or needs to be finished in a different location than originally planned. Having to transport materials or components to another location and then, at a later date, proceed with the work results in significant delays.

What You Need to Know
HireVue defines Adaptability as "the ability to shift or change opinions, actions, or behaviors when faced with multiple demands, shifting priorities, rapid change, or ambiguity." They describe someone who reacts negatively to change and is concerned about the extra effort they will have to put forth to adjust to that change as a novice. They also state that a novice doesn't seek information to understand the need for change, does not effectively adjust their behavior as required to meet the demands of the situation, and someone who requires a supervisor or manager to make the necessary changes. They also state they are more likely to not react quickly in time-sensitive situations in the face of change.
They state someone with intermediate experience as someone who is likely to be dependable but needs assistance in more difficult situations, someone who may be initially reluctant to accept the change but can see positive aspects after internalizing the change. They understand the change is needed as a part of the job requirement and adjust their behavior within a reasonable timeframe to meet the demands of a moderate to difficult change and require minimal guidance.
And, they describe an expert as someone who views change as a challenge and an opportunity to advance toward mutual goals, possesses a positive attitude, shares their vision, inspires others, is a role model, and quickly modifies their plans accordingly. An expert is resourceful and decisive, taking action with a degree of informed, calculated risk.

Experienced Example
"At my current job, we have several teams who coordinate with each other. It's a fairly fast-paced environment, and sometimes we have to drop everything to address a high-priority issue on another team. This has happened enough that I've developed checks and balances for all of my work, every step of the way. That way, when I have to drop what I am doing, I'm able to ensure there's no need to perform any rework or lose time trying to pinpoint where I left off on a task. My transitions are smooth, and I can leap from project to project with little stress, feeling self-assured in my ability to transition. Just recently, I was compiling data into our proprietary software, and the task can be quite involved, and quite tedious. We were then all called to help out elsewhere. This system can be difficult to navigate, but I developed a chart that allows me to trace my steps and recreate the exact place where I left off. This system saves me forty-five minutes worth of rework every time."

How to Prep
Throughout your interview, you want to convey in real time that you possess the logic and common sense you claim to. So arrive at your interview well-prepared. Boeing suggests you "Start setting up early. Technical issues happen. Test your technology early so you can be on time and make a good impression. Check your connection. Make sure your location has a good internet connection and conduct a test run with your computer to ensure the technology works as expected." HireVue also advises you to "ensure you've got the strongest Wi-Fi signal possible." Check that your microphone is working properly. Use the restroom before you begin. Have a glass of water ready in case you need it during the interview. Make yourself comfortable.

Answer Example
"In my last position, our teams had complained for a while about the number of steps involved in a particular task of the job. So, I started evaluating the system for this and started asking our leadership teams some questions about it. They explained that some time back there was an employee who continually skipped several important steps, and the shortcuts they were taking often resulted in the job not being done right and in unnecessary rework. The employee was no longer with the company, and the bureaucratic system outlasted them. So I asked if they would be open to me coming up with a better way of doing it. They said yes. So I looked at this whole thing from outside of both factors and came up with a way that made the shortcut the right way to do it. This eliminated not only the bureaucratic steps, boosted morale, but also sped up the initial task itself."

Salary
24. What are your salary expectations?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
The assessment vendor is asking you to make a case for your professional worth. Consider that when you deliver a strong interview, showcasing how thoroughly prepared you are, and positioning yourself as a top performer, you have been showcasing your professional worth throughout the interview. It is not recommended to start negotiations in an on-demand interview, so this is something of a test as to how nimbly you can navigate this delicate question.

How to Prep
Your nonverbal cues will almost always be interpreted as your true feelings. So, when speaking to your professional worth, you want to exude the body language of a confident and relaxed person. If you don't believe you are worth what you say you are, no one else will. Research the body language of a confident and relaxed person in a seated position. Pump yourself up with physical exercise to manifest confidence. Go into a private space with a mirror, look yourself in the eye, and give yourself a pep talk. Raise your arms, stretch your back, and make yourself as big as possible. Then practice your answers in front of the camera and record your voice to cast away any insecurity, nervousness, or self-doubt. Share what you have to offer and why you believe it. Keep your body language open and unguarded, arms resting on the armrests of your chairs, and hands open and relaxed. Lean forward, make eye contact with your camera, and keep your shoulders lowered and relaxed. Show them that you know how you stand out from the other candidates.

How to Answer
Refrain from delving into salary negotiations during a recorded assessment video, providing any specific figure, or even a pay range. Instead, emphasize your professional worth through quantifiable achievements and contributions you've detailed throughout your interview, and on your resume and cover letter. If you are comfortable doing so, disclose your current salary, your projected earnings and increases, and the frequency of the pay increases you expect to receive in your current position. If your current employer attempted to retain you through incentives, mention this as a testament to your professional worth. Consider any other factors that affect your cost of living and determine if they are worth mentioning. Finally, conclude by expressing your career aspirations for the next one to two years, reiterating your value proposition to Boeing, and share your hope to continue this discussion in person.

Answer Example
"My current annual salary is $68,000, with two bonus opportunities tied to company profits. Given my consistent performance, I've been promised by my current employer to expect to receive two 5% raises this year, should I stay on board. Your benefits package is quite attractive, and all components except the retirement plan align with my current benefits, where my current employer matches 50% of my contributions continually throughout my employment. I'm hoping for a compensation package proportionate to the role, with outlined growth opportunities. I'm hopeful to discuss more specifics in greater detail in person."

Teamwork
25. How do you go about building professional relationships and earning trust?
Why the Interviewer Asks This Question
There are many categories HireVue's AI assessment models will evaluate a candidate's skills for, and one is how well a candidate works with others. The algorithm will study each candidate to determine where they fall on the scale of being an extrovert, ambivert, and extrovert. It will also evaluate their relationship-building skills, their communication skills, how collaborative and team-orientated they are while coordinating with others, and whether they invest in developing their coworkers and teams. How you answer will address many of these, while additionally informing them of how aligned you are with Boeing's brand of teamwork and collaboration.

What You Need to Know
Boeing states in their code of conduct that they expect all of their employees to consistently earn stakeholder trust. "By committing fully to our values, communicating with transparency, and delivering results with excellence, we will earn and retain the confidence of our customers, suppliers and investors; our team members; and everyone who uses our products and services."

How to Prep
When exploring how you would build relationships with, and earn the trust of, their teams, keep in mind that their code repeatedly states they expect their employees to conduct themselves with integrity, transparency, and humility. Nonverbal cues for humility and open friendliness are leaning forward, slightly tilting your head, nodding slowly, keeping your palms open, maintaining eye contact, smiling softly, and slightly raising your eyebrows. Posture yourself in a relaxed and comfortable position.

Answer Example
"I am a firm believer that if you want to earn someone's trust, you have to give them your trust first. So I build relationships by being open, friendly, and transparent with who I am. I approach building relationships humbly, asking them questions about who they are, and asking for their input and advice as I get oriented. I show them I am a hard and smart worker, that I'll earn my keep and contribute in kind. I work hard on building their trust in that I am one of them, and will do what it takes to help out the team."
