Question 2 of 30

Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond for a patient or their family member.

"Recently, I had a patient who had their service dog into the hospital with them as they were dying. There was not enough time to get the patient to hospice, so the charge nurse said we should make the patient as comfortable as possible in his room. The patient had no family or friends that would visit, and we had become friends in the two weeks he was in the ICU. As the patient was dying, he asked if I would look after his dog Charlie when he passed. I told him I would and kept my word. I was not allowed to have pets where I lived and found a house with a backyard so I could keep Charlie."

The interviewer asks this question to see how dedicated you are to your profession, patients, and family members. The interviewer wants to hire a healthcare professional that will go above and beyond to help their patients and their loved ones and not only do the bare minimum. Focus Your Answer On

Focus on describing a situation that shows you went above and beyond your everyday job responsibilities to help a patient or their family members. You may have stayed after your shift ended to comfort a grieving family member or found a way to bring a patient's pet in to visit them. Whatever you describe, make sure it is not something that is breaking hospital rules.
