Question 2 of 30

What is your typical response when you encounter an academic challenge?

"When I have encountered academic difficulty in the past, I have recognized the issue early and approached my professor for additional information or study resources. With these resources, I will either increase the time spent reviewing the class material or engage another person to increase my understanding of the topic. For instance, during my biophysical chemistry class this year, I fell behind as we approached the subject of molecular interactions. To ensure my success, I hired a Department of Chemistry tutor. This approach was beneficial, and I gained a much clearer understanding of the subject, which helped my grade a great deal. Should I encounter difficulties while attending veterinarian school, I will not hesitate to seek outside assistance."

      How to Answer

Every veterinary medicine student will encounter academic challenges, so it's important to know that you are not alone when you experience difficulties. The Admissions Committee at The University of Missouri wants to know that you will handle academic challenges with emotional intelligence and poise.

Perhaps you reach out to other students when you encounter difficulties in your academic studies. Maybe you have additional conversations with your professors, or perhaps you engage a tutor to help you better understand the material. Discuss your approach to overcoming academic challenges and highlight how this approach has helped you succeed in your educational journey. If possible, give a real-life example of a time when you encountered and overcame an academic challenge.

"Once I notice I am not doing well in a subject, I do not wait until the last few weeks. I recognize the issue early and I would reach out to my peers that are excelling in the subject where I am not. I ask what their methods of studying are and try to apply that to my learning process. Instead of being reactive, I am proactive. Moreover, I would also reach out to my professors and ask for study tactics and specific questions on the topics I do not understand. Moreover, in my study time, I would spend those hours studying topics that are challenging to me. For example, in my chemistry II class, I would ask my friend, who was a biochemistry major and had an A in the class to study together so that I can understand some of her studying habits and she can teach me her methods of learning the material. I was falling behind and she agreed to help me do better in the class. Even though she was doing better in the class than me, I would also teach some things that made both of us better. After studying with her, I saw a huge difference in my grades and we studied regularly while still doing well in the class. I used her tactics, such as creating practice problems, creating flashcards, and studying out loud. I didn't hold her back either, when she taught me materials I didn't understand, teaching me was her way of studying and better prepared."

Good job! I really like that you strive to be proactive rather than reactive. And, sharing a specific example and how that helped you improve in Chemistry II illustrates that your proactive plan, ability to adapt, and willingness to persevere in the face of difficulty have paid off in your academic career.
