I would say the main competitors are Akzo Nobel N.V. and Arkema while, moving to a somehow bigger size, BASF, Dow Chemical Company, and Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corporation.
To me what makes Solvay different is its ability to adapt to a changing world and competition as demonstrated by its long history starting in 1863.
