I rely heavily on data, but also make sure to compare the results of different channels, as one campaign may work very well on social where another will not."

      "In my current role, I have pre-determined benchmarks for KPIs such as click-through rates and quality of acquired leads. Looking at the data surrounding these targets will help me to understand better if an advertisement is a win or a loss. When an ad appears to be a flop, our team will pull it right away and give a further push to the one that is performing up to expectations."

      "In my current role we have a staff of 450 people within ten departments. Any given week, I will collaborate with marketing, sales, and social media departments. These are the departments with which I collaborate most often. I believe that everyone has a great deal of value to offer, so, for that reason, I embrace every opportunity to collaborate cross-departmentally."

      "I look forward to getting to know your marketing, sales, and production teams here at NBCUniversal. Currently, in my internship, I have spent two weeks in each department, getting to know the ins and outs of online publishing, design, marketing, sales, and even public relations. The experience has been invaluable."

      When you are working on content meant for public consumption, it's vital that you keep in mind the ways that you will deliver the material, the tone you want to convey in your messaging, and who you wish to reach.       "The right form of communication is vital to any successful broadcast or production. I believe that the most important factors include actively polling and listening to your viewers, having a clear vision when it comes to tone, and also garnering strong community. When the public feels they are a part of something important, and that you are speaking their language, they are much more likely to engage with your programming."

      "The absolute key to success, in my opinion, is to create community buy-in. When the public is engaged, the people will tell you what they want to see more of, allowing you to better communicate with them from the start. I believe in listening, comprehending, retaining core ideas, clearly sharing your own, and responding constructively."

    What are the top critical KPIs for an advertising client?

      Advertising clients look at a multitude of KPIs when they invest in advertising efforts. When it comes to digital, some crucial factors are:

      - Click-Through Rates (CTR)
      - Cost Per Action (CPA)
      - Conversion Rate
      - Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

      ...and many more! Then, when it comes to print or traditional advertising, the KPIs change slightly, and there is more focus placed on things like response rates. Discuss with the interviewer what you believe to be the most important KPIs for an advertising client.

      "I believe that the most important KPI for an advertising client is the Conversion Rate. The entire reason we launch effective advertising campaigns is to gain a larger customer base. Other KPIs are significant; however, I believe the Conversion Rate to be the most important one."

      Rachelle's Answer

      "In my opinion, sales revenue it the true indicator of an advertising campaigns efficacy. Every advertising client should be able to know and understand if their inbound marketing campaign has brought them more business."

    Has a brand ever built an emotional connection with you using marketing? If so, tell me how they accomplished this connection.

      The interviewer wants to know if any corporate marketing efforts have resonated with you in the past. It's essential that you discuss any marketing efforts that have stuck with you, and be prepared to talk about what you believe was done right, to make this connection happen. The example that you mention does not have to be a marketing effort led by NBCUniversal but bonus points if you mention their past work!

      "The most memorable emotional connection that I have experienced from a marketing effort would be between Coca-Cola and the Olympics. It was fascinating to learn that Coca-Cola was the first commercial sponsor of the Olympic Games in 1928. Today, there aren't many people who can keep a dry eye when watching the emotionally driven Olympics commercials; myself included. This strong connection builds through the idea of longstanding relationships, pride in country, and community connection. The Olympic Games resonate globally, which makes this partnership especially impactful."

      "Budweiser's Superbowl ad from 2013 called 'Brotherhood' is one that impacted me so much that I still think about it all of these years later. As an animal lover and sports enthusiast, this ad about the connection between a man and his horse was heartfelt and easy to connect with."

    The news runs 24/7. How do you feel about an overnight shift, working on weekends, and holidays?

      It is vital to NBCUniversal that you offer flexibility in your schedule. Since the news never stops, neither will NBCUniversal and their news reporting efforts. Discuss your calendar with the interviewer, highlighting any limitations that you may have. Be as flexible as possible, showing that you are a team player.

      "In my current role, I worked the overnight shift for eight years. Through my tenure and solid news programming work, I earned a seat in the daytime news operation. This shift is my preference for any roles moving forward. With that said, I have no issue working overtime or jumping into the odd overnight shift to help out my team."

      "Being new to my career in news programming, I fully understand that I should take the types of roles offered to me at this time. If NBCUniversal has overnight shifts with some overtime, weekends, and holidays then count me in. I am looking forward to carving out a career with NBCUniversal and have no issue starting where I am needed."

    If you could pitch an idea for a news segment today, what would it be?

      The interviewer would like to get to know you apart from your resume. Since there are multiple areas of interest when it comes to the news (current events, sports, politics, etc.), NBCUniversal wants to uncover what sparks and motivates you the most. Discuss an idea you would pitch for a news show today if you had full control. Be sure to show excitement and enthusiasm!

      "I love to pitch show ideas, and I have a running document with ideas that come to me throughout the day. I am working on smoothing a few of them out right now. One of these ideas is a show on emerging female athletes in our region. I believe there are so many talented girls out there who could use an extra boost of funding and community support. If you're interested, I would be happy to flesh that idea out further and formally pitch it once I begin working for NBCUniversal."

      "I would love to gain more experience when it comes to pitching news segments. I am very dedicated when it comes to political topics and reporting. I would pitch a news segment giving viewers an insiders' look at how campaigns are built and won. I find this topic fascinating, and am sure your audience would as well."

      "In my current role, I will collaborate with a variety of groups every single day. One day I may be working with the social media creatives and the human resources department, while also juggling multiple talent agents. The next day, I could be collaborating with a whole other group. I enjoy the challenge and the variety of communication that comes with working in this type of environment."

      "As a recent graduate, my experience working in cross-collaborative environments is limited to my educational experience. While attending university, I worked with people of all personality types, needs, and approaches to work. I can pivot when needed, and can work with a variety of groups such as multiple NBCUniversal departments, clients, and vendors."

In my previous positions, I have always earned recognition for my great research skills. When you call my references, they will attest to this as well. There is always room for improvement, so for that reason, I would rate myself as an 8.5 out of 10 for research capabilities."

      "When it comes to research capabilities, I am most definitely a 10/10. An eleven even, if that is allowed! I love researching a large range of products and am very data and analytically minded."

      As a broadcast, news, or live programming professional, you are aware of the fact that there are many unreliable and irrelevant sources of information out there. Walk the interviewer through the steps you take to ensure that the sources you work with are credible.

      "I believe that a credible source is one that is unbiased and can be backed by facts. It's also important to ensure that the source is current and relevant to the intended audience. These are the factors that I always check into to ensure the information I receive is relevant and reliable."

      "Relevant and reliable information and data are what sets trusted programming apart from the untrustworthy. When I need to gather information from multiple, or even new sources, I do a lot of digging to make sure that everything said can be backed by true and current facts. During my internship, I performed a lot of work related to fact-checking and ensuring our sources were credible. I look forward to bringing what I learned during those weeks, to NBCUniversal."

      There are many effective social media advertising methods, including micro-blogging, influencer marketing, photo sharing, and video sharing. Discuss with the interviewer which two social media advertising efforts have been most effective for you, as of late.

      "At the moment, I have found that video sharing and influencer marketing have been the most effective social media advertising methods for my clients. I have learned a great deal about video ads this year. The customer engagement and conversion numbers with video are incredible."

      "Right now, the two most effective social media advertising methods have been IGTV, where I have created multiple advertorials and webinars that act as a lead generator to product specific landing pages. Also, I have learned how to harness the power of Twitter, which has been an incredible traffic booster for my clients' websites."

      "If given the opportunity to drive audience engagement for NBCUniversal, the first place I would look is where your target audience spends their most time, which I believe to be social media. I would create a unique hashtag along with a contest for free tickets to a release party or another coveted prize. I would use the opportunity to create a conversation around NBCUniversal latest television show or another exciting release."

      "I believe in a multi-channel approach, so I would begin by collaborating with NBCUniversal social media and digital departments to make engaging 15-second videos, like a series of teasers, for publishing on IGTV, YouTube, and other social networking sites where video content is king."

      A significant part of working on the film side of the business for NBCUniversal may mean working directly with talent, and their agents. The interviewer would like to see that you have the ability to maintain professional relationships with everyone you work with, no matter their status. If you have direct experience working with talent, walk the interviewer through your responsibilities on the talent side. If you do not have direct experience working with talent, assure the interviewer that you are capable of maintaining professional work relationships across the board.

      "In my current role, I recently took on the responsibility of assisting with the management and scheduling of talent on a couple of films. I felt that the experience was very eye-opening and allowed me to expand my knowledge and understanding of the film industry even further. Does this particular role with NBCUniversal have talent-facing opportunities?"

      "Although working directly with talent would be a responsibility new to me, it is one that I would eagerly take on. Utilizing my communications and customer service experience, I would be an excellent representative of NBCUniversal when working with any talent or their agents."

    At NBCUniversal you will be handling multiple projects at a time. When have you nearly missed a production timeline due to disorganization?

      Production deadlines are incredibly important. One missed deadline can throw a thousand deliverables out of balance, costing a studio or production company countless dollars. Talk to the interviewer about a time when you nearly missed a production deadline. Discuss how you caught the potential disaster, and pivoted to make sure that you met the timeline in the end. Be sure to mention what you learned in the process!

      "I handle dozens of deliverables in a day, making it a challenge to stay on top of it all. I nearly missed an important deadline because I delegated a few tasks to my assistant without checking in regularly. Since this incident, I have set up my work in a cloud-based task management system which my assistant and I share. I set up clear milestones, attached to dates and times; ensuring that we are on the same page all the times."

      "Tight deadlines are normal in the media industry, and I make a point of delivering early on everything as often as possible. Last month, I had a production deadline that offered half the working time as usual. I took my work home every night for a week to ensure that we met the deadline without the quality of work suffering; however, it just wasn't enough. At the eleventh hour, I called in reinforcements. It is sometimes hard for me to ask for help, but I know to set my ego aside for the good of the project."

    How is social media changing the way people consume news, today? What can NBCUniversal do to remain relevant?

      With 'fake news' running rampant, we are quick to blame online content and social media platforms for the misinformation. Today, people read an article or a post, share it, it goes viral, and before you know it, millions of people are misinformed about an important topic. However, it isn't all bad!

      Social platforms allow people, who may otherwise not take the time to sit down and watch a network news program, to stay in-the-know. Talk to the interviewer about what NBCUniversal can do to embrace this movement. Be sure to compliment them on the efforts they already have in place.

      "I believe that social media has changed the way people consume news today in both positive and harmful ways. We do have a lot more 'fake news' going on today, being spread rapidly due to the ease of social sharing. With that said, social media is now the primary source of news online, giving broadcasters a unique opportunity to put out omnichannel content, furthering their reach. From what I see, NBCUniversal is doing an excellent job in remaining relevant. My only suggestion would be to increase the content on Instagram's IGTV, which is relatively new but very relevant."

      "Social media is broadening the conversation to include people who would otherwise not take the time to be involved in current events. Take political campaigns these days, and how many more people are going out to vote or even becoming involved in social movements such as #metoo. I follow NBCUniversal closely on multiple channels and think you are doing an excellent job in remaining relevant and staying in the conversation. Creating viral hashtags is another valuable effort that I can help NBCUniversal with, should I be the successful candidate."
