The interviewer would like to learn more about your employment history prior to completing nursing school. If you worked in healthcare, that's great experience to share, even if it was in a volunteer or administrative capacity. That exposure to medical terminology and other aspects of patient care will add value in your first nursing position. If you don't have healthcare experience, that's okay because you likely have transferable skills from other roles that would also add value. For example, perhaps you possess strong customer service and communication skills because you worked at a call center, or perhaps you worked in a restaurant, so you possess the ability to succeed in a fast-paced environment.

"My senior year of high school, I volunteered at the local hospital ten hours per week. I would operate the switchboard, deliver mail, newspaper, and flowers, assist with wheeling patients back and forth from radiology, and other miscellaneous tasks in the kitchen. I loved working at the hospital and while in my first year of college, I took the CNA training course and obtained my certification. I worked part-time at the same hospital on the cardiac unit while I completed my nursing program. I've always been passionate about helping others and found my true calling while working at the hospital."

"Prior to nursing school, I worked as a waitress and in a retail clothing store. I enjoyed working in both positions as I'm very outgoing and like working with the public and meeting new people. Both of these positions helped me further develop my interpersonal and communication skills as well as build my customer service skills. I truly believe all of these skills will transfer well into my first nursing position."
