Homesense Interview Questions

  1. 1.

What type of manager brings out the best in you?

The interviewer wants to see that you are self-aware and understand the type of manager or employer that brings out the best in you. Some individuals prefer a close working relationship with a lot of accountability, while others prefer space and autonomy. If you are unsure of the management style of the interviewing company, try to leave your answer as open as possible. You can certainly ask the interviewer to describe their management style.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"The best manager I ever had really embodied a servant-leadership paradigm. She made it common practice to have one-on-one meetings with each of her team members every month or so to talk about our engagement in the work as well as what she could be doing better to bring out our best. The fact that she asked how she could improve spoke volumes to me. She's a leader I really admire."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"When I first started out in retail, I felt really out of my depth. I had been working primarily desk jobs with limited interactions with others for several years, so the retail industry was a huge change. My manager was so patient and kind, and I really felt like she was invested in my success. She took time to train me in areas where I struggled, and I never once felt like she was frustrated with me or that I was expected to understand everything all at once."

  2. 2.

What type of work environment do you dislike working in?

At Homesense, we move fast -- we're always adapting, evolving, and innovating, and the fast pace brings variety as well as challenges. We recognize that this work environment isn't a great fit for everyone, so talk to the interviewer about any atmospheres you've had trouble working in in the past.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I can be productive in most work environments, so long as the mentality is positive and teamwork is encouraged. I cannot work in an environment that feels negative or toxic."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Rather than focusing on the negative, try spinning your answer into a positive focus: "I do best in a supportive environment where there is room to grow, the ability to ask questions, and healthy co-worker relationships."

      Anonymous Answer

"I really thrive in an atmosphere where co-workers get along, where there is always that potential for movement, and where I am recognized. I've worked in a toxic environment, and it became difficult to continue wanting to be there. It took its toll."

      Rachelle's Answer

Rather than ending on the negative, I recommend ending on the positive. I have reworked your response slightly below.

"I have worked in toxic environments that were unsupportive and find that I thrive in an atmosphere where co-workers get along, where there is always that potential for movement, and where I am recognized. I am confident that HomeSense provides a healthy work environment that I am seeking in my next opportunity."

What do you know about Homesense? Why do you want to work for us?

Homesense is a new kind of home store that invites our customers to discover aisles of unexpected finds from around the world. Our mission is to provide great value and unbeatable prices for our customers every day -- that's why our merchandise is 20%-60% below department and specialty store regular prices. What stands out to you about Homesense?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I love what Homesense has to say about giving customers a luxury shopping experience with a budget price tag. I really believe that everyone should have access to the best goods and services regardless of income level, and I would love to work for a company that is serving its communities in such an active, purposeful way."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I'm interested in working for Homesense because they have a business model that makes practical sense and the longevity and stability to back it up. I'm really looking to build a career in this industry, and I would love to do that with a company as stable and sturdy as Homesense."

  4. 4.

What do you hope to learn from this job at Homesense?

At Homesense, we believe it is our responsibility to train and mentor our associates for long-term success. That's why we offer a variety of training and development programs to help our associates take their careers wherever they want to go. Talk to the interviewer about what you're hoping to learn during your time at Homesense.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm interested in several different facets of the retail industry but haven't yet decided what direction I want to take my career. I'm excited about all of the learning opportunities available through Homesense, and I can't wait to dive in and find my home in the retail world!"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am looking to lay the foundation for the rest of my career with this position. I looked at a lot of job postings and had interviewed some very carefully selected places, but you are by far my front-runner. I want to learn not only the fundamentals of sales but also become comfortable with both sides of the business. I appreciate that you want me to start with the basics of the inside sales before moving into outside sales."

  5. 5.

We need reliable people on our team at Homesense. How many days were you absent from work last year?

A part of being a diligent employee is to ensure that you are always on time and present when expected. It's great to even be 10 minutes early rather than just showing up right on the dot. Talk to the interviewer about your attendance.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I had zero unexcused absences last year. In total, I took 12 vacation days out of my 15 allotted days. I was sick just 2, and a note from my Doctor accompanied those. Once I was late due to a terrible snow storm, and I always try to be 10 minutes early for my shift."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am very committed to my employer and am only absent in events of sickness or the odd family emergency. I do my best always to be available and present when expected."

      Anonymous Answer

"I am a very reliable person and do my best to be there when expected. If I commit to something, I see it through. It's difficult for everyone when others are unreliable."

      Rachelle's Answer

Try replacing your final sentence with less of a 'lesson' for the interviewer and more of a direct response to the question at hand. I have offered a revision below.

"I am a very reliable person and do my best to be there when expected. If I commit to something, I see it through. For that reason, I had zero unexcused absences from work in the past year."

  6. 6.

How would you handle a situation where a customer was flagged by our refund verification system?

Our customers are our top priority, so we welcome returns within 30 days with a register receipt. Unfortunately, many retailers are subject to fraudulent return activity, which is why we use a refund verification system to process and track returns in order to combat fraudulent activity. Talk to the interviewer about how you would handle a situation where a customer's return was flagged as fraudulent.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"The process at my current store for this situation is to provide the customer with a direct number to our fraud department and let them know that our system cannot process their return. I always make sure not to make the customer feel that I suspect them. What is the process for this situation at Homesense?"

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have some dispute resolution training from my previous retail position and fully believe that flexibility needs to be offered in extreme situations."

  7. 7.

At Homesense we firmly believe in grooming our employees into management roles as they show potential. Are you interested in potential leadership roles with us?

At Homesense, we strive to provide opportunities for learning and growth. We believe it is our responsibility to train and mentor our associates for long-term success. Talk to the interviewer about any interest you have in moving into a leadership or management role with Homesense in the future.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm really interested in the Leaders Developing Leaders program -- it's really encouraging to see that 50% of participants have received promotions. I'm looking to start building a career in the retail industry, and I think the opportunities that Homesense provide are exactly what I've been looking for to further my career."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have been in an unofficial leadership role for the past three years of my career. I believe that a management role with Homesense would be a great next step in my career."

  8. 8.

Tell me 3 qualities you possess that make you a strong fit for this position with Homesense.

Homesense is an exciting place to work, and we count on our associates to bring our business to life for our customers every day. We encourage our employees to bring their whole selves to work and provide their unique perspective on our business. Talk to the interviewer about some qualities that make you well-suited for this position with Homesense.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm an extremely professional person when I'm working. The workplace is for work, and in the retail industry, there's always something to do, even when there aren't many customers in the store. I balance my professionalism with my friendly, outgoing personality -- I think it's important to have fun and work hard at the same time. I also love decorating and organizing homes; I'm constantly being asked by my friends to help them with home improvement and redesign projects, so I would be really excited to talk to customers about their home decor and furniture purchasing needs."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I have a lot of qualities that transfer well into a retail-based position. The top ones would include my strong organization skills, my ability to have a conversation with anyone comfortably, and my solid work ethic/level of honesty."

      Anonymous Answer

"I am detail-oriented—good visual and spatial skills. I have good people skills. I am an excellent listener. I can break down really complex concepts, so they are easy to understand concepts."

      Rachelle's Answer

These are all excellent qualities to bring to this role. If possible, take some time to outline for the interviewer some of the ways that these skills will benefit HomeSense, should you be hired.

Was this answer helpful? Yes or No
  9. 9.

In a retail environment, staff turnover is often high. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift?

Being flexible in your schedule is valuable as a retail-based employee. How would you handle it if your co-worker did not show up for their shift and you were asked to cover? Assure the interviewer that you are a team player.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am more than willing to cover a shift for a co-worker if I am able. I don't mind accepting overtime hours and do consider myself to be a team player."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"If a co-worker failed to show up for their shift, I would pick it up if possible. I always strive to be a team player."

      Anonymous Answer

"I would work the shift if possible. Things happen, and I would hope someone would do that for me too."

      Rachelle's Answer

This is a good attitude and shows off a healthy team-based mindset. Be sure to express that you wouldn't 'no show' to work - just a slight wording issue that I addressed below.

"I would work the shift, if possible. I know that unexpected circumstances happen. Should I have an emergency and need coverage, I hope a team member would jump in to help, also."

Was this answer helpful? Yes or No
  10. 10.

What attracts you to working for an off-price retailer like Homesense?

At Homesense, we buy from the biggest department stores, the best designers, and unique boutiques around the world to provide our customers with the best products at the lowest prices. The Homesense way is different, and we're looking for passionate associates who believe in the Homesense way. Talk to the interviewer about why you want to work for an off-price retailer like Homesense.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm really passionate about the environment, and I love working in the retail industry, but I know the toll that some retailer's business practices take on our environment. Off-price retailers like Homesense do so much to reduce waste and keep products out of landfills and in the hands of customers, where they belong. I want to work for a company like Homesense so that I can continue to pursue my dream career and know that I'm doing my part for the environment at the same time."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I've had my share of financial hardships in my life, but I've always known that I can turn to Homesense when I need to spruce up my house and turn it into a home. I believe in the off-price business model, and I'm excited to share the benefits of this model with customers by being a brand ambassador for Homesense."

  11. 11.

This position requires a flexible schedule as we are open evenings, weekends, and most holidays. Are you able to commit to these hours?

The majority of Homesense stores are open from 9:30 AM - 9:30 PM daily, so your schedule should be able to accommodate shifts within this time frame. Talk to the interviewer about your availability.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I am happy to offer a flexible schedule, and to work overtime as needed. I do take an evening college course on Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I would not be available those days, after 5 PM."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I understand that this role will include working evenings, weekends, and holidays. I am available to work anytime and am happy to work overtime as well."

  12. 12.

Tell me about a time you had to handle conflict at work.

We've worked hard to create an exceptional company culture here at Homesense, but we know there's no way to prevent conflict from happening from time to time. Have you ever had a conflict with a coworker or manager? How did you resolve the issue?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"Many years ago, a coworker and I had an ongoing, unspoken issue between us from a situation that happened outside of work. We didn't talk about it, but I think everyone could feel the tension between us building. It finally erupted in an argument while we were at work, and our manager had to pull us aside and talk to us about our behavior. It was really embarrassing and uncomfortable, and I made a promise to myself never to let a conflict go on so long without addressing it. Now when I have an issue with something my coworker or manager has said or done, I take some time to cool off, then approach them with respect and kindness and let them know how their actions affected me. That's been a great strategy for me so far."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I've been lucky enough to never be involved in conflicts with a coworker, but I've definitely done my share of mediating between two coworkers before. The retail industry can be stressful, so naturally the stress gets to people from time to time. When I'm helping coworkers through conflict, I always make sure that I'm fully hearing both sides of the story and trying to get to the root of the hurt between them. I think the experience of having and resolving conflict can actually be really healthy -- it's made the teams I've been on that much stronger because it helps us all know how to respond to each other instead of react."

  13. 13.

Have you researched our company values? What makes you the best candidate for Homesense?

At Homesense, our culture is our secret weapon. We work hard to put our values of integrity, caring, ethics, and fairness into practice at our stores every day. Which of these values stands out to you the most? How would you make these values your own?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I like that caring is one of Homesense's core values -- I would definitely describe myself as a caring person. I love to help customers, but I also really enjoy being on a team with people who I feel connected to so that I can offer my help and support to them as well. That's something that's really important to me in a workplace, so I'm happy to see that Homesense's values align with my own."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"It's very important to me to work for a company with strong ethical behavior -- I can't work for a company whose values I can't stand behind. I know that if I worked at Homesense, I would be able to confidently tell people where I work and know that my employer's behavior in the world is something I can be proud of."

      Anonymous Answer

"I know that HomeSense is a company with strong ethical values. It's hard for me to work for a company that doesn't have strong and/or ethical values. I like to think that the company I work for enables me to say that I am an ethical person."

      Rachelle's Answer

This is a good start; however, it could use more specifics. Flexible, entrepreneurial, value-based, exciting selection are just some of the values expressed by HomeSense. How do these align with your skills and qualities? Try framing this answer in a positive manner vs. highlighting the negatives ('It's hard for me...' and 'Doesn't have...').

Was this answer helpful? Yes or No
  14. 14.

How do you like to be recognized for your accomplishments?

We strive to provide plenty of opportunities for growth and recognition here at Homesense, so the interviewer will want to hear how you appreciate being recognized for your accomplishments.

      Jordan's Answer #1

"I'm a pretty self-motivated person, so I don't require a lot of recognition when I do good work -- I think it's just part of my job to do my best! When I accomplish something really big, like the completion of a large project, I think it's nice to feel celebrated a little bit with a small gift card to a local restaurant -- that way, I can enjoy a meal with my partner and celebrate my accomplishments."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"I am very much an over-achiever and find that the best way for me to be recognized for a job well done is through words of kindness and recognition. I am easily encouraged, and the best reward for me is to know that my hard work is noticed."

      Anonymous Answer

"I need to know that my efforts and work are noticed. Acknowledgment is enough."

      Rachelle's Answer

Acknowledgment is very important. Do you prefer words of thanks or small rewards, for instance? Any specifics you can provide the interviewer would be helpful.

Was this answer helpful? Yes or No

At Homesense we like to hire strong achievers. Give me an example of a time when you went above and beyond.

At Homesense, it's very important to us to attract ambitious and talented individuals, teach them the fundamentals of our off-price model, offer them challenging assignments, and support their career growth. When have you gone above and beyond for your coworkers, supervisors, or customers?

      Jordan's Answer #1

"At my current job, I recently had a customer who was at a total loss about what she was looking for: she was living on her own for the first time and had always relied on roommates and partners for home furnishings in the past. I spent some time talking to her about her interests and passions and then I went around the store and put together a 'mini-display' of items I thought she would love. It was really fun to help her get started building her own decor aesthetic, and it felt great to exceed her expectations that day."

      Jordan's Answer #2

"Last week I noticed that my manager had not completed the schedule for the following week. Some of the staff were complaining that they didn't have their work schedule yet. Rather than going to my manager with the complaint, I offered to take on some of her workload so that she would have the time to complete the schedule. We worked together for a couple of overtime hours that day and were able to catch her up on everything. It felt good to help but also benefited me by way of organization."
